In our group we use mainly Johnson, Quick and Marshall collars. They all work good but the edge in distance goes for a Marshall. It just depends if the cost/benefit difference is enough. I mainly have Johnsons and have never lost a dog, or should say have never not been able to track one. I also had a dog hit on the highway and beat the collar all up, but it still worked. I put a little epoxy to hold it together and it works fine.

If you're running a big pack of dogs, it would get mighty spendy to outfit them all with Marshalls. If you hunt a couple of dogs and need more oomph in big sections, it would definately be worth it.

In any case if you get a Marshall, DON'T store it in a bag with the other collars. The magnets in those collars will turn the collar on/off and it will go dead. Just a little heads up.

Thanks for the heads up, I would've done just that!

Tracking Box?

I use a Icom R10 for tracking w/the booster. I was wondering if anyone out in the mountain states use it and what they think about it.

I borrowed a buddies cause I was thinking of getting one because of the size. But after using the good old 1000 for so many years I was as flustered as a teenager working on his first bra clips.I couldn't tune it right so the range was all wrong for what I knew my collars were.I'm sure with some practice I woulda been fine(got pretty good with the bra clips).Quite a few guys use 'em here and love 'em,the ICOM that is.The same buddy swears he gets less bounce with the ICOM than he did with his 1000.

I have three of them that I use out here in the Mtns of Idaho.I use one with the yagi one with a non directional and one for my son.I haven't used much of anything else so I can't give you any good comparison info. but I always find my dogs.

Icom R10

Yeah I have never had a problem with mine either, but the guys up here wont give in to em. They still pay $1000 for a wildlife, which I have nothing against, they are great boxes. BUT...why pay $1000 when you can pay $600 and get a box that is easier to carry, tracks just as well, and ALOT cheaper. Just doesn't make sense to me.

i use a scanner all the tiime--
dont get me wrong, i like them -- to me the big advantage is the small size and able to use it on any collar -

i dont think i would compare them to a wildlife 1000 box -that was same age and condition --

sometimes people get a new reciever and compare it to a reciever they have that is 10 or 20 years old -- or maybe 30 lol

that old equipment is still working but it is rarely the same as it was new- lol

my buddy sent one in for repair-- he was haveing trouble locating dogs with it --

he says you know that box is better now than it ever was-

it was 25 years old -- and i would argue that it had gone bad gradually -- so that didnt even notice -

anybody using the quick track rechargeable changeable battery collar ?

what kind of luck have you had with antennas - ?

ive broke two antennas on mine in a year -they didnt break just pulled right out -

first one was warrantied-

- i really like that collar - but i am not too happy with the antenna

ive had lots of johnson collars over the years and some of them the collar strap wore out before anything else did-

years of trouble free use-

one thing i have noticed about johnsons is some have stronger signal than others--occasionaly have got one that is weak-

Posted by pete on 07-12-2007 10:51 AM:

travis -- i use an alinco scanner---

when you are where u are getting a good signal

the speaker cant quite handle a strong "beep" u will get a "click " -- when pointed in the right direction
- with a real clear loud beep on either side of that --

when u get close

turn it down as low as possible -- or watch the meter--

im talking about alinco scanner but i think its very close to icom --

I like Klein collars they are basically the same as Johnson with a little stronger signal and a little bit cheaper.

Johnson makes good collars but I swore them off after bad customer service.

Klein is easy to deal with, cheaper, stronger signal and you get your stuff back to you way faster with a lot better/friendlier service.

I have tracked marshall, johnson, wildlife, and tracker. Marshall has them all in the distance and ease of use. I have switched to all marshall collars with no regrets.

i have ats tracking they are tough and dependable. just a little salty. Just purchased garmin astro, friends have them and they are something else,
