Finley River Zig

Hi,

With a heavy heart, I buried Zig under his favorite shade tree. He lost a battle with congestive heart failure. Zig and I spent many a cold night in the woods together. I cant replace Zig. He was a special hound.

Sorry to here about your loss of Ziggy I know he was a special hound not many of those good Finley River dogs bred like Zig left. Hope you were able to get some pups off him recently

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts. Hard to accept he is not in his box, patiently waiting for his feed. Miss that huge bawl after dark," ready to go hunting?"

When you opened the box, that massive head went straight to the air. I miss him walking right by my side. Nosing my hand, asking, " can I go hunting now?"

Miss going to his tree listening to his huge tree mouth. Seeing coon after coon. Ziggy didn't miss.

I miss my friend. He was my coonhunting partner.

Iron Man and Tana Nov 10

Hi,

Roger Rowan called Saturday and wanted to go hunting.
I didn't really feel like going, but Roger needed to get Tana out. She had not been hunted. Iron Man and Tana are littermates out of Ziggy and Ramblin Jane, a daughter of Rambler. Jane is a littermate to Whiner, who sold for $8500 at 8 years old. She is also a littermate to Tess, owned by Rick Mick. Tess won the Kansas State Hunt 2 or 3 years ago.

We watched TV until about MN. Loaded Ramblin Lou (another daughter of Rambler), Iron Man, and Tana. Took Lou because I had not hunted her last year at all. Wanted to see if she could still run those tracks like a freight train. Moon up bright and frost on the ground.

Went to a 500 acre corn field with standing corn about 0030 and turned loose. We had an exceptional crop year and grain storage is almost nonexistent. Iron Man struck over to the right. Lou struck in deep, straight ahead, and Tana went with Iron Man.

Lou's track went in a drain tile at the irrigation lake. She gave that good locate and all got silent. Iron Man, in the meantime, had treed and we headed towards the tree. He had a big, viny oak, but I could not find a coon. Tana was there working around the area, not barking, just using her nose.

Pulled Iron Man off the tree and headed in the direction of the lake. Lou met us about a couple hundred yards or so down the field road. Turned them loose again. Lou struck in about 200 yards or so from us. Iron Man opened and the race was on. They treed about 400 yards ahead of us. Walked to the tree listening for Tana, but never heard her or saw her. Got to the tree in a fence row. It was a huge leafy pin oak with Iron Man and Lou blowing the top out. Squalled and squalled, but couldn't get the coon to look. Pulled them off and sent them on.

Lou and Iron Man struck about 300 yards in and ran a track straight for the irrigation lake. They treed and we walked to them. Sitting in a small maple, by a small pond off to the right of the lake, was a coon. The coon was low, so Iron Man was screaming at the tree with no chops. Tana came into that tree, smelled up the tree and began to tree. She has a loud chop and we listened to tree music for awhile.

My question about Lou was answered. She can still fly. She is a littermate to PKC Silver Ch. Gr. Nt. Ch. Osage River Boomer, that Tom Wilbers owned. She is also a littermate of Snitch, that Greg Minkler owned. Snitch is well known in PKC circles. Snitch has won several hunts. Lou's only claim to fame is that of coondog. Doubt that statement? Bring the best you have. We will turn yours loose after midnight, when the easy coons are up, and see what your dog can do. Then we will turn Lou loose in the same woods or go to a different spot and turn her loose.

We petted the dogs. Gave the oreo treatment and headed for the truck. It was about 0130 when we got there. Loaded up and talked for awhile and then headed home to a warm bed and slumber.

Ramblin Paige Nov 20

Hi,

Got up after mn. Ate supper and looked outside to do the weather check. Frost covered the ground. Well, which dog to take?
I think I will take Paige. Paige is a full, but younger sister to my old Lill female that passed away a few years back.

Loaded up Paige and headed for a branch that runs between about 1500 acres of corn. We left about 230am with frost on the ground thick. Turned Paige loose about 3am. Fooled me this year. They had planted soy beans on one side. Up the branch she went in a dead run. I waited, but no strike. I waited and finally a strike behind me deep. I walked across the blacktop to hear better with the wind in my face. I don't use trackers. My dogs have good mouths and I can hear them. Paige was driving that track up another adjoining branch. She gave that high tenor locate and then that never ending machine gun chop. When I had walked to her, she had her little feet on the the trunk looking straight up telling the world she had Mr. Coon.

That was a huge pin oak with leaves still on thick. I looked and looked, couldn't find a thing. I squalled numerous times, still couldn't find a coon. Finally, I saw a tail hanging straight down the trunk, high in the tree. That's all I could see. That coon was well hidden, but I zeroed in on him and popped him out. As he fell, he got bigger and bigger. When he hit the bank on the frozen creek he was as big as Paige. She finished him off. I set down beside her for awhile and just let her chew on that coon. It had probably been 2 years since she had ahold of one ,lol. I petted her and told her she was a good dog. Picked up that heavy coon and we started back to the truck. It was a good mile back. I stopped a few times, set down and petted Paige and thought about Lill. Lill was a jet on track and an awesome, accurate tree dog. Paige is like her sister. That Rambler blood, is coon hound blood. They can fly on tracks. Hot or cold. No doubt about it.

