-- Why Walkers? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=215673)

Black and Tans, would usually run any trash they came across, and if you found one that could tree a Coon, it would cost you a fortune, and you still have to worry if you see a Deer, in the spot your turning loose, Blueticks were usually mean and backtracked, not to mention Boot and Bawl for ever.
Redbones, well at least here in Texas, they just love Armidillos and not much else, English would trail for miles and miles without even treeing, and to be honest Ive never seen a Plott tree in my life. Im just gonna stick with Walkers.
This one is too easy. Why Walkers? That's what I say to my son when we're on our way home from a hunt................ right after he got spanked by my blues again.

If it needs a Trainer I dont want it, I prefer natural ability.LOL

agree for most part...... breeders have focused on breeding and improving the competition walker, which is not always the best coondog.... yes the great ones shine through, but there a whole lot more culls.... i've hunted everything but redbones, I have found that for competition the walkers are hands down, if u have the money & want to win the big hunt..... if u just want to compete & win ur fair share of the regular hunts, then go with what ever breed u enjoy.... i prefer to hide hunt w/ the bue dogs, although I have seen some dang accurate english dogs as well as black dogs..... Well MikeO, you're right about one thing. I keep score with a rifle and I can't see a walker making it through the kill season alive hunting for me. When my dog trees I rack the slide.
everyone that hunts walkers just likes to go to trees and this time of the year its hard to prove what he is doing. thats why i hunt blues and black and tans because to me they are the most honest dogs and my brother hunts walkers and we may go to 5 trees a night and the only time we see a coon is at my dogs tree.

tell your brother to cull those walkers. cuz mine dont miss. I got a friend who says he sees more coons with his bright light ...WHAT...he hunts bluetick...The only thing I've everseen on my own is a deer running out of the woods and I walk in and there is a possum sitting on a branch lookin at me scared me half to death...I dont need to look in trees when Im following my dog cuz the coons ahead of em...of course I hunted the two I have before I bought em and the other ones ended up buzzard food bought on a mans word...Guess its all about the person what they like... That color ya like...mine everybody thinks is a big beagle...and coon hides on the smokehouse wall.

i always herd that if u find a real good red dog that u have somehing worth more that its weight and gold but i dont like taken a chance i perfer going with what i know will tree me a coon like to hunt in competions hunts but dont never do to good but i know i can go turn out when im needing food and my dog will get one treed thats y i will stick with the treeing walker not downing anyones dog cause there r a bunch of good dogs out there black dogs and all the others but i prefer the walker dogs
ive hunted blue, black, and english they all got good and bad in all of them....different strokes for different folks....i just prefer coon only type dogs ive done my chasing go yonder on whatever type hounds.....i learned i dont have the patience for that nonsense at all.....i only hunt one type of hound regardless of color....just so happens its a white one with spots right now.

The Walker Gyp, I have, Treed her first Coon, by her self the third time I put her in the woods. I didnt teach her a darn thing.
The Walker male I own was started as a Hog Dog, He had been Whipped for Treeing Coons, it didnt phase him a bit.
And these two are just average run of the mill Walkers, Not Champions, just representitives of a great breed.
I have not trained them in any way, just hunted them and fed them.

i would hunt a pink poodle if it would tree me a coon. i havent hunted none of mine in a hunt yet because they arent ready or old enough yet but they can get the job done. just have a few minor things to work on and then grand here i come. something bout i walker i just haven't like or might not of hunted with the right one yet. i was raised with blues and black and tans i guess thats why i love them but i'll hunt anydog that will get the job done right.

HEy I know we all like what we own..duh. but WHY ARE THERE 7 PAGES OF WALKER STUD DOGS IN THE BLOODLINES BOOK? AND THE REPRODUCERS LISTS FOR WALKERS ARE OFF THE CHARTS COMPARED TO OTHER BREEDS?These dogs came from the same stock as others for the most part...maybe except plotts... I dont want to argue Im sure we all keep what makes us Happy....Thats a given no need to argue over the breeds ...Was looking for something about this group of houndsman and that group of houndsman...who really made sure nailor bred ( OR ANYOTHER CHAMP STUD)..these different lines or Heck did the old timers just breed anything that would stand for the ole champions....see what I'm sayin...Think I'm answerin my own question as I read all these responses... and strive to see it from other views on other sites also......dont wanna cause probs.

Was told a story by an old coonhunter that he seen a guy shoot a coon out to two walkers and they never stopped treeing to even go after the coon. treepower!
thats a good question family.....i would guess pretty much anything that would stand was bred to nailor, rat, maybe sackett jr but not near as much as nailor,rat.....why????....because they are so dominant....a guy bred his potlicker that couldnt tree a coon to rat and got a litter of tree dogs...word spread so on and so on....is that a bad thing???...i dont know but thats how it goes.
