-- why walkers? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=217109)

It's easier to find a decent priced walker, whether it be pups, old dogs, started dogs etc, due to the numbers game...Look around just a little bit and almost everyone can find something in the Walker line that suits....My first love has always been a Redbone Coonhound, but they were harder to find and when you did find one for sale that would suit it was very expensively priced...No, for me going Walkers was the easiest way......Supply and demand....

LOOK AROUND. FOR A REAL GOOD WALKER YOU WILL PAY MORE . MOST OF THESE $200 TO $600 WALKER DOGS . YOUR NOT GETTING MUCH.AND IF YOU ARE GETTING ANY THING.

why you ask?

like the first person said it's because there is 10/1 odds yes you are right there is good and bad in all.if each cast had 1 dog from ever breed the odds would be closer. and the wins would be even . but they do tend to start younger then others.i have never owned nothing but blackandtan and never will.but dont beleave that one is any better then the next.

i have nothing against walkers. i just prefer english. that being said...

taken from www.dogbreedinfo.com

"It has been said that the history of the English Coonhound is the history of all coonhounds. With the exception of the Plott Hound, most coonhounds can be traced back to the English Foxhound. In
1905 the English Coonhound was first registered by UKC under the name of English fox & Coonhound. Back then they were used for fox hunting much more than they are today. The name reflected the similarity that the breed had to the American Foxhound and the English foxhound. While the Redbone and Black and Tan were given separate breed status, all other treeing coonhounds were called English after the turn of the century. These included both the Treeing Walker Coonhound and the Bluetick Coonhound. They were considered all the same breed. It was the variation in color which separated them. The heavily ticked dogs split off from the English and the Bluetick Coonhound was recognized as a separate breed in 1945. In 1946 the tricolored hounds separated into the breed called Treeing Walker Coonhounds. Though redticked dogs predominate, to this day there are still tri-colored and blueticked English hounds. The English Coonhound was bred to adapt to the rougher American climate and terrain. An English named "Bones," owned by Colonel Leon Robinson, won one of the first National Coonhound Championships. The breed is still used by practical hunters and competitive hound owners throughout the USA"

If you kind of like listening to a hound work a trail for a while, if you like hearing that dying bawl, If you can't stand a lying coonhound. You may want some other breed.

LOL Can't help but laugh at this one. Fact is I can take all of you out with me tonight and show you coon all night long with my walker but you still would say they are slick treeing idiots lol Oh well coon hunters are a stuborn bunch.

and ThankHeavens the other breed are following the Walker breed with "trying to improve the breed" with there breeding styles/research. Its in this months bloodlines book on certain English Stud Dogs.."trying to improve the breed" Good For Ya'll

let me know how that works out.

I hunt walkers out of Nailor, lipper, Skuna, Harry and there are no slick treein idiots here, that walk and breath and eat.

In the walker breed we dont tolerate it we cull it. We dont hug it we hunt it. And as one fella said "why on earth have an ugly dog to look at all year long" jmo.
I bet in 1905 they would have flipped out n lost there minds with what we have in the walker breed today.

Well grady no doubt they probably did like to listen to the chase but now a days people want to tree a coon and not wait a long time to do it.

If I wanted to listen to a dog track all night I would get a blood hound. LOL

NOW ADAYS PEOPLE LIKE TO LISTEN TO A TREE DAWG!
THEY DONT CARE IF THE COON IS THEIR!

That is the direction comp. has taken. The hunters that hunt for pleasure still like a race before the tree. Personaly I like to do both. Wish the rules in comp. went toward a little more track though.
