I GET ON THIS BOARD ALOT AND DO ALOT OF READING AND JUST ABOUT EVERY POST SOMEONE HAS TO GET ON A POST AND GIVE THERE NEGATIVE OPINION ABOUT WHAT EVER THE TOPIC MAY BE ABOUT.
I THOUGHT THAT WE WERE ALL ARE IN THIS SPORT BECAUSE WE ENJOY GETTING OUT WATCHING OUR DOGS WORK AND SOMETIMES ENJOY SPENDING SOME GOOD TIMES WITH FRIENDS.
THEN WHY CANT WE JUST GET ON HERE AND TALK LIKE A BUNCH OF GROWN MEN THAT ALL SUPPORT COONHUNTING AND NOT TRY TO RUN SOMEONE DOWN. WE HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE THAT DONT LIKE YOUR DOGS OUT AT NIGHT MAKING ALOT OF NOISE BUT KNOW WE ARE GOING TO THE LOWNESS OF GETTING ON A BOARD TO PROMOTE COONHUNTING AND RUN EACH OTER IN THE GROUND. INSTEAD OF GETTING ON THE BOARD AND PUTTING EACH OTHER DOWN WHY DONT IF YOU HAVE A NEGATIVE RESPONSE JUST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF ITS NOT LIKE THEY MAKE YOU RESPOND TO USE THE BOARD.
AS FOR JOHN WICK IM READING THE SECOND BOOK NOW AND I LIKE IT. I REALLY LIKE IT BECAUSE IT DEALS WITH A SPORT I ENJOY BEING A PART OF. AND ANYONE DOING SOMETHING TO PROMOTE OUR SPORT AND OUR DOGS WE SHOULD ALL BE IN SUPPORT FOR NOT AGAINST

I've never read one but intend to order them.I'd like to see what he has to say and see if any of it has applied to me or my dogs over the years.Like said above.Iove to coon hunt and anything that has something to do with the sport I'll check it out.Plus I hear some of his books go for big money. If I dont like em.I'll just hang onto them for 20 or 30 years and sell em for big bucks. It would be nice if I would just get my COONER already.I'm calling them tomorrow.I know it aint coming because I done have the prohound and cooner always beats them here!!!!!!!

I do like what John Wick sells and has done for coonhunting. The only thing I would like to know. He starts a list of guidelines as to what breeding stock and stud dogs should measure up to before breeding but says his list goes on and on. I would like to know what he wants to see in a dog before he will breed or stud it, I know he said for a dog to be studded it's desire to hunt will be so strong you can cut the male loose next to a female that's ready to be bread with no hesitation. I would like to see the rest of his list. I have a male rolling in natural ability but he does have that one fault.

My 2 cents, He was at the youth nationals a couple years ago, and he had a question and answer session. He was asked several questions, and never really answered any of them. He was asked specific questions about problems with dogs, and he just rambled some and never really said anything. I don't like or dislike him, I am just telling you what I saw. I think he is way more into getting what he can get out of all of us ($) than he is about trying to help anyone. that's ok, God bless him for being able to make a living off of something he likes. Just don't make him out to be more than he is.

There is no doubt that Wick has put his hands on some good dogs throughout the years. He also hunted very hard at one time before he had a back injury. I am not taking anything from him but there are some things he has preached about that he has been all wrong on. For example, he said that one of the greatest reproducing females, stylish queen, should have been culled because she didn't meet breed standards. Then he turns around in one of his books and talks about his line of dogs with dew claws and glass eyes. He has also tried to lay claim for starting the Stylish strain of walkers. It doesn't look good for him.
He does no more blowing and carries no more of a holier than thou attitude than Tim Ball. If Mr. Ball took all of those long winded articles for all of the years he's been writing them and compiled them he could have a book or two himself.

