Great hunt.

Rhett and I went to Gumswamp last night. It sure started off bad, with me loading up the Ranger, turning out my dogs to load in the truck, only to realize that I didn’t have my dog box in the truck. Thank goodness I have a good handle on them. Rhett met me at Port Vincent feed store. He started loading his stuff in my truck, and realized that his Garmin handheld had been left on and was flat dead. That’s ok, I can track Case on mine. He goes to get Case out his truck and ole Case aint there. He forgot to load him. Man this is going to be a rough night. Well we get Case and head to the woods. On the way there, Blueduck struck in the box when we were riding down Gumswamp Road, but there’s too much traffic to turn out. He struck again when we went through the gate at CC35, but again we were still right at the road. When we got ½ mile down CC35 he struck again. This time we cut them out, and the race was on. They ran that coon red hot in the cutover for about 30 minutes, then treed on a creek that runs through the cut over. He was treed up a huge Red Oak, but didn’t take long to find him. We made our way back to CC35 and cut them on the same creek but on the opposite side of the road. Case and Janey struck before I could even get Blueduck out the box. Blueduck hit the ground screaming, and the race was on. After about 15-20 mins, the coon made an out, and Blueduck picked it up and started heading west at a high rate of speed. He was close to 100 yards ahead of the other two before then knew what happened. Case cut across to catch up with Blueduck, but Janey kept trying to figure it out. They crossed the road 30 yards from us and kept putting distance between them and Janey. They must have been 300 yards to the east when Janey hit the road. At this point, I told Rhett, “He better Climb, or he is going to get caught. We caught Janey, then headed around to get closer. They were still pouring the coals to him when we made it there. We sat and listened to this race until I started to wonder if they would ever tree him. Around and around in some of the worst stuff Gumswamp has to offer. The track broke down for a second, then we heard Blueduck locate, then Case covered him. The race was over. They had treed on a hollow Sweet Gum, but the coon was on the outside, sitting in the very top. The race lasted a 1-1 ½ hour.
A hunt that started so badly turned out to be a Great hunt!!!!

Made a short hunt last night, and was really proud of my little female Janey. I turned her out twice, and she put a tree on the end of both. She is extremely loud, and will actually hurt your ears, when you get close to her under the tree. Dropped Blueduck once, and he had a great race that covered a lot of ground. When he treed he was a little over 700 yards. I love the sound of a hound on a cold still night. Seem like you could hear them for ever.

Blueduck Pups

Here the first picture of my puppy off of Blueduck. Sure hope he makes a Coondog. With deer season over, I'm hitting the woods hard again. The coons have been rutting, which makes for some really good races. Friday night Donald and I when to gum swamp. we made 4 trees and looked 3. Casey, Donald's CaseXClara female did and outstanding job on the first tree. She got struck at about 50 yards then took the track deep before treeing on a big Pine. It was hard to find him, but we managed to locate him about 3/4 of the way up. Next we turned Blueduck out off the powerline. He when in about 250, barked a few times then fell tree on a big Pin Oak. This tree was 40 yards from where Casey had treed the night before. Found him pretty quick on a limb close to the trunk. Next we sent Janey, (Casey's Litter mate) in east of Wall Bayou. She eventually tree, but that one was slick. Well we had already had a good hunt so we called it a night. On the way back to the truck, Blueduck struck out of the Ranger. Lets run him!!! We cut Blueduck and Janey out, and the race was on. Hour and half later they trees on a big Red Oak. Donald found him in the very top. Man you got to love them Rutting coon!

Rhett and I took Blueduck and Case to the Winter Classic. I had a dog, to deliver, that needed a ride to Kansas, and a Dog Box to deliver to Gary Uchtman. Seem like I was always in a rush, and never really got to visit much. Rhett drew Marianna Ar, and I got sent down south to Winona, Ms. I got stuck first thing as soon as I pulled into the Satellite Club House. A couple fellows pushed me out in the pouring down rain. The rain stopped just as we were leaving for the woods. I had a good hunt, with Blueduck scoring 400 + with no -, but just got beat by a nice young English male. We timed the rain perfectly, as it started raining again on our way back to the Club House. After congratulating the cast winner and thanking the guide, I headed back to Batesville. I arrived back in Batesville around 1:30am. Rhett was nowhere in sight, so I figured I catch me a nap waiting on him. At 4:30am, I was starting to get worried, because of all the rain we been having. I’m guessing it was after 5:00am when Rhett pulled in with the UKC rep. The guy Rhett rode with never returned to the Marianna club house, so he was left to catch a ride with the UKC rep. Come to find out, the guy he rode with over there got stuck in the woods. I’m not sure how this happened, but the guide for that cast, left him, and he didn’t get his truck out till after 9:00am Saturday. Rhett had a dead cast, and the rain kept coming. We delivered the dog for it’s ride to Kansas, and the dog box to Gary. Gary had a pup going to a young man in Baton Rouge, so we loader her up and headed south. I know its sounds like a rough trip, but we enjoyed ourselves. Just wish we would have had more time to relax.

I named the puppy in the picture posted on Jan 30th, Bourr’e. For all you folks that don’t, Bourr’e , pronounced Boo-ray is a card game played down here in the south. I’m really liking him. When you put him on the ground, he’s off exploring and hunting. He is getting close to 4 months old, and man is he ever bull headed. I started leash breaking him, and man oh man he fights that thing. Lol You would think I was killing him. I pull him in and give him slack, and he all happy and playing, but when that leash gets tight again, the rodeo is on. I don’t think I ever had one fight it like this. If he ever gets trashy, I don’t know if I will be able to break him. Lol

Very good weekend for Gray's Creek Kennels

Friday night, Rhett and I took Blueduck and Kasey (Donald's Case X Clara female) to Watson's UKC hunt. Both got Bench Show Wins, and Blueduck won his second Nite Ch win towards grand. We had a 3 dog cast, and got on one of them Gumswamp long winded rutting coon, right off the bat, and the race was on. Blueduck and a 8 year old Walker ran the fire out of the coon. That old coon made 3 road crossing, and treed only about 15 yards off the road after that last crossing. Didn't take but a second to find him sitting up there. After scoring this coon, we had 30 minutes left to hunt. Man what a race, it was beautiful.

