Pleasure hunt and show
Started out showing what we hunted, but recently got some real nice hounds to show. Will probably start them in the woods when its cooler. Both "show" dogs hate house cats and will tree em. My female has been shown a caged coon and hated it, so she'll definatly be in the woods come fall.
I do know of at least one hound with torn ears that has won some BIG shows!!!!!! Jessica

oh lordy, here we go again! every once in a while someone just has to bring up the bench vs hunt thing. as long as the sport and the clubs are getting supported why get your hackles up? there are some people who just don't want to competition hunt. but they support the breeds and the clubs by coming to the events and showing. whats wrong with that? this thread isn't about who breeds what and when. it was about what you like to do at the events.
i haven't competion hunted. if that makes me a bad person oh well live with it. i do pleasure hunt and i enjoy it. even tho i did have one peson tell me i shouldn't be in the woods because of my age and the fact i have asthma. and this was a gung ho competition hunter who won awards as a youth hunter in big ukc events. i don't hunt with him and i won't ever hunt with him ever again. i just can't abide cocky little morons. i hunt my dogs to relax and have fun not put up with egotisitcal people.
but back to the subject. everyone has the right to participate in the events to the degree that they feel comfortable. so can we get off this stupid subject now and just leave it alone.

another question...
Goes along with the same subject matter.. It's obvious that bench shows have gotten much, much smaller (as far as the numbers of dogs shown).... And, when you think about it, even the hunts (number of people hunting their dogs) have gotten smaller.. Why do any of you think the numbers are down regarding bench shows and competition hunts? Any replies: it'll help all of us learn from each other's opinion's.. Thanks..

This is my OPINION!!!
Besides the gas prices being the biggest problem.
Our biggest concern is that we dont ban together and help each other out by supporting our local clubs or other people.. We are too concern with winning and teaching our kids that is what to do is WIN. You got kids that start out with a pup that they raise by themselves competing against kids that are hunting and showing their dad/mom's hunting and show dog. Kids get discourage!! Not only kids, but the newcomers in the sport. That are just starting out with pups that they paid for and no one helping them out. Getting shot down by people that are more experience/have years being behind them.. After awhile these newcomers fall out of the sport cuz, of what others do and say..
This is my suggestion:
What people need to do is forget about their swollen heads and upppy up attitude use their experience to help these newcomers in the sport. Quit bashing others for what they want to do.
Instead of talking about someone behind their back about how they handle the dog or how they trained it. Jump in and ask if they need help. Dont make fun of people trying.. It dont matter what age they are. I could go on and on what I think but I think you all get what I am trying to say...
Let's improve on others attitudes and make this sport fun again. Lets show people this is the sport they need to get involve and have their families involve.
I got to say something else.. I am so glad that when I got into this sport, I meant alot of good guys and gals that have helped me out..
Thanks to these following people for everything:
Mark Griswold
Kitty Gilliland
Don Myers
Adam Frary
Butch Davis
Tony Eggleston
Marvin Ball
and anyone else that I might have forgotten.. If it wasnt for these people I think I would of gotten out of this sport.
Huge Thank You
No question the average number of entries per event is down in UKC but the number of events is probably way up. I wonder if UKC has a total number of dogs entered in all the UKC hunts in 2006 and how does it compare to the total number of dogs hunted in, say, 1985. Bet the 2006 numbers are way higher than 1985, or even 1995. And if you could ad up all the dogs hunted in UKC,PKC, AKC, ACHA in 2006, I'm thinking it would probably be more total dogs hunted than at any time in history. But this is just a guess on my part, I might be way off base.

