Don't believe I will haul them in the trunk.... Although if I get desperate....who knows.LOL! Na do not believe that is an option.

scott. i use barrels for dog houses and they work fine, so if they like to sleep in them then they shouldnt mind riding in them. keep on saving the money .

Barrels..

Our dogs sleep in the barrels too.

The only thing that I was talking about, was would it not be hard for them to stand up in a round barrel going down the road over bumps, and stuff? Well, not everyone has to put their truck in 4X4 to go hunting like we have to sometimes, but I still thought it would be hard to stand up in.

I know whatcha mean about saving a dollar, hubby is only one working in our family.

If you could somehow put a bottom in it? Reckon how? that would be a GOOD summer box if you could put a bottom so it would be flat, and the dogs could stand up.

That's what I meant, I didnt mean to offend you or anything. We got lucky when we got ours, I was still working then, and had more money to throw around than we do now.

I was just trying to use my resources at home without spending a lot of jack.

I just built a box out of plywood to fit the back of my Jeep Wagoneer. I got the plans from this http://rabbithuntingonline.com/maga...g_a_dog_box.htm, but modified them a bit (read made it bigger). It isn't the best looking since I am neither a carpenter or real picky, and it cost me about $80.00 bucks. could have been cheaper, but I was going to make a hinged top to help in cleanup, but I scratched that idea. The way I figure it, those nice diamond plated boxes are for the people, not for the dogs, the dogs don't care what they ride in, as long as it's warm enough in the winter, and cool enough in the summer. Not that I wouldn't like to have one of those nice pretty boxes and a brand new 4 door truck, but I can't afford that right now.

If you use the barrels......

cut the door out of the bottom of the barrel. The bung for the barrels will be in the back of the box and you can unscrew them in the summer to open the holes and then screw them back in the winter to cut down draft. I do this with my dog houses (barrels) and it works great. If I can just remember what I did with those bungs..................hhhmmmmmm

Well, I went by the hard ware store and bought one of those blades you can put on the end of your 3/8's drill.

I bought one that would cut a hole two and a half inches. Put about 20 to 25 holes in each barrel. Spaced them out in rows and then some on the end. I have the flat bar and mesh doors, so plenty of air should get through.

4 Runners are enclosed, so I want to have plenty of air current flowing through the barrels. This winter when it gets cold I will put the plugs back in the holes or will just cover the barrels with an old heavy blanket.

We use barrels on our 4 wheelers. Work great. We put plywood floors in them. We use grates out of outdoor grills for doors. They work really well.

Rowdy's idea of having one of the barrells detachable sounds good.

My plan is to leave them seperate to begin with. They fit snug in between the fender wells of the 4runner. I might cut a 2x4 to fit snug in the front.

Some of you have been polluted with a little of the PETA virus. "Oh that is not good enough." "Ohhhhh this" "Ohhhh that"

As long as its dry and ventilated who cares how you came by the box.

Barrels

I am Lucky enough to work for the power company and I use the old Bucket Liners from Line trucks as dog houses I put a piece of Plywood on the front of them with a Rubber Flap. They will last alot longer than we will LOL you have to change your bedding more often because you do get Moisture in them I drill holes in the bottom of them to let the moisture out and let a little more air in. Scott you might want to try and find some bucket liners they are Rectangle so they will fit better in your truck. and you can usualy get them for free because if there is a small hole or a crack in them they cant use them . ive hauled my dogs in the trunk of a 66 mustang many times. i didnt have to drive far to get to the woods and the dogs could care less what they were rideing in as long as they were going hunting lol. ive used barrels before and they worked out as good as anything ive seen. drill you some vents and throw some straw in it and the dog will be just fine.

I hauled mine in the trunk of a "54 Chysler my aunt gave me. I'd stick a mop handle uner it and tie it down with haystring. LOL Probly let in more fumes that way than if I had a shut it. There never was speackers but it had speacker holes and the dogs learned to stick their heads up through them and join our BS in the car. One night coming back I did a rolling stop at a sign and got pulled. The cop walked up and asked"that tjing got brakes? You could have dragged your foot and stopped it." Then he got deathly serious and pulled his gun. He asked, "Where is everybody? I know there was a car full of yall . I could see a bunch of heads in hyar and windows all steamed up". I was at a loss. I said nobody but me and my buddy, the dogs had done ducked back inside the trunk. We finally got it figured out and all was well. Sure glad he didn't ask for my licsence, I was only 13 but that didn't matter much back then.

you mean them dogs were sticking their head thru the speaker holes? lol thats the funniest thing i ever heard.lol

All this ideals sounds good how about some pictures may see one way on one pic something else on anther combine the 2 for and even better one when I was a boy we hauled our coon dogs in the trunk of the car the next day Mom would go to town the store and buy groceries never killed one of us or a hound lol

Actually, it is better for the hounds if they can't stand up in their box. A small tight made box such as a barrel will go a long way to preventing injuries if in an accident.

This is an issue with animal rights individuals who believe the animals need to stand up with their full height of the animals top of the head.

The real argument isn't about comfort ... it should be about safety.

Just something else to think about.