Walk With Wick

When I bought my first coondog, I had no idea what to do with her and what to expect out of her. (My x-husbands idea to get her). Someone passed along Wick's book to me and it gave me an idea of what I needed to be doing and what was instore for the future. We are not all born with this hunting spoon in our mouths, and different ideas and tactics are also helpful at times. We all need assistance one time or another.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS. BOY'S WE ALL NEED TO STICK TOGETHER ON THESE OLE DOGS AND PROTECT OUR RIGHT TO HUNT. I KNOW WE ALL LIKE DIFFERENT BREEDS OF DOGS AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF DOGS BUT, RIVERBEND IS RIGHT THROWING MUD IN EACH OTHERS FACE'S IS HURTING ALL OF US!!! LET'S ALL WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP OUR SPORT ALIVE, AND LET'S GIVE CREDIT AND APPLAUDE THOSE WHO ARE DOING WELL NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF DOG THEY HUNT OR WHAT COLOR THEY ARE!!! AS FAR AS THE BOOK I HAVE VOL.I AND VOLII, AND NO I DON'T AGREE WITH EVERYTHING IN IT, BUT I DO LIKE TO READ IT.!! AND TO THOSE YOUNG HUNTERS OUT THERE IT'S A GOOD REFERENCE FOR MEDICAL ISSUES, BREEDING, NOT JUST TRAINING!! GOOD LUCK AND GOOD HUNTING TO "EVERYONE" OUT THERE !!!!

John Wicke's book.

John is originally from PA. I've met him. I knew his younger brother, Jim, a lot better (Jim hunted Redbones back then).

It's been probably a little over 30 years since John moved to MO. He's been in the game a long time, and has acquired a lot of knowledge of coonhunting and coonhounds.

Rest assured, there are a lot of other people that have been in this game 30, 40, 50+ years that may be just as knowledgeable and have just as good of a hound eye as John. But, they don't have books!!! John does.

For the hunter that hasn't been in the game very long, John's books may be a great guide. After all, where do you start if you don't know where to start? A good starting point would be to learn what you can from those that have been there before you!

What's the book price? About $30? If an inexperienced hunter can learn one or two things that can help them, the book should be well worth the price.

Looking back at some of my posts on this, it sure sounds like I dont care much for Wick. I realy dont have anything agianst him. I would take his word for gold on any hunting equipment I needed.

I just had others who I could ask any questions when I was younger, so I never needed his book. If some other kid starting out didnt have that, I can see where the book could help.

Like I said before, he earned my respect when he called Feilder out on the tracking system. Alot of others would have just stocked up on it and sold the piss out of them.

The man knows a coondog and a reproducer, heck he had enough since to buy Banjo from Mac.

Posted by John Wick on 10-09-2006 08:51 PM:

Hello folks. I’ve been hearing that I’m a topic of discussion the past week so I asked my secretary to print it for me to read. Usually I don’t do that but I figure I can always learn something so I read this one. My arthritic fingers can’t type and I don’t know how to operate a computer so I’m very seldom aware of what’s going on here.

Since I’m the subject of an extensive discussion, I’d like to respond. I’ll talk into this tape recorder and Lisa, my secretary, will type it up for you folks to read if you’d like to. Thank you for the opportunity.

1. The last thing on earth I want is to be divisive or a wedge issue in this wonderful sport. Why can’t we all be cheering for each other? We all have a valuable place in this sport. We all have good ideas to offer. We all have knowledge that someone else could use. PLEASE let’s be positive and upbeat and helpful and cheerful and congratulatory to each other. A small difference in point of view should never divide us from the 95 percent of things we have in common. I dislike our political parties fussing and feuding and trying to divide us. And I HATE to see coon hunters trying to do the same thing to the sport we enjoy.

2. Thanks to those of you who spoke up for me in one way or another. I deeply appreciate it.

3. It’s plain to me and most of you that some folks have “issues” that many of us don’t understand. Volume II of Walk With Wick has an entire chapter titled “The Human Side of Our Sport.” It addresses, in the best way I can, what I’ve seen and learned and how it affects you and I every day in life and in this sport. I’ve finally come to understand that humans are more complicated than dogs and some of the reasons why. There’s not room to talk about all that here, but for those who are interested, that chapter will help you understand.

4. RedtickhunterDG made the important point that many people only know what happened the last year or two or five. I can tell you for sure that I know hundreds of people who had great accomplishments and helped our sport immensely, but much of it may have been 20 or 30 or 50 or 70 years ago. Long-term achievements don’t happen for anyone in a couple of years.

5. Laura Roeder mentioned that she ignores anyone who’s in the magazines all the time, but then she goes on to say how much she likes Vickie Lamb. Who’s in the magazines more than Vickie?

I think everyone should be judged as an individual and assumed to be A-okay in every way until they prove to be something other than that. I try to view everyone with respect, but I also have a three strikes and you’re out rule, if it’s needed. Speaking of Vickie, I think she’s great. I read all her articles, and I will read all her books. She is a dog gal for sure, and she does the very best she can to share her knowledge. We should all celebrate the fact that she’s part of our sport.

