SAVE THE COON, HUNT WITH A HOUND!

Posted by RH. on 10-03-2007 03:38 AM:

A friend from school last year came in one moring and said he went coonhunting with his uncle the night before and I asked him what kind of dogs he had.He told me a German Sheppard. I was kind of surprised that a Sheppard would tree a coon so asked him about it and he replies with "the dog is is suppose to tree the coon? , I thought you just brought the dog to kill the coon" ......So the spotlighters were definately out in full force last year.

Pop 1 coon out in a night hunt and now your a sharp shooter.

Gets barred from UKC, and PKC hands him there world champion title for spite.

Pretty easy to do when your judge cant hear any dog but yours aint it Ray.

Another thing if coonhides bring the kind of money yall's saying here in Mo where I live we're going to lose alot of good hunting spots north of me. It's cropland mostly owned by mennonites and amish. You just watch and see if they'll let us coonhunt when a pelt is a 10 dollar bill to them, no way. Them boys will have every trap known to mankind set and be killing ever coon they can see. It wont be any trouble for em to catch 8+ coon a night til they get em killed out.

Ill have to get me a walker dog cheap just for the thieves. They wont know any better and Ill still have Good english.
I know what your sayin but where my Brother and I hunt most is some thick state land. With a Big stream/ small river (not floatable) running through it. Not place for shiners and to heavy for the weak to attempt.
Yes there are some spots that Ill more than likely be kick people off from but that happens every year whether the hides are $5 or $50. Thats just some folks ignorance.

Curtis,

I hunt state land here as well. It can get pretty harry in spots, and it is all river hunting. Not very many in this area like hunting the rivers. The only problem is there are a lot 220's land sets so a fellow has to watch where he dumps. I lost a young hound last year due to that. I do not mind people trapping, but if they are going to set 220 traps they need to do so in a dog proof box set. I will get off my soap box now.

Posted by C. Beyer on 10-03-2007 02:33 PM:

I understand exactly what you mean had a farmer last year had 220's in buckets around his field. I had never gotten over there and it is land I dont have permission to be on but ended up coming out on it one night .one of those traps could have wrecked coon hunting for me all together. Im not sure how heavily trapped the stateland I hunt is. I havent ever seen any lines or anything

what are the laws for everyones states when it comes to hounds and hunting. in minnesota the law says a coon must be put at bay by dogs in order to be harvested. curious if there is laws like that in other states books. obviously just because its a law doesn't mean its going to stop many people but do other states even have anything like this as a law?

The biggest thing to remember is the fur buyers want large prime pelts. They aren't going to pay well for for small blue pelts. I wait until November 1st. Then anything but the small ones are fair game.

Tardawg and Bob,

What you say is true, but if you live in an area of high density and don't harvest them you are likely to end up with less than if you harvest them. Disease will take a coon population down quicker than anything else.

Spot lighters don't have a chance, have an old dog that barks all the time, get a good big mule, hang a cow bell on him, head down the river about fifty yards off the timber line and you will need a drop point about every mile. You may need a back up light for an all nighter. Guys and gals, I hope prices are around fifty cents a hide.

got

a letter from a fur buyer in the mail today. didn't mention anything about the demand for fur, i'm guessing the market is going to be the same as last year or less....

Hides get too valuable I'll have to go back to hunting the indian grounds in the mississippi bottoms. When hides brought 60 bucks tops I still didn't have any company down there. Ain't been in there in twenty years. Might have to do it for old times sake.
