some real good advice above by everybody --

the only thing id argue with is chiggers- and not too hard-

ive done some stupid stuff with a shock collar myself--

think before you push the button-- its best training tool ever invented -

its not a magic wand - lol

Lots of good advice from russell and Oak ridge and several others.
My 2cents worth
1) Not enough work on learning to track
2) To much caged coon
3) Hunting with mean dogs
4) Praiseing a dog for treeing a slick tree
5) Shooting to many coons out on a young dog
There are others but by far like Oak Ridge said a dog that cant run a track is worthless. From a very early age 3 months I start working on my pups to run a sented drag around the yard , teaching it to lead, know its name, handleing the pup everay day gives it the want to please you the master.
If you expect it to make a coondog you have to handle it and get it out of the pen let it mature in the woods and fields not in the pen and expect it to run and tree 1st night out

I made the mistake of shooting one out that the dog didn't tree and hadn't been down because he would tree it if it had been down. It took me a year to get him to quit running around the woods looking up and treeing on every squirrel nest he saw in the woods, especially on a moon lit noght. Haven't made that mistake again.

Lot of good advise here.Some,over and over,which means those are comon accurences.Just to add though,I see a lot of people putting there dogs in comp. hunts that clearly are not ready.They tree a coon in there back yard so they think they are ready to compete.Its not very long until you see that pup for sale.("He just quit treeing")Dont get in a hurry to show what you got,If you do,you wont have nothing.

coondog you hit the nail on the head. it's ok to start a young dog with a old one but they need to be in the woods alone to ever make it, in my opinion.