hunt or show, who really cares !! as long as you are having fun !! i hunt & show i will sometimes show a dog that has never been on a bench just to help a local club. i dont think that people that show hurt our sport, i think it is people who run off at the mouth & cause people to not come out & support your local club !! so be glad these people come to your club & spend thier money. i aint never heard nothing so stupid in all my life !!
I am bowing down to Roughcreek,,,,,, Well said, what I am trying to say but you said it in so little words.. Right to the point..
Thank You Roughcreek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
show & hunt
First impression of this thread is, "you will never change some peoples opinions". Now that we have that out of the way lets analyze the situation.
Most times people who have not done one or the other but exress negative opinions have a a fear of some nature. For most of "us" on this board we are comp by nature, otherwise who cares what others think.
My history is 35 plus years of "AKC and CKC" conf, yes thats right "the other registries. All the time I also dabbled with foxhounds and beagles in what you would call pleasure hunting.
Then an opportunity came up to coon hunt and I fell in love. I believe that all facets of the sport are equal. Conf, showing, bench showing, competition hunts. They are all just a means for us to enjoy our dogs and compete at some level. In conf I have owned and showed several top dogs in different breeds, finished numerous titles including Best in shows with oever 1000 competing and now I also enjoy hunting my dogs.
cont'd
cont'd
If a person decides to do one or the other why is that an issue, what about those who do both. I have two show dogs that don't hunt a lick. not bred not started to do it.
I have a hunt dog that I love to death doing what she was bred for, she also does UKC/AKC bench shows and I couldnt be happier.
My exper with show dogs (AKC and Canadian Kennel Club "CKC") is that you can breed the hunt out of them. So if people do both (Dual dogs), isnt that what we are about. Meet the breed std and meet the breed intent
The conf std for the breed is developed not just for the eye, its also for purpose. Besides why not have a good looking hunt dog. You should be able to look at a breed pict drawn in black & white and know what breed it is..can we alaways do that.
I guess my thoughts are (1) each to their own (2) both avenues are important to preserve the breed (3) if confirmation doesnt matter why have different breeds (4) if hunting doesnt matter why call them coonhounds............JMO
i havent entered a dog in a nite hunt in a long while and might not again ,but i still hunt what i show,,when i get the extra money to show,,took 2 walkers and a plott to a event to show some people the dogs last year and got talked into putting them on the bench and none of the dogs had been on a bench before..when the smoke cleared the best of show came down to my plott and one of my walkers, the plott took it..and when the judge said spin them ,i knew it was a tough choice ..the 2 walkers was out of the 13 yr old dog below..
heres a 13 yr old 3/4 house 1/4 finley river show ch. with 3 wins toward gr show ,hasn't been showed in many yrs but could finish to gr.show if i wanted to show him, even at this age,,
he still has one thing on his mind when i turn him loose and that is to find a coon or bobcat whichever he finds first,,hopefully a coon as he wont be called off when he strikes...run him with a lighted collar so far the coyotes have left him alone..
TREE JOE,LOL

can you tell
so what dogs show, what dogs hunt, what dogs do both, can you tell by looking, dont think so ya have to see em do it no matter which venue, the point being we are talking performance no matter what venue............so lets everyone choose what they like, mix and match and better the breed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Milar and Jamie...
I also like what Mr. Hill was doing. He had some of the best looking hounds on the planet and big game dogs out of this world. If I was half the breeder he was, I would be successful.
Shelby is Directly out of Bark and a double Sackett Jr. Bred gyp. Lots of track dogs in the back ground and sure nuff tree dogs. Her parents are complete dogs as are her grandparents and I can keep going back. There is also Old Coma up close and a double shot of Houseblood and a dose of Spring Creek Radar and Old Rock.
There are lots of Dual Grands behind her and several that could be. There are several hall of fame males behind her and some that will be.
She was bred to reproduce as well.
Thanks for the compliments. She goes back to 8 generations that I have bred, raised, and can trace back to a cross I made 26 years ago. She is the same type dog and same good looking dog as the first cross. Hard Going, hard treeing, loud mouth and easy on the eyes. Producing the same it seems.
nice pictures cara brooks.
i'm just glad to see that a lot of people feel as i do. just enjoy your dog whichever way you can and want to.
just in our area i have seen a decline in the number of dogs showing up for events at the local clubs. and this is just since 2004 when we started. whether it is gas prices, just lack of interest or whatever it is a shame. these events can be fun and something that the whole family can enjoy together. when you think about it there aren't a whole lot of sporting events that are alcohol free and this just happens to be one. you can take your kids and enjoy it with them. in this sport you don't even have to go to organized events to enjoy it with your family.
so if a person wants to just hunt or just show or do both they should all be welcomed. we started out just showing. we have done that now for a couple of years and have really enjoyed it. we have now come to the point where we have dogs that we feel can do the competition hunts and so we'll be moving into that. i think a lot of people take this progression. the bench shows are visual and everyone can see what is going on. while the hunts are a total different story.
so we as participates, club members, or just plain dog enthusiasts should welcome any and all newcomers to our sport. make them feel welcome and just allow them to participate where and how they feel comfortable.

