I think 4th gen is about as close as you'll get it anymore. I have an old female (9yrs) that has him in her 4th and shows him 10 more times in her 6 gen. Rodney Vanhorn has alot of line bred little joe stuff. Doubt that he has much thats closer but he definitly has pedigrees full of him.
Dave's Grit dog has him fairly close along with alot of other nice dogs that you don't see alot of anymore.

One year old Grit pup got a first place last night with 1187 1/2 + and no minus. That makes a first and a third in 2 hunts with 1687 1/2 + and no minus. The guy that has him says he is winning by pushing tracks way out in front and being very accurate.

Has anyone talked to Eugene about this ?
The story I've always heard nobody would know of any littermates to Nell. She was a wild dog nobody could catch and had no idea what she was. And not a clue who the sire was.
Joe was out of this female that had a litter of pups under an abandoned porch, Eugene drove by them every day. He couldn't catch the female but did catch a pup. He went to register him and looked down at the ground and seen a Rock, that became the sires name. He then looked at his wife "Nell" and came up with the dams name. I could be totaly wrong but this is what I have gathered from several old timers on those late nights at Oaks and English Days.
Not to discredit to anyone, just what I've always been told.

You are in the same boat as I am. When you are talking about grade dogs from 50 years ago, All that we have to go by are the stories that the old timers tell.
The story of Neil and her two littermates was told to me by several people I trust. The story had no benefit to them what so ever.
But in the end it is just a story.
This is not in anyway to say that little Joe was anything other than a All Time Great Hound and the start of one of the very finest lines of English hounds the breed has ever known.
"Little Joe was the starting point of the little Joe hounds"
There is nothing here that is different than what Eugene told you. Being that Eugene never caught neil or knew anything about her, dose not mean that someone else may not have known where she came from. Just as if you found a dog tonight with no collar, You would not know the dog or anything about it. But who ever lost the dog would.
The Birdsong/Henry hounds were the starting point for a number of good bloodines in several breeds. Col. Birdsong and Dr. Henry line bred their line of hounds for years. And several people used them as a starting point.

I think there was a story about this in one of the old year books. Do you remember what year that was ?
I think that it was Eugene who told the story about Mr. Hall and little Joe.

I am not Bill Clark, But I got my start in the Light Foot hounds from Bill almost 30 years ago. We are still friends in fact I spoke with Bill today.

You got it. That is the first dog registered as a Light Foot hound.
Ike, The Light Foot.
I have always felt the Light Foot & Little Joe crosses worked so well because it was line breeding on old Neil.
I think this speaks well for the Birdsong/Henry breeding program.

I think Little Joe complimented several diferent crosses. I don't personaly know much along the light foot lines but I've had several Tapp/Little Joe dogs that I thought the world of.
My old female I mentioned does have a few light foot dogs down the line. Rocket-sired Flash-sired Bruno.

little joe

yes joe dogs can move tracks, but don't forget about the dogs he seemed to cross best with -tapp x goose- they could move a bad track to and also tree a lot of layup coons to.dogs like merks singing tapp, jewells tapp and williams blue goose and wilders little goose.these dogs were the foundation for a lot of dogs for the english breed.these dogs helped me along with a lot other people get a start with the english breed.also i would like to thank Ray Jewell for believing in my dogs enough to bring a friend over to female to breed to my ol dog she was a sister to sergents blue i am still hunting this stran of hound today.by the way my ol dog at the time was little joe-tapp-goose bloodlines.this was around late 1980's

Apprarently

there is alot all of us could learn by studying up. Wonder who will tell the truth about this kinda stuff?? Speck at least he didnt have to be lied about. Everyone knew what he was. Lets all start breding the best to the best. Not by message board but by hunting them. Maybe then we will catch up with the walkers. I know you all are gonna jump on me for this one but lets face the facts. The walker men bred the best to the best. The English men its always been about "what line" u hunt. We will always be beat in the big hunts as long as this goes on. Ive found something real intersting about english people lately. They are real concerned with COLOR. Isnt that something.??? Isnt that the thing with English?? Color shouldnt matter. We have more lee way than than any other breed when it comes to color. Butttttt but it holds us back. Until we all got over this "we breed to certain lines" we will always be beat by the walker man. Thats a fact. Lets bring into this thread the best trackin walker dogs and where do we stand as English men? Im English thru and thru but honestly where do we stand?? How long ago has an English dog won the world hunt?? And I dont wanna see this crap of the walkers have more of a chance cuz there is more of em. Thats a fact. We all know this . So it should make it all the sweeter when we do win. But until the best are bred to the best it will never happne and we will keep on goin on lookin like a bunch of buffons. Lets hunt em and lets start breeding the great females in our breed to the great reproducing males. Not by blooodlines but by actual proven reproducing males. Where will this breed go from there?? Color................what a load of crap.

Seems like there were alot of them who were chop on track.

I will tell you one thing about Darroll. He flat out will not tollerate a dog who cant make a bad track fly.

They also have to be bawl on track and have a good locate. He wont tollerate a chop mouth track dog. His females have mouths that alot of male dogs would be proud of.

He is also the man who sold David Minson GRNTCH Cabin Creek Pukin. He raised her from a pup.

I used to hunt with Darrell quite a bit.

I have spent a few nights listening to old Slick, Cobra, Sugar, Bawlie, Speck, and a few others get the job done right.

Gayle.. Dog gone it. Now you just blew away all my theorys about Joe. . LOL. .
What 'is' the story on him Gayle? You've known Eugene awhile.
No... I'm not saying you're old. lol. I wouldn't do that to my buddy.

EnglishDogs. Not to argue bud, I know exactly where you're comming from, but personaly, most of the walker people I know are so stuck on color and lines it's pethetic.
I agree on the Coondog to Coondog theory though. Not every one that calls here gets to breed to Ace. I want higher percentages out of less dogs. Not a million dogs.
A buddy of mine ran an add one time. I forget the numbers exactly but it was funny and kind of said something we should think about before breeding.

Stud Fee :
GrNitCh females Free
Females that can tree a Coon $200
Females that can't tree coon $1000

Thats not exact but it gives you an idea.