6. I often hear and read where someone recommends my books and other writings and then says they’re good for people just starting out. But I’d like to point out that the strongest endorsements I get are from people who say they’ve hunted ten or twenty years but were having much poorer results than they thought they should. More than any other group, they are the ones who tell me my books are helpful, not only to understand dogs, but to understand all aspects of our sport.

7. Nightowl24 said a bunch of very true and correct things. He also completely understands and explained why I occasionally have to remind people of a few things I’ve done. Believe me, no one has a tougher time with doing that than me, but it’s a must in marketing. Many years ago Seth Gault, then owner and editor of Full Cry magazine, explained to me that each year there’s a 30 percent turnover in subscribers. That means that each year one-third of the people reading anything are new to the subject. In order to sell books or any product in this sport, you’ve just got to continually establish a little history and credibility. Anyone who knows me at all knows that’s hard for me, but I understand I gotta do it. If you’ve read much of my writing, you know that I also try hard to use it to show that if I can do it, YOU can do it if you want to. I don’t think very many of you started out more humbly and with less knowledge or help in this sport than I did. By the way Nightowl24, you mentioned that I seemed sour in that two-page ad when I talked about how I wish I could get a royalty for my ideas. Well actually, I was saying that with a smile in my voice and a grin on my face. I just had a chat with my secretary this morning stating that we need to use smiley faces more often to make my thoughts more clear. I’m a pathetic comedian and am kind of serious so when I try to say anything joking or jovial, it’s often assumed to be serious. From here on when I’m grinnin’ in my writings, you’ll see a smiley face. Thank you for that lesson.

8. Larry Poe, I appreciate your strong support and standing up for me, but I do need to correct one thing. The time you referred to the bogus tracking system coming on the market, I did spend about $3,000 trying to expose it for what it was. As usual, my efforts were met with mixed reactions. And I can see why. People that don’t know or understand me would naturally look for a motive that wasn’t pure. That thing was called Quadro Tracker, and it was as bogus as a three dollar bill. Thousands of hunters got swindled. Steve Fielder and a few other influential people did jump on the bandwagon for it though, and I’ll never understand how that happened. BUT Steve Fielder is a good guy, and I did not call him out on it. I challenged the makers and advertisers of that product. Of course, they did not take me up on it. A few years later, those people who made and promoted this product ended up going to the federal penitentiary for several federal fraud charges. Boy did they deserve it!

Like most of us, Steve Fielder does the best he can for this sport every day. I would guess that Steve now feels he made a mistake in this particular situation, but Mr. Fielder has done thousands of good things for this sport, and he deserves a ton of credit for trying to do good things all day, every day for years. I’m not perfect. He’s not perfect. Possibly you folks reading this aren’t perfect. But Steve is a HUGE asset to our sport, and we should be thankful he’s on our team.

9. English power has a common theme and question that he or she often repeats. And the point is valid. Yes, I have bought several dogs that I believed could greatly help my breeding program. Truly top producing dogs don’t grow on trees. One male can produce many, many litters in his lifetime; females much fewer. I’ve tended to stick with my female side but have occasionally brought in a male I thought would be helpful to me and maybe some other folks too. But I have spent most of my life starting and then selling pups that I raised. I was trying to make a living with my dogs, and I never made much money keeping dogs. The only way I could make truck payments and house payments and buy groceries was to sell dogs and that usually meant selling the best I raised.

10. Coomer obviously has problems with me. I don’t have a clue what they are but he sure has a right to his opinion. In this case, we may just be two different types of folks that won’t ever be buddies, but I’d be happy to sit down with him and visit any time. I bet we have many things in common that we could agree on.

Posted by John Wick on 10-09-2006 08:53 PM:

11. I like what Jimmy Legrand said about honoring and remembering the man who helped him get started and be successful. That’s very nice, and I hope your mentor is still alive or that you expressed your feelings to him while he was still with us if he’s gone.

We all need to remember, though, that thousands of people each year try to get started in our tree dog sport, but they don’t have anyone to help them, coach them, and steady them. Many of them quit in disappointment and frustration within a year. I started out the same tough way but was too hard-headed to quit. That’s why I try to do the writing projects I do. They are helpful to those folks along with many others who want to open their minds to different points of view. Our sport needs all the help we can get. Shouldn’t we all do all we can to help and encourage newcomers and those who have been with us for awhile but are still struggling?

