It seems that under the current system, it's immediately unfair depending on what part of the country you live it. Some places will have several casts headed to the woods...around here it's hard enough to come up with 4 dogs to fill a cast. Sometime 1 or 2 dogs show up for a hunt.

Has anyone on here ever seen a dog that wouldn't hunt unless they saw a feed bucket? I cant believe anyone would find a dog that sorry.

Around here, you can have a full feed bucket but you wont get a coon coming to it when the blueberries are ripe..or later when the beechnuts and acorns are prime.

So anyway, the point to this thread wasn't really are buckets to be used in hunts...just should buckets be used period...why or why not?

Comeing from someone that USED to hunt buckets a LOT. And now I DO NOT. I can tell you this. Do you remember when you was a kid how wonderfull and happy and proud you felt when mom and dad took those training wheels off your bicycle and you done it for real, all by yourself???? Thats the same feeling you feel when you get rid of them buckets and let the dog prove if he can tow the load or not by hisself.

in mho, I've hunted off of feeder buckets in the winter to get a quicker drop time. hide hunting. but stop on any creek with a corn field on the way to the bucket spot and its just as fast or faster.

hunting in competion hunts on feeder buckets.........you dont have hunting coon dogs....working coon dogs.any cur dog half breed can learn about the buckets and go to that spot....ITS JUST NOT REAL HUNTING>>> JMO.

dropping dogs and having them work out a bad or old track .....and turning it into a smokin hot track 300-500 yards away.....and blowin the top off of the tree at the end of it.....Thats a know when to be quite know when to move it coon dog.....If ya dont own one ya dont hunt enough.....its in there blood ....

STOP BEIN LAZY GUYS!!

So if feeders are cheating, what are paid handlers? If competition hunts are all about the DOG'S ability, why is it you can walk into most clubhouses before a hunt and tell who's going to win and what tricks they're going to pull before the first cast is ever announced?

Gezz I just Hope you Don't Hunt with a Light Over 6 Volts in GA. !!!

Now this law should be changed

LEGAL HOURS for hunting are 30 minutes
before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset,
except that alligators, raccoons, opossums,
foxes, coyotes, bobcats and feral hogs may
be hunted at night. However, only battery
powered lights not exceeding 6 volts (12 volts
for alligators) or fuel type lanterns may be
carried by hunters for locating these animals.
Legal hours for migratory bird hunting confor

I guess I'm still not seeing the arguement when people are against feed buckets, although I do in a Nite Hunt I suppose. Still, if I hunt a dog off buckets...most of the time they dont go toward the bucket, I cut em lose on the trail in..and then take a left or right and start hunting. When I take em to a place with ne feed bucket, like a corn field or blueberry bog, they hunt the same.
Training wheels? yeah right. John V is that you? lol

One thing I'd never do is SHOOT a coon off a feeder bucket..Thats what all the WMA's in the state are for..

Posted by micooner on 08-09-2008 01:08 AM:

Here is the deal with the feeders, if you draw out with a guide or guides friend and go there most of the time their dogs will go stright to the feeders to get a track going because they are conditioned that way.,after the first tree every thing is even JMO

I have a small woods i train in , no feeders but managed for bunnies and coon and deer, after about 3 nights with the same dog if he has any brains it will beeline to this small ditch where i can strike a coon ANY night of the year. no matter from which direction i cast from.JMO

Seriously, I dont see anything wrong with it. A bucket doesn't mean you'll tree a coon within 30 feet.
Because some coonhunters are to cheap to put out buckets, so they frown on people that do.

GDawg, it might not be illegal for "you", maybe your kinfolks is the game warden your county. LOL but it's illegal in Georgia to turn a dog loose near a feeder bucket. That's straight outta the Ranger's mouth. I called the DNR in Georgia and asked to speak to a game warden. He told me point blank, it doesn't even matter if you don't have a firearm with you at all, if you cut a dog loose near feed then your hunting illegal. I called and asked.

Dont worry Smokey will LOL!!!!!!!!!! All I know is it says nothing what so ever about it in the regs..If it was wrong. It would be there..They are sure gonna have a hard time doing anything to ya if you dont have a gun..I'm supplemental feeding the deer .

I'm not against the use of buckets and have used plenty in the past. Here's what I think, for what it's worth...

- Buckets are great for starting a pup or a young dog by itself.

- Depending on the type of dog you are hunting they can be good or bad. If you have a dog that "has too much tree" you'll most likely tree more bucket then you do coon because they tree on the first hint of scent.

- They come in real handy if your in an area where your coon population is low and hunting areas are slim. (We all don't live in areas where coonfield run for miles)

I was in a hunt last month that I traveled quite a distance to go to. I withdrew my dog in 25 minutes because the quide was dumping us 15 yards from buckets and it was just a big mess. Dogs were getting hooked on the first tree they came to. I stayed with the cast for the remainder of the hunt and they made 5 trees, all of them were empty.

Personally with the dog that I am currently hunting I prefer to freecast him and have him run a "wild" track and tree it at the end.

Not to brag on my dog but I entered him in 6 NTCH cast and won 5 of them. The 5 hunts that he won no buckets were used. Again, I'd say it depend on the style of dog your hunting whether you agree or disagree with using them. JMO, wd

feeders don't give me one bit of edge. my dogs still can't tree a coon. hunt feeders 6 nites a week.
