wasn't the hunt in Georgia the year before, it is good to move it around, but kind of central so nobody beside Donnie Stevens has that far to go.

Great. Over 8 hrs. away and it has to go NORTH? I'd rather go out west or east, don't do south they have swamps and creatures in them!
Guess we won't go unless we have a dog box full to take. Not worth it for one hunt I don't think. Would rather go to Oaks. This past year I didn't get to go, hubby went and came home very disappointed. Said he expected more from it.

Don't seem like it's been very spread out at all... mostly Indiana and Ohio.

i think they should hold all the big hunts right here in my holler.....no need to take the casts out 50miles after meeting at the club and drawing casts....just seperate em up, about three hundred yards apart....cut em loose up hill and then meet up with everybody and a few hundred dogs at the tree.....unless the two or three coon in Mingo aint stirring....then we may have to call time out and drive a couple counties over to find the dogs.....lol..j/k .....well that way everybody can just split the points, give out a few hundred trophies....and go home...and brag all the back...haha

hunts

I would much rather drive 10 hours knowing that you are going to tree some coon, than drive 10 hours the other way knowing it is a good chance that you might not tree a coon at all.

Posted by josh on 01-28-2007 06:44 PM:

Indiana, ohio, Missouri, Iowa.....Have coon, and are centerally located enough for most in the county to have a reasonable oppertunity to get to.

But for their sheer numbers, I have it on high authority that the Walkers dont stand a chance this year.....Unless they can find a "slick" handler....and a Walker that dosent slick tree and isnt affraid of beaver ponds, its going to be a dry year for the spotted dogs.

I don't know of a club in iowa that would take on the world hunt right at this time. Considering that after we held the zones for them 3 years in a row and were promised the world hunt after we did it and now here it is sometime later and we still are not even being consider as host state. Not alot of people in iowa that run clubs right now are very happy with the so called higher ups at ukc. But hey congrats to indiana on landed another big hunt if i get though te rqe's and semifinals i'll be there they have good huntin can't hold it against indiana for the decision ukc makes. And ukc can't say we never put a bid in on it because we contacted them every year for the past 5 years. Guess Iowa just isn't good enough anymore to hold a world hunt.

I have to disagree with a couple of you guys. The Southern states do, in fact, have coons. Just not near as many as places like Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri. Around here it helps to have a dog that "hunts". To me, the best coondog is the one that "finds" the coon. Just my opinion.

LOL i love how this post went from rqe's and the world hunt to a politcal campaign. Bottom line just get someone in there thats going to do us good for are country. And someone thats going to dig us out of the whole that we are in......... Weather it be dem or rep or indpendant i don't care as long as he or she is the best pick for the country. I will say this i'm just glad my son and duaghter are not old enough to be in the miltary yet or they would be over fighting G.W. bogus war.

Thought I'd never see the day that I'd agree w/ sheepster.

There's plenty of threads about politics, how about leave it there instead of cluttering up the things decent to read. There's enough to see on the news about that woman and her prostrate problem.

Posted by anscox on 01-30-2007 05:26 AM:

I don't agree with the opinion it is good to have it in Indiana becuase they are thick with coon...

Wouldn't it be better to hold it somewhere where the dog actually has to WORK to find one? I mean, what is the fun in taking every porch dog out there and treeing 10 coon an hour?

And why in the world would the world hunt be in Indiana? I beat 8 out of 10 people who attend this year will be from the north. They're the only ones who can afford the gas to go being so close to them!
What about the hunters out west? Or far south? We're 8 hrs. away and that is bad enough, but that time of year I would much rather drive 8 hrs. in ANY other direction then north!

Not quit sure what Hillary has to do with the World hunt, don't think I've ever seen her in the woods... or at a bench show.

Call me crazy....

But if Im going to load up and drive 10-20 hours to a hunt, Id much rather hunt where the cast can score several coon.....Any dog can get lucky once, Id rather you have to beat me on a couple coon, not just one.

If you are packing a special dog, youll get there....If your not youll sit and gripe about how far and unfair it is. JMHO

Posted by heidimarty on 01-30-2007 03:20 PM:

Personaly. I'd like to see it in a somewhat less coon populated area also. It is a contest of your dogs abilities. Not a race to see who can tree a coon every 20 feet. Lets see who trees the next kitten the fastest.
I have dogs that can do it there. And do it in style.
I also have dogs that can drive a bad track in the worst of conditions and put a coon at the end of it. These are the dogs I'm most proud of. Their abilities are refined to what their,"Supposed" to be.
As far as the centralizing it.. If you go into UKC's records and break dow the population ratios as far as where the most coon hunters live or, the most coonhounds are registered I might say. Indiana will be pretty well center. I know it kind of sucks for us living 10-20 hours away, but in UKC's eyes they see it that their getting it as close to the middle as possible, and, get people in coon at the same time.
Thats my theory anyway.

Trust me, If you've ever hunted very much in places that are not thick with coon then you know full well that it has absoluty nothing to do with "luck". It's about brains and nose. Hunting ability and tracking ability.

Posted by mjsmith on 01-30-2007 03:30 PM:

You arent gonna tree a coon with any porch dog up here. Its a bit tougher than that. And if ya really want to see who's got a coondog lets have the world hunt in Indiana or Michigan in February.

Sheep,

We have a little 'ol thing called Winter up here....Coon dont move much, and conditions are pretty harsh.

A dog usually has to hunt pretty hard to put one on the outside.

Maybe The world hunt should be held in MN in Janruary?

Posted by shaffer on 01-30-2007 04:19 PM:

i live in michigan lets have it right now we have 8 inches of snow on the ground well see who has a coon dog i bet not very many people would show up

Posted by Kenny Eads on 01-30-2007 04:51 PM:

It might be hard to tree coons in hills and swamps in 40-50 degree weather down south but try treeing coons on 2-3 inches of ice and snow and 0-30 degree weather not to mention your dog hunting with cut up feet all the time from the ice oh yeah and did I mention its hard enough on the hunter walking in on solid Ice and back. Each area has it plusses and minuses but coondogs will be fine in any and all terrain. I never knew coondogs had an Idea what state they were in and adjust their hunting to that state.Dirt is dirt, water is water, trees are trees and coondogs will be coondogs. If your packing a dog and he has all the tools you will be just fine.
