I do not know about several.

I believe that was me. Believe me I hunt hounds, the point I was trying to make is this. If a person has a dog that is not a HOUND and the dog shows the desire and can tree a coon and be consitent, then who really cares??? Do I expect it to go out and win the World Hunt. No! Hump, I would have to agree that a Coon Hound would be the logical choice to hunt coon with. However, I do not think it is the only choice, if someone else has enough patients to train another breed. By the way hounds were not origanally bred to coon hunt with. I really doubt if you see too many people running out to buy a pit bull to coon hunt with.

it was not my choice to purchase a pit for hunting.

he was a pet and i was trying to include him in some activities that i have always admired from afar.

i have put some thought into purchasing a hound but right now i am enjoying the coon scene, with my pit bull.

i agree that he is not the ideal choice but he seems to enjoy it and is truely learning how to use his nose. i am amazed at times and just enjoying the learning process for the both of us.

thanks

To Scott S.
I agree that if a Poodle were used it would not raise any concern, but with the media hype that surronds the APBT and AMSTAFF, it is of great concern when Yendawg says that he promotes the breed but then calls his dog a "killer" and then says that was meant for the media. Why would a so called responsible APBT owner joke about that?

I own an AMSTAFF and I know the kind of peple that cause problems for this breed. It's not the dogs fault that it is a very tenasious prey driven animal, but to exploit it by teaching it to kill worries me. True, I do not know Yendawg or his APBT, I have not and will not pass judgement. I am only voiceing my concerns.

True that the APBT/AMSTAFF are very well rounded dogs and can do almost anything, but if you really want to test these dogs there are many other events/avenues that provide the owner and dog the chance to track and locate without having the dog "kill" another animal.

Just my 2 cents

well yendawg congradulation you now know what it is like to try and hunt a dog in todays world. the same tongue lashing you are taking now is the same tongue lashing we coon hunters take from the animal rights activist. kinda odd how thing work huh?

Posted by yendawg on 06-27-2003 09:10 PM:

lol

i have been bashed for owning pits. i never realized other breeds deal with the same stuff.

i must admit....

i kinda enjoy being bashed. it gets me fired-up and makes me try all that much harder!!!

Posted by Tazhavoc on 06-27-2003 09:13 PM:

I really don't think yendawg is taking a tongue lashing. Just people curious as to his choice of "coondog". I used to coon hunt with my father all the time but have not done so for a very long time. I really enjoyed the time spent in the woods with my father and watching the dogs work. If I had the time I would love to get back into it.

Posted by yendawg on 06-27-2003 09:15 PM:

by the way, "everyone"...

the 'kill the coon' part was my original question. i didn't know if i should do it or not. thats why i asked and thats why i am here.

trying to do the right thing, the right way.......

thanks, no harm done.

i kinda enjoy the people and responses on this board. alot of decent people with educated opinions. i appreciate all of them, even sleepy hollows.

Yendawg I am also I AST and APBT owner. While I can't say that I agree with your using the term "killer" even in poking fun at the media, which is what I believe you were doing. If your dog can be trained to coon hunt, go for it. At least you are attempting to get the information you need to go about doing it properly.

I can understand others reasons for not liking the idea (and even the term "killer") but I don't think we as breed owners should be limited to what events we participate in. Every dog, no matter what breed, whether it is bred for a particular purpose or not, is not going to be suited for every event.

Good luck with your training.

coon fight

well, im by no means an authority, but what i have heard done by hunters who want to put their dog on a live coon is to give the coon a shot in the leg, after it weakens, then turn the dog loose on it. some might not agree with this method, but it makes sense to me. if your dog gets beat up real bad the first time he might never come back for seconds, then after that and the dog is a good ways along, turn him out on a live coon. just my 2 cents. some other ideas they gave me was to keep a rabbit and a goat in a pen close by your dogs. this way your dogs will become acustomed to rabbits and deer(the goat) and wont run trash. not sure if it works, but again it atleast sounds good

If a 20lb coon makes a mature 60lb hound quit ....kill em' both. A hound won't ever be tougher than the first time ...that's his genetics your seeing. If his genetics say quit then cull him. Tells me what kind of hound some people own though. One pit bull killing a coon or three hounds stretching his guts out after being shot in the butt...hope some of those stones don't bouce back yall.

