-- Garmin Astros in the hunts (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=188275)
I see it this way. Keep the tracker on as long as there are no beeps during the duration of the hunt and as long as the screen is not visible, (maybe Garmin should market a cover that slides over the unit with just a hole for the antenna in case of a summer hunt and you want to wear it on your belt) They can make the check for that idea out to me any time they want. lol jk . Make it a solid point if it beeps your scratched, no ohh i forgot to turn it off. If any dog in the cast is wearing a gps tracker and you pull out any gps with the clock runniing your done (Someone could benifit just as well from knowing where someone elses dog is as there own and it is pretty easy to figure out a collar id). I dont know why you need to look at your gps during hunt time anyway. If your looking for your truck Id say a time out should have already been called. If you are that person who wants to know which way there going but your dog has a gps collar on then you better pack a compass too. Tracker can be used during a time out just like any other as well as to find the truck "during a time out". They just need a zero tolerance policy on it and judges to enforce it. The first person to get caught needs made an example of. As far as the cheating goes, if your gonna worry bout someone cheating you with the gps there going pull 10 other things on you why your watching for that. JMO
Anyone that waits for the Astro to tell them their dog is treed is going to be treeing in for 25 99% of the time in a hunt situation. The dog has to confine its movements to a small area for 60 seconds before it shows them as treed. The tree alert is useless because it gives false alerts alot and only after 1 minute goes by.

I've already heard tell of 1 being scratched for it. Dog was winning cast. Said he was just using the gps part of the system. Anyhow my dog trees it takes a min or so to beep treed. Thats if you can hear them. If you cant hear them.Mine want pick them up anyhow lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
up
It would be real easy to use one and never be seen. Just drag up the cast and when everyone is walking noone would ever know. There have been lots of times I would like to know which way my dog went. A tight mouthed dog that will get in the timber can and will get out of hearing on you. If it is possible for someone to gain an edge by using one cheating or not they are going to do it. Not saying everyone but there are those who will do about anything for one of those yellow slips.
I HAVE HUNTED WITH THE ASTRO 3 NIGHTS AND THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN TREE YOUR DOG OFF ONE. I HAVE BEEN GETTING ABOUT HALF A MILE RANGE AND LOOSING SIGNAL QUITE A BIT. THEY SURE ARE NICE WHEN THEY WORK AND YOU HAVE THE MAPS THOUGH.
Davy did you receive you're card yet . Was wonder how you liked it

Come on people drop you're ego and admitt you just got beat, made a bad call, dog made a mistake, what ever. You can't get cheated that much
I have been useing one for the last 3 nights and figured out this much. If the GPS is in "battery saver" mode, I keep loosing the signal. After I switch to "normal" mode, I never loose a signal. Anyone else notice this?
JiM, I thought you were staying in the dark ages?? I hunt the back side of these reservoirs over here in Kansas. 99.999% on the river. One of these units would be the ticket, but I am going to wait for improvements on the collar.

I was in a nite hunt on Saturday. I carry a normal compass. I left the receiver in the truck and just let the dog go hunting. This thing is not like a regular tracker, it doesn't just give me direction. Once timeout is called to find a dog, this will tell me exactly where he is, or at least how far away he was when it lost signal. I can simply walk back to the truck, grab it, fire it up, and get to walking. The time this unit saves but being able to pinpoint a dog, far out weighs the time I'll use just walking in a direction to find a dog.
I had zero issues in the nite hunt at all.
I also left it in the truck because since I purchased it, I find myself constantly checking it to see what my dog is doing while he is silent. I had to break that habit, lol.
I love it and if used properly, it won't be a problem.

I left it on locked in the truck. It was not on my person, nor anywhere that I could get to it during hunt time.
I have also left it off in the truck, while pleasure hunting. It still seems to pick up the collar after it powers up, unless the dog is out of range.
By what I see in the rules, and having talked it over with the Judge on Saturday night, everything was fine with how I did it.
I did not even get in or out of the truck unless time out had been called. I never even had reason to look at the receiver until I was all done with the hunt and on the way home. But I had piece of mind knowing that I could/would find the dog, if need be.
I left the Receiver on and did it exactly as stated above.

Thats how I plan to use mine in a hunt, havn't been to one since I got mine yet though. I have the same problem as Mr. Beyer I am constantly watching that screen seeing where and what my dog is doing. I have only had mine about a week and it has saved me many miles on my feet already though
does anyone have the new antennas on their collars? I do mine and they work great except sometimes it pulls out of the zip ties and hangs down then I can't hardly get any range. Just wondering if anyone did something different then zip ties? I have them tight but keeps pulling back through the ties.

Zip Ties
Use a piece of bicycle innertube slipped over the collar and antennae, or a piece of heat shrink tubing if you can find it big enough.

How about UKC just makes it legal to use tracking devices during the hunts? I would say that 99% of the people hunting in the hunts use trackers on their dogs while pleasure hunting. So what if everyone knows where there dog is at or at least what direction he is in? I know these GPS trackers may provide new ways to cheat but they may also keep my dog off of a road or out of a grumpy farmers grove. IMO if someone has decided to cheat to win a cast..... they aren't going to need a gps tracker to do it.
To me.... I'd take getting cheated a few times to keep my dog out of harms way while hunting him on ground I have no idea about. I'd like to see the nearest road on my gps and how close my dog is to it. Plus those gps units don't put coons in trees. It still takes a dog that can tree a coon to win.

Been hunting with some folks that are using them. I know they give you some interesting information when used correctly, but these ole boys spend more time looking at the GPS than listening to their dog. It almost makes me wonder if they remember what their dogs sound like. I like the idea of it and will probably own one, but i hope they're never allowed to be used during hunt time. i go hunting to hear the dogs not to play a video game. Ha!
Ya'll dont take that wrong. Ive just been griping to myself about this for awhile and well i dont make it too long before i open my mouth. LOL

I agree totally Russel, I love the sound of a hound doing his thing. It's when that rascal isn't barking that the tracking device would come in handy. I just find it funny that we all use them while pleasure hunting but then can't use them in a night hunt..... why?