i thought about this lastnight ,wish could be very dangerous!! if you total up what somebody that shows to what somebody that hunts at major hunts and it evens out if not more for the show person depending on how many hounds they show. the entry fee for a major event(oak and classics) is 20 dollars if you show 3 dogs you are paying out 60 dollars if you show more than that...well you get the picture. show people pay just as much no matter how you look at it. but your right as long as people help and get "good" people to help you out you can acomplish the pleasure of not only bettering your sport and the pride of not being a snob and possible helping a kid. i can't stand to see people struggle with there hounds and am happy to help anybody if they are willing to listen and learn. so if your always willing to help somebody that means you are doing your part to help the sport and if you are at a local club that means your supporting your club and ukc!! and like some of you other i have had great respectable people help me!!

Well people, at a regular hunt he's what we usually spend:
10$ entree fee. x 2 dogs= 20$
15$ hunt fee x 3 dogs = 45$
Now it changes and what not but Im sorry I still think this is Coonhunting (key word hunting). We spend more on hunting as you can see. Now I like a dual purpose dog but if it's a coondog I dont care what it looks like, that's what I'm saying. I never said nothing about people who pleasure hunt but don't competition hunt good for them but they still got their dogs in the woods. My dad used to go to 2 night hunts a year but he still had coondogs. So don't think for a minute that I was putting those people down, but In my opinion if you should always breed the dogs to a dog who has the other one's faults so you're always improving, so now how are you going to do that if you're just breeding it for looks? Exactly your not helping the breed out at all. That's what I was saying so maybe you people who said we were quick to judge should stop and think about that. I just don't believe in just a show dog never have never will. I don't care how pretty a dog is if it can't hunt it won't stay here. Now don't get me wrong I absolutely love showing my dogs. Now I realise the money still goes to the same place and blah blah. And for whoever said about the older people and what not, not wanting to hunt because of people in competition hunts, I can't believe that here we always wait for each other, thats just commen courtest. We have some older people around here that can't hunt their dogs but they usually go partners with someone so the other person will hunt the dog. I feel thats a great idea. You will never get me convinced that show and goes are alright, and beside why should my dog who hunts but still has good feet, conformation, and scars on her face go against a dog who just was sprayed down in a show gloss and dont have a mark on them because they've never seen a woods? Thats my problem with it.

amanda alexander once said the handler job is to hide the dogs fault the judges job it find them. if you are breeding the faults out then how could you be breeding fault to fault?? just thought i would ask that. and in your oppion show and goes aren't alright and thats fine. i just choose to be one and i still support the local and national clubs! my brother hunts i do and thats just fine with me and everybody else.

We
hunt, show, field trial & water trial our dogs because we love it. We love the fellowship at the clubs, visit friends we only see at these events & it's FUN!
Our goal as a coonhoundspersons is to help our dogs become all they can be. That is also our goal when producing a litter of pups, a dog that can win or compete at all levels. Also to try & get these pups into the hands of people who have the same goals, make your dog the best it can be.

OK I beg to differ with you all.
I have an 11 month old B&T that is a dual purpose dog. He is hunted most of the time 3 nights a week till this fall and then will be hunt as much as possible and he will stand on the bench with the best of them. In fact his father is a Worldshow Champion and also a Nite Champion working on Grand Nite and gets hunted on a regular occasion.
I agree that alot of show dogs never go to the woods but mine do. And this one will do it both ways and do it well.
Until you walk in the woods with a dual dog do not condem what a person says.

I show and hunt both
I have always liked hunting. Nothing better than to get out at night and listen to the dogs run and tree. Wether pleasure hunting or comp hunting!
Also love to show. Its something I can work with my dog when i'm not hunting.