12. John Bart, come and visit anytime. We’ll sit down for a day or two and discuss the breeding stock subject. It’s long and has no easy answers and not many provable theories. The one item you brought up is something I have noticed that seems to go along with many of the better reproducers. It’s not something I came up with; it’s something I gradually came to understand might be a factor. There are many other factors. Like all of them, the subject you mentioned is not 100 percent. It’s just one of many possibilities.

13. Dave Hyer, I hope we got to shake hands at the youth hunt you saw me at. You know, I agree with you 100 percent. At those question and answer forums that I sometimes attend, I don’t do a good enough job. I couldn’t agree with you more. I always go home kicking myself and wondering if that’s something I should do or not. They usually tell me I’ve got 15 minutes. Or I’ve got 20 minutes. Or we’re going to give you 30 minutes. Serious and sincere folks often ask me a question that would really take half a day to fully discuss. At the very minimum, would require an hour or two. But yet I’m expected to answer several questions in the time allotted so usually I don’t do a very good job with it. Maybe one of these days we’ll get some deals set up where I can have more time to tackle subjects. I hope so.

I’ve attended several different youth events, and they’re my absolute FAVORITE things to go to. Do you know it’s the youth who have seen me at several of these events who started calling me Uncle John? I didn’t come up with that. Heck, I wouldn’t have thought of that in a million years. But young folks are pretty tuned in, and they recognized where my heart was. They realize I care about them and are trying to help them. They didn’t get that out of my half-hour chats in front of the crowd. They learned that by visiting with me throughout the day and night for the one, two, or three days that I’m at these events. Many of them also picked up that feeling by reading several things I wrote. If folks want to call me “Uncle John,” I’ll take it and wear it proudly. I hear it every day but maybe I shouldn’t use it.

14. Mutt, when I started reading your post, I wanted to give you a high five. But then you said that I said Stylish Queen should have been culled because she didn’t meet breed standards. Where O where did you come up with that? I sure as heck never said that. Producing Stylish Queen is one of my best achievements. I was proud of her when she was born; proud when I sold her; proud all her life and continue to be. You’re welcome to call me at 573-564-6146 or 573-564-3028. You or anyone are welcome to call me BETWEEN NOON AND DARK when you want to talk about anything. I’m happy to visit with folks. Either somewhere you heard wrong info or possibly read something I wrote that didn’t do a very good job explaining. But believe me, I sure never said anything negative about Stylish Queen. If I said something that might have seemed negative, it was just that I did a poor job explaining myself which I often do. Give me a call and let’s chat about it or anything else you care to visit about.

15. Joe Brooks, thanks for the compliment on my writing ability. I’m still trying to learn, but as I get more knowledge and practice, I do hope to write a little better as time goes on. I agree with you that Sid Stewart’s book was good. I read it years ago and have met the man and got to shake his hand. We should all read everything we can get our hands on because most successful people in any sport or business learned much of what they know and use by reading from every possible source.

That’s it for now folks. You won’t see me on here very often but anyone is welcome to call me if you care to visit. Thanks again to all who responded to this post that someone started. Several of you taught me some things and hopefully I’ve cleared up a few matters too. The number one point still stands out in my mind. PLEASE DON’T USE ME TO DIVIDE US UP. Let’s all row this boat together. Let’s all help those who need a helping hand. Every one of you can do something to be helpful. I’m doing what I can.

First I would like to say this post you made, has my respect more than anything else you have ever written, I have heard of you, or you have ever done. Alot of people would have came on here with an axe to grind. I commend you on your indulgence on others opinion, even when it was about you.

As for the tracker and Feilder, my memory isnt as good as it should be. I remember your add on it, and Feilders article in his "product review". I truly always thought your add was a challange to him. I apolligise to both of you if I was wrong.

Regardless, I have always trusted your opinion on equipment because of it, and have never trusted him sence.

BTW, I drew a young ( 1 year old) ntch dog this year, who was the bar none the best young dog I have ever seen. His name was Rude Awakening and he was Banjo bred. I believe a direct son.

Wow John Wick on the board. That is something special.
I own the first edition of Walk with Wick. I bought it because I didn't know a darn thing about coon hounds or coon hunting . I'd been out a few times when I was in my teens. But that was it.
The booked helped me tremendously. I also learned somethings on my own and with the help of others.
I just recently bought Tom Solbergs book " Dog Talk". This book also helped me. Along with time spent with Tom at T-Top kennels.
Isn't it the thirst of knowledge thats helps us all improve on what ever we love to do?
For me. I'm real thirsty all the time..