Made it to the truck and headed home to that warm bed that was waiting for me, to drift off to sleep and dream of hunts long ago. Gonna let little Sugar Boy chew on that coon in the morning and listen to him booger bark. Watch his hair stand up and get a good laugh.

Ramblin Lou Nov 23

Hi,

Jim Stacey and I went hunting with Lou and his young male bluetick, Zip. We went to Amish country about 11pm and turned loose up a branch. Lou struck and Zip put in. She drove that track into a doze pile and gave that good locate. End of story. She was back to us in about 5 minutes. Zip came in and we loaded up to go to another part of the branch.

We turned loose there and the dogs struck together and drove this track to a group of leafy pin oaks and slammed the tree. We looked and squalled, but no coon looked. We walked them on about 100 feet off the tree. I wanted to see if they had treed too quick. No bark. They went up the branch about 400 yards and Lou opened. She was having a terrible time on this track. I thought she had lost her nose. She finally sat down and half heartedly treed. I wasn't in a hurry to go to her. I didn't think she had a coon. We walked through the biggest piled up branch of tree tops and multifloral rose 10 foot high to get to her. The tree was in the middle of a big piled up mess of tree tops and rose. She was probably 20 yards off the pile. No coon there. I snapped a leash on and we walked back to the truck. Stopping to back up and go around several times. What a mess.

From there we went to a creek and turned loose. Lou went in and struck. Zip struck 100 yards or so away to the left. Lou drove her track in there about 300 yards and treed like she normally does. Zip took his track in deeper and treed. I went to Lou's tree and Jim went to Zip's. Lou had her coon in a huge white oak. Coon was in the very top of the tree, sitting in a clump of leaves. Jim yelled. I couldn't make out what he said, but soon the the .22 was making noise. I waited a minute and snapped Lou and walked that way. Zip was working that coon over. We gathered up Zip, the rifle, and the coon and headed out to the cornfield to walk back to the truck.

We headed to another creek and turned the duo loose again. Lou struck about 100 yards in and Zip struck. The race was on. They had run that track in about another 200-300 yards, sat down and treed solid. As we got closer, we could tell they were once again on separate trees. When we got there, Zip was about 20 yards or so from Lou. They both had coons. I petted ole Lou and told her what a good dog she was, while Jim shot a coon out to Zip. I eased Lou towards the truck, while Jim collected Zip and the coon.

We walked back out to the truck. It was about 4am. We headed for Jim's house and to unload Zip and I headed home with Lou in her nice warm box.

Nov 28 Ramblin Lou

Hi,

Went hunting with Bob Larkin and his young male out of Triple Threat and Wipeout blood on the bottom. We left Bob's house about 10 pm. and headed for Molino. There is about an 1100 acre piece of land we can hunt. It is rough land with cedars, bluffs, corn fields and lakes. Upon arriving, we got dressed out, while cutting the dogs loose. Lou struck in deep and his young dog struck over to the right. The race was on. Lou located and treed with the young dog close behind her. We walked in about 3/4 mile or so and looked at the coon in the very top of the tree. I kept Lou tied while Bob shot the coon out.

We gathered up Bob's dog, coon, rifle and Lou and walked to the top of the ridge into a cornfield. We cut them loose. Lou went in about 400 yards or so and struck. The young dog struck over to the left and the races were on. Lou was driving that track like a race horse. The young dog left his track and came to Lou just before she locked up. The dogs were treeing hard so we started to walk in. When we got to the lake we had to decide which way to go as they were treed behind the lake. We walked about a mile around the lake and back to them. They were treed in the biggest burr oak tree I've ever seen in Audrain county. The coons were curled up on top of the limbs in that tree. You could only see ears and an occasional eye. I tied Lou up while Bob shot just one coon down to his dog. I petted Lou and told her what a good dog she was. Bob skinned that coon. No packing him out. Too heavy. A good 38-40 incher. We collected rifle and dogs and walked up to the ridge with a corn field that meandered back to the truck about 1 mile and a half. Loaded the young dog and Lou, while talking dogs and coon hunts. Headed back to Mexico, while talking of old mutual hunters we knew and their dogs... and the old Loutre Valley Coon Club. I was just a lad back then. I remember Bob Bransetter and Frank Landfarther.

Thanks Art. Zig always put a good treedog head on his pups. Lill is no exception. She is out of my old Lill female that died. Lill was out of Rambler and Hardwood Jill. She has a mouth very few females ever have.

Sugar Boy

Hi,

I bred Ramblin' Emma to Teddy last summer and she had 2 pups out of the old dog. Those were the last pups out of Teddy. I bred Jewell to him also, later last summer, but she didn't have pups.

Teddy was a grandson of Dual Gr. Ch. Finley River Zoom just like Zig was. My intention was to breed a female out of Teddy to Zig. Zig died and those plans went by the wayside.

I will breed my dogs Finley River and Rambler from now on. That puts Gr. Ch. Finley River Trap on both sides of the pedigree. I will linebreed off of Zoom thru Zig and Teddy offspring I have here. I have 4 direct daughters and 3 granddaughters of Rambler to keep that side going.

I have always tried to put a pup on the ground that was good looking,with a big mouth, and had yard dog smarts. Sugar Boy is the latest model.
