BilliJo, I just asked Dave what it was called, he said he 'thought' it was National (something or another). Was a long time ago. Anyway, it was 48-54% Protein and 26% fat. You were only supposed to feed 1 CUP a day, and the hounds pooped very little, like rabbit turds. It looked like rabbit pellets.
When that happened to Chief,(Quick Stop bred) him laying steaming in the snow, it scared me to death! The vet we were using at the time said that the high protein over heated his kidneys. So, we switched to Joy at that time, I didn't like the way the hounds looked or acted on that, so went to Diamond. They've been doing real well on it.
Our hounds go to the Vet (Doud's in Oberlin now) every six months for check-ups and shots when needed. Smoke and Rowdy get there yearly prostate exam, Dancer he mammary exam. Can never be too careful. He reccomends no higher protein that 21% in winter and 18% in summer. But, as always, that's his opinion. I'm sure by morning, I'll be wrong about that too.

Sportmix is not a bad feed at all.....The harder a dog is hunted the higher protien and fat they will need... a 24-20 0r 26-18 is what the (average dog) will need..If they cant keep weight on a 30-20 should be feed on the real hard hunted dogs..But all dogs are different some look good on Walmark feed and others will look real bad ...I did l feed Sportmix,Diamond,Blackgold, kasko,Joy for years and sold them..I tryed Ultra Advantage 24-20 thats ALL I feed now..All my dogs look great on it.Pups to the old dogs.I also feed less than any other feed...That makes it even cheaper in the long run..Ive always feed 26-18 year round for 40 +years...Its never hurt any of my dogs. They live on average 14-15 years old..........

I feed 26/18 Sportmix to my Treeing Walker male, and my redbone female. They both are in great shape and stay that way. Black Gold wasn't avaiable in my area, so i searched and found this to be the best alternative. I might add, it produces just as well, and is cheaper. Good for the dogs, great for the pocket book.

I'll check around for you ...How much does he want for the pup
national dog food
yes you are correct that was a pelleted dog food. it was hard to get dogs to eat that stuff.
I carried a line of dog food over the years. When talking to the nutrtionist his thoughts were:
Females before and after getting preg. really need the higher proteins and as well as pups of course.
His next thing he convinced me was to carry or push a 22-18 for older dogs. I still continue to think that these good ones
24-20, 22-18 are great for dogs. I hesitate at these 27-14 and so although do think 26-18 are good for you really pushed dogs and up here north. espeically yote hunting in the winter.
But I knew guys that would hunt bear all summer and the 22-18 was more than enuf. The winters took more of a toll on them in terms of going to a 26-18 etc....
Just my thoughts.
It sure was hard to get them to eat it. I just talked to another couple that say they don't feed much over 21% for this same reason. I guess it's what you prefer.

High Protein
Hey Guys! Just found out about the site!
First of all I'd like to say thanks for all the SPORTMiX support!
Before that though, let me introduce myself.
My name is Kent. I am the Alabama Rep for SPORTMiX. SPORTMiX is produced by Midwestern Pet Foods, Evansville, IN.
If any of you guys ever need anything please feel free to call us. I am part of a close-knit South Eastern Team that covers Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri. Also some of the Florida Pan-Handle.

.............................................................
Just wanted to give a brief word to the "Protein on the Kidneys" discussion.
redneck_girl is right.
The key to this discussion is this: If we are not *Working* our dogs we don't need them on the high protein numbers. We recommend that you move the dog back to a "maintenance" product like our Green Bag 21/12. Especially in the Summer Heat.
This way, with SPORTMiX at least, you are still giving the dog a quality feed that still has two (2) meats in the top four (4) ingredients. There is no need to go all the way down to a Corn Based product here like a 21/8.
Our human system is a lot like a dogs in this regard. Our kidneys will "burn-up" too if we are not exercising sufficiently but are taking in high doses of Protein. Not to mention if you are generating that Protein number with a high quality and highly digestible source of Protein like Meat. Corn usually blows through tooooo fast anyway. Of course you can get real ridiculous with the numbers. If you are doing that you are going to damage your dog no matter how hard you work him. Over 30% you are basically putting Moth Balls in the Gas Tank. You WILL go fast for a little while! But it is just a matter of time before something goes "BooM"!!!
From what we are seeing, the Coon and Squirrel guys are using the Blue Bag, 26/18, with a HIGH level of success! These dogs while competing don't need the higher fat. They need energy and lots of it. You guys know better than I do that all that counts is all-out focus and endurance for two (2) hours. The more digestible the the Protein form the better. That is why we use Meat instead of Corn. We see our recipe as a *tool*. The quality of any job is directly related to the quality of the tools used to perform that job. Hopefully we are making your jobs easier and your *products* better!
On the other side of the street, the Bird and Duck guys love the Black Bag, 24/20. These guys dont run "all-out". They spend some time sitting in the blind as well as taking alot of cold dips. This is where a little extra fat comes in handy! We also have gone after the quality of the coat with the Omegas. 3 & 6. Our sources are Minhadin Fish Oil and Flax Seed. The highest forms available. Sounds like some of ya'll have seen the way the dogs coats slick out on it. If you haven't, you got to try it!
Well, I ramble some....haha.
Give us a call and watch for us at the next couple of "Dog of the Year" hunts with the ATAF series! look for us in Full Cry as well!
Thanks everybody!!!

Thats what you get for hunting potliquers.
Good Feed,Sorry hounds

quote:Thanks BlueBagRules!! Here I started thinking I was loosing my mind (would have been a short trip). The food we were feeding wasn't SportMix, but was high in protein. We were led to beleive it was good for them by the dealer. Now, granted it didn't have adverse affects on the other hounds, but it did Chief.

Trying Sport Mix
My FIRST CHOICE IS STILL PURINA, but Purina doesn't deliver to my feedstore anymore & I just can't handle the Wal Mart scramble of getting the big bags into the cart & then standing in line forever, then getting it out of the cart into my truck & also trying to redeem the rebate checks, etc.
SO
I switched to Diamond, which worked for a few months until a few weeks ago - it started running like soup thru several of my dogs.
SO
the feedstore owner suggested 24/20 Sportmix. The dogs like it, & portions fed are smaller & stools are normal.
I must say though - when I move to an area where I can buy Purina at a feedstore, I WILL feed Purina again as I fed it for more than 15 years with great results.
I always use Purina O.N.E. Lamb & Rice for new puppies, regardless.
