I told the gentleman it was my own presonal opinion that if they have to be recognized by the AKC then I would rather they remain a "mangey mutt" for all time!!

I agree.

I think they will remain "inferior breed" or whatever else it says about them untill the name of the dog changes and we remove the word Cur. I think we ought to keep calling them curs and let others think what they want about the name.
It would be nice if they were recognized for what they are, but it doesn't matter too much to me.

I love the word Cur for the dogs and wish it was still attached to the Catahoula (the only cur breed that does not carry "cur" in it's breed name) I personally don't like "Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog" and would much rather the name was still "Catahoula Cur".

I agree. (I also don't like that it's the only Cur breed that's not in the Scenthound Group).

I know you and I have talked about this before. I'm not fond of the "Leopard" in the name since that predisposes people to not liking the solid colored dogs and "Louisiana" seems redundant since "Catahoula" already places them in Louisiana... and leaving it as just "Catahoula Dog" just doesn't seem right.

And every hunter with dogs I know who hears "Catahoula Leopard" just lets it slide. However, if they hear "Catahoula Cur" I get "Those Cur dogs are TOUGH." I think that's a testament to how high Curs are really thought of in hunting circles--not as mangy mutts, but as a type all of their own.
