Martin, John, Shane

this picture was taken in western Va a few counties above where your cabin is located. The people where riding their horses 4 miles from any roads and they came up on this coyote hanging in a tree. They said there were no bullet wounds no marks around its neck. They are thinking it chased something up that tree and got caught.

Posted by rmcmillan on 01-08-2015 05:36 PM:

GOOD PIC.

I WAS TALKING TO A GUY THAT DOSE NOT COON HUNT THE OTHER DAY. WE GOT TO TALKING ABOUT PORCCUIPINES WHICH ARE REALLY GETTING SET HER. I SAID TO SHOOT EM ALL DUE TO THEM MESSING UP DOGS. HE SAID HE LIKES THEM DUE TO YOTES GRABBING THEM AND THEN DYING.

Joe, neat picture. If only all of them would at least try to kill themselves we'd all be better off...
Mac, My sister lives north of you in Pa., Blair Co. They are overrun with porcupines. Pa. kept the season closed on them for a long time because they breed so slow, they were afraid that too many of them would get killed and they wouldn't recover. It takes them like 18 months to produce one baby. Pa. Game Comm. finally had to open up a season because of the damage they do.
Porcupines will kill every pine tree around. They climb about 2/3rds up to the top and ring the tree just like a beaver and the tree dies. A few years ago they came through my land in Va. and wiped out just about every pine tree in the woods. They also gnaw on the rubber coated flexible brake lines on vehicles, causing people to loose their brakes. Porcupines are crazy about salt, they will risk anything to get at it. Road salt collects under cars and trucks and they get under there and chew on anything not metal.

Posted by Jvogat on 01-08-2015 09:17 PM:

well at lease the yotes

have something else that will kill them.

Martin why do the Porcupines climb up in the pines and do that ?

Posted by msinc on 01-08-2015 10:56 PM:

They actually strip the bark to get to the cambium layer and eat it. It will look just like a beaver climbed way up a tree and ringed it. They mostly do this in the late winter or very early spring when there is just nothing else for them. Late March and early April is the worst time for wild animals...food has yet started to sprout or get out of hibernation. Porcupines feed mostly on pine trees and needles when they first start to grow and the cones in the early fall, same as squirrels.
I doubt even coyotes kill very many porkers. At least they don't in Pa. I really don't think there is much out there that can prey on porcupines...lots of predators try once, but they get over it. Well, maybe. I would say probably several pups a year get killed by trying so they might be worth the trade.
I went back to the spot where I found the dog the other night. I cant say for certain but it looks a lot like the tree fell real recently. I was back there a few days before that night and I don't remember it being down...it is a huge one. I don't know, as scared as the little dog was it could have been either. I am still betting on coyotes though...don't make sense that the female wasn't with him. They hunt good together, but he kind of got real deep real quick without her and without making a bark.

Martin

sorry I didn't respond sooner, ya those Porcupines are a pain when I was in Pa I had dog get quilled up and it was a pain getting them out. hope they never make it down here.

If a tree that big would have fell while you were in the wood you would have heard it. It was most probably coyotes that came after that male, those yotes are slick.

Posted by msinc on 01-12-2015 03:28 PM:

I don't know if we'd have heard it fall or not...we were 625 yards away at the time....It's a mystery but at least it doesn't seem to have bother the little dog much. I had all the dogs out for a trek in the woods yesterday. All seemed O.K.

Posted by Jvogat on 01-15-2015 08:57 PM:

ya

That's some distance. That's good he seems ok. Coons are in full rut now.

Posted by msinc on 01-28-2015 01:12 PM:

Joe,
Waiting for this weather to break so the coons will start moving again...she still hasn't come in heat yet. I am sure it will be around Feb 7th when we have our next hunt. If not she is going in the next one.

Posted by Jvogat on 01-28-2015 03:00 PM:

Martin

sounds good I've been seeing coons cross the road even with this weather. Next hunt for sure.

Joe, you need to go ahead and finish him to grand...I know it don't make the pups any better but like steeb said, there are so many others out there and guys with a good female want that title to help sell the pups. Shouldn't be what people look at but they do.
I might find out soon what this pup is running. She has opened three times during the day on the same brush pile/blowdown. I didn't let her run it neither time, what ever it is. She knows it's wrong...all I gotta do is yell to her and she comes right to me. I put a game camera on the pile of logs looking right where she got in there and barked. I had the male dog try to tree in the same pile about a week before. Watch it be something stupid like a rabbit!!! She's got three more days to not come in heat and she is going in the hunt.