I have a friend that will turn a live coon loose on his 6 mth old pups , he is a firm beleiver that makes the dog and from what I see I beleive it .He has some nice walker dogs.I myself am afraid to do that maybe at 9 mths old , I have some that want the coon in a cage.

Posted by tankeryanker on 06-28-2003 04:19 AM:

Instead of "bashing" each other we need to "bash" those people that want to take away our basic right to own the breed(s) of dog we choose. I get crap all the time for having an Amm Staff and from what I have been reading hunters of all creatures are endanger of loosing their right to hunt.

killer dogs

i own dogs i have walker coonhounds, apbt's ,and great pyreneese . incedentaly the best guard dog i have ever had was a wlker female ,the biggest killer i ever had was a 250 pound great pyreneese ,he would kill and eat anything that got in the yard with the game cocks includeing cats and dogs and the best freind i have ever had was a 26 pound pit bull

Posted by Amanda on 07-02-2003 02:21 AM:

ok ok

ok boys, knowing the "pit bull" breed how many of you would turn your prized coonhounds out in the woods with a pit? Not me! Again, i have no problems with the breed. i have a doberman and get critisized everyday for having a "viscious dog". I live in Ohio, and you are suppose to have muzzles on pits when they are outside of your yard. I have a degree in law enforcement and again i was an animal cruelty officer, i know what i am talking about. i have seen great pits go after their owners

That is my opinion--good luck hunting!!

Posted by Justin Smith on 07-02-2003 03:16 AM:

Plenty of pits are not dog agressive unless the owners work on it .... even fighting pits often have to be teased quite a bit to fight. Pretty much all your pit bull catchdogs used for hogs have to get along with the other dogs and only concentrate on the hog.

Posted by Scott S. on 07-02-2003 03:32 AM:

I have a buddy that owns several dogs. Two are pits and he has a yellow lab. You want to be scared of something you better fear his lab. That dog is definitely the Alpha male. He has kicked the arse of the pit bull more then once. The dogs have to be seperated at all time because of the lab.

yendawg! all dogs must be different. i did what everyone told me not to do. i got my pup ate up with a caged coon. i turned it loose on my pup and he whipped my pup so bad i was trying to help get it off the pup (6 months old). the very next night i took the pup hunting and he treed a coon all along and he had the meat.guess what i shot the coon out on the puppy and i was totally shocked, it was a different story . the pup put it on the coon and the pup never stopped treeing coons. for some reason whatever it may be, it seemed to help mine. he is 14 months old now and only weighs about 55 ponds and loves to fight the old ring tales.

i have a buddy that hunts a cross between a pit bull and redbone. He turned out to be a pretty good coon dog

IF DOG TREES COON SHOOT OUT DEAD, COME ON GUYS DOGS TREE FOR THE FUN AND TO PLEASE. DOES A BEAGLE STOP RUNNING RABBITS BECAUSE HE DOESNT CATCH IT I THINK NOT, IF I HAD A DOG THAT QUIT TREEING BECAUSE IT DIDNT GET THE COON I WOULD QUIT HUNTING AND TAKE UP GOLF, SO DONT GET YOUR DOG ATE UP HE WILL ENJOY A SHOT OUT DEAD COON JUST AS WELL AS A LIVE ONE

Beagles were bred and hunted to chase rabbits to the gun for the hunter. Experienced beagle that has been trained for this and had many rabbits shot in front of him is probably a better dog than one that runs loose and chases til' he gets tired and comes home...right?

We have all seen hounds whose owners don't shoot/shake out the coon but instead just go to the dog and bring him back off the tree. These dogs learn they can get away with blanks and the owner is ok with this . If dog has desire to fight and expects to get his mouth on game then he will try hard to have a live coon when he trees.

Is your Pitbull a Grand nite champion yet???? IF not, you should enter him in the nite hunts. You'll have a good time. Then you can win a few (and you should easily) and then put a $1000 stud fee on him and make lots of money like the rest of em. IF the other dogs dont seem to want to tree very much dont pay it any attention, there probably just beginners or shy or something. Just call your dog when he trees and then when the other dogs leave and stop treeing they all get minused and the only one with plus points at the end is YOU!!!!!!!! If some of them start crying and whining about things not being fair and accusing your dog of being mean dont pay them any attention. THere just jealous and will eventually get sick and tired of it and quit one day. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
