You're right, but coonsmen said he'd give it a try for $200 bucks and you can't, you have to have both the unit and receiver. Is that $499 the wholesale price?

Reply From Garmin

I asked Garmin to explain what new technology has been developed that allows this system to pick up a satellite signal in dense cover. Here is the reply:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International!

I am happy to help you with this. One of the main changes we have made is a new frequency that will allow our modified 60CSx to pick up your dogs signal upto 7 miles away depending on terrain. The 60CSx has the famed Sirf III chip which is a high sensitivity reciever that allows for satallite reception even in tree cover. I am supposed to be receiving one of these devices soon to test out for myself. I have a Black and Tan at home that I am dying to test this product on! I have great property with lots and lots of Coons and possibly even a Bobcat! Once I have more information I will be better equipped to answer your question more accuratly."

As mentioned previously it does not appear that Garmin has tested this sytem.

It sounds like they are on the right track, but man its going to be tough to get going IMO. If they don't get a good product out right off the bat, it'll never replace the old trackers. I really hope they can deliver on it, its a really neat concept.

I was at the National Pheasant Fest 2007 for the Pheasants Forever in Des Moies, Iowa this past weekend. Very impressive and I spent some time talking with the folks from Astro/Garmin and going over the GPS system. Yes it only has about 10hours of life for the rechargable battery on the collar and yes it looks like it will rotate around on the dog if not secured to stay on top. The GPS system looks and seems to be very pratical. I also hear that Sportdog is going to be working with them to improve the system in the very near future, and since Sportdog has now bought out Innotek they will be making major changes to that system and I spent some time with them..............of course all regarding coonhounds and what they can do for us

I think after talking with them and the ideas they had for me maybe they will go back and look at our market and see what they can do so the system will fit our needs. I think it will be the future for us coon hunters but it will need some major changes.

The system looks durable and the pointing mode would be the same as the tree mode or tree switch for us coon hunters. If a dog was to go underground it will not tramsmitt but would show you the last known location of the dog but you would not be able to verify if in fact the dog was inside a cave or hole by using the system.

I used it, worked it and held it in my hands and I beleive it may have a future for us coon hunters. But some changes will need to be made for what we use it for. They have my information and if I hear of anything I'll post it for everyone to read. Maybe I'll get one for field testing and we'll know how it holds up.

My thing with them for bird dogs was if I got to use a GPS to locate my pointing dog then they are not doing me any good being that darn far in front of me LOL My bird dogs work with me and in front of me not a mile ahead

Wow, what great info guys, thanks. I live about 30 miles from Des Moines and didn't make it to Pheasant Fest, sounds like I sure missed out. I am with you who say this will benefit hounds more than bird dogs, I don't think I would want a bird dog that travels much too far from sight or hearing distance.

i wasnt going to say nothing just yet. but you know where garmin got the idea? you got it i sent it to them in april of 02. they didnt seem interested then but by the looks of the system except for the anttenna did what i told them to.. i got the proof in my safe where i mailed the same thing to myself that i mailed to them drawing,diagrams. things it should do ect. ect. ect. since then ive been talking with marshall systems. [that we all know are interested in products for coon hunters] and there going to do one when the lighted collar is finished and working corectly. all that are interested in his type of collar should get intouch with them and express your interest they said it would probably be a year or so and they wanted to work out the kinks before they marketed it..they sent me an email about the garmin product about a week before it was even metioned here at the ukc site. and when the discussion got started about it i sent them one back telling the we were talking about ti here. they come to the site just to see what the interest level was

This system looks very similar to what Tracker has had for a few years in the overseas market. The collar system is different and Garmin's system is basically a cellphone GPS where you can even call the dogs collar and hear the dog. At one time, Tracker had info on their site about bringing it to the US, but that was years ago and has since been pulled off their US site.

buckshot . i knew about the pointersoulutions but i dont think that tracker is part of it. i could be wrong about that though. there system dont really work off of the same type of cell phone signal we got in the us is the reason it wont work here. or maybe it was the company that provided the service i called pointer soulutions[ in finland before i sent the stuff to garmin] and they were planning or said they were planning to bring it to the us but as you can see it hasnt got here yet. there idea was a good one like you said you could acctually hear the dogs with the system they had going.

Tracker has their own system. Pointer Solutions has their own system.

I posted the links above to the different systems to the 2 different companies.

Tracker had on their US website a few years ago a Coming Soon page with the GPS system. I spoke with the vice-president of Tracker telemetry division a few years ago about when Tracker had plans for a US launch. He said that they were looking at (then) a street price of around $1800.

Never heard anymore about it and they removed it off their US site.

That calling the dog feature is pretty cool.

I ALSO WILL HAVE ONE OF THESE UNITS SOON.
I CALLED GARMIN AND ASKED ABOUT THIS UNIT AND ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I ASKED WAS THE WARRANTY.IT COMES WITH A 1 YEAR WARRANTY,EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE SCREEN DAMAGE (CRACKED).
MY CONCERNS WERE HEAVY COVER.I ASKED WHAT THE RETURN POLICY WAS,AND DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU PURCHASE THE UNIT AT (RETAIL STORE).I ASKED IF I BOUGHT THIS UNIT AND DIDNT LIKE IT AFTER I USED IT, COULD I TAKE IT BACK.YES JUST CHECK WITH THE (RETAIL STORE)AND SEE HOW MANY DAYS YOU HAVE TO RETURN THE UNIT.BASS PRO HERE I COME.
