all the snakes listed do have the pointed heads and wide at the back (triangle shaped) except the coral snake

when it comes to these snakes just remember red on yellow kill a fellow, red on black friend of jack. this is in reference to the bands of color touching each other. red on yellow is the coral snake and red on black is the king snake I believe.

Drew, I am not doubting you at all, but I have never encountered a corn snake with markings such as these, and never had that arrow-shapped of a head. Most corn snakes that I have encounterd look like this....

Rowdyhound....

Here is what I would do.... Since the snake is already dead, very carefully open the mouth and check to see if it has pits (venom glands and fangs) MAKE SURE TO WEAR THICK GLOVES!!! Even though a snake is dead, it can still emitt venom. If it has pits, then it is a good thing you killed it, but also take it to a local zoo or reptile sanctuary so that they can identify it.

Also, where you found this snake, was it near any water, like a creek or pond?? It looks like it is swollen... sometimes snakes will bask in water to rehydrate themselves, and appear bloated.

I never second guess a type of snake I don't know. If it is unreconizable to me, then it is dead, so tha I can clearly identify it safely.

Corn snakes come in different colors and varieties.........I am from Alabama, so cornsnakes in Texas will have varieties not scene in Alabama or other east coast states.

The snake is dead and from the looks of the pic, it looks like the killing damage came at the head.

If it's not a corn snake, the only other snake it could would be an Eastern Hognose.

Since Rowdy didn't mention a Cobra like head, I didn't mention an Eastern Hognose as a possible ID.

Is the Hognose poisnious? And how big do they get? And yes it was shot in the head. This snake was found up near my house in my back yard. The hounds had it cornered, nothing gets a free pass across the yard with them out, and it was extrememly MAD.

.............no...........and a Hognose is one of the few that just WON'T bite you.....................you pick 'em up, they will play dead like a possum.............they will make like they are gonna bite you, even flair their head open like a cobra...........but will never do it...........ps-a real big one will go 4 feet.......

Yep , I usually just check enough to tell it's a snake and my natual reaction takes care of the rest. By the time I get close enough to look for all those features that tell if there poisnious or not it's kinda hard to tell.

LOL Mr Dale you sound like my husband!!!!!!!!! He don't ask questions till its dead then he'll ask me is it poisnious???? We had my pup and another dog bitten by a copperhead in their kennels last year and those 2 looked awful, since then he don't let snakes live around here.