Saturday Night was a Slam event. Kasey won the bench show again. Friday was the first time she has ever placed a foot on a bench, what a beautiful little female. Well tonight Rhett and I drew out together, with another Walker dog. I got it all planned in my head, if I can beat this Walker, I got another easy win for Blueduck. But that was not the case. We turned out on another red hot coon, (100 Blueduck, 75 Kasey, and 50 for the Walker) and we were off to the races again. The Walker pulled up treed 15 yards off the road(Circle 125), with Blueduck and Kasey burning up that track in a cutover. The coon made a big loop then hit the woodline. Kasey gave a big bawl locate, then rolled it over to a chop, and Blueduck backed her (125 Kasey, 75 Blueduck Plus them up). Second turn out, Blueduck got struck stright in from us, then Kasey out to our right, then the Walker out in front with Blueduck (100 Blueduck, 75 Kasey, 50 Walker). Walker dog trees, and with 10 sec. left in the 5, Blueduck backs him. When we get to the tree, Blueduck is gone, and no coon found. (125 circle Walker, 75- Blueduck)
Just as shine time ends, Blueduck trees. (125+Blueduck)
With 1 Minute 30 Seconds, remaining in hunt time, Kasey trees (125+ Kasey). And there's your winner.

Blueduck is my young male off of my son, Rhett’s duel grand dog, Gayle’s Grays Creek Case. Case is out of Rodger’s Blue Gus. We breed Case to a NiteCh female that was owned by Claude Smith. Blueduck is the results of this first cross on Case. He will be 3 this spring. I’m very proud of him, and just a pleasure to hunt. He has a good nose and knows how to use it. Opens on track very good. Can take a cold track and work it up till its treed. Good bawl mouth on track, with a loud raspy bawl locate, and short bawl/chop on tree. When he trees, he has a coon, and is there till you get to him. Again, he’s my dog, and I might be alittle partial toward him. Maybe just a little LOL

The little female in the lower picture is Kasey, owned by Donald Bergeron. Kasey is the results of the second breeding of Case to Clara, a female off of Uchtman’s Clearfork Blue Thorn. She will be 2 this spring, and is making one unbelievable coonhound. When she trees, she got a coon. If you cant find him, you can rest assure it’s there. She has something that is hard to explain. It’s like she knows where the coon is before you cut her. I know it sounds crazy, but its true.

Oh yea, you may know Bill Bird, I saw where he posted on your thread. He has a male pup, he calls Troy, that is off of Case’s 3rd cross, which was to Donald’s other female out of Uchtman’s Blue Jobe. Troy must be a year old now.

Took Blueduck for a round last night. Gumswamp has been flooded almost all winter, and with the rain we got the last few days and whats to come, I may not be able to get into the hard woods for a while. So I'm left hunting the cutovers, and pine thickets, but they hold alot of coons. I sent him south into the pine off CC35. Didn't take long for him to strick. After Blueduck got up and running, he took him out deep to my right. At about 450, the coon turned back and headed stright back to me. When he got 45 yards from the road he turned left and headed back south. At 265 yards he treed. I found Blueduck treed on a small Tallow tree that when up between two Pines. It's was plane to see that there was no coon in the Tallow. But stright above the Tallow, in one of the Pines, there sat the coon. Now I'm not talking about scoring this tree with "plus, circle, or minus". But I don't think the coon went up this Tallow tree, and the Pine was only 3-4 yards from it. Why didn't Blueduck tree on the pine? Was this the coon he was running? The track didn't brake down, he was running him hard and fell treed. I guess there will always be questions that can't be answered.

Yesterday, when I got home from work I rushed on over to Gumswamp, to get a short hunting in before it got too late. I turned Blueduck out at 6:30, and he started covering ground. Took him 45 minutes to strike, and he was .6 miles as a crow flys. The track was cold and he was working hard to move it. By the time he had moved it out of the pines and into the hard woods, it was heating up. There is a dead end road, that ends in the middle of these hard woods, with a house and trailer on the very end of it. And Blueduck is headed straight for it. When he was 150 yards from the end of the road, I could tell the coon wasn’t going to turn like it always does. Instead of turning, he headed up the left fork in the creek to the back yard of these houses. I took off to get there as fast as I could drive the ranger. All I could think about is someone coming out that house and shooting my dog. When I got to the end of the dead end, he was treed 65 yards from me, with the house between us. I called him off the tree, which took more time than I would have liked, then got out of there. Needless to say , we called it a night.

Tommy, looks like yaw been having a Lot of Fun and doing some Winning. Congrats to All of Yaw on the Wins. Tell Donald if he ever decides to sell Kasey that I would sure like to Buy Her. Sounds like my kind of Hound. Or, if you make that cross again, put me down for a Female Pup. I'm still searching for that Female with the Extra Special Stuff. My Rose will make a Coon Hound but not sure she's going to have that Extra I'm looking for. So, until I find it, I'm going to keep trying and looking. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Saturday night I sent Blueduck, north, up a ditch that runs between two cutovers. He struck a hot track about 50 yards in and started pushing it hard. After he went about 150 yards, he turned back come back to the road. When he was about 50 yards from the road, the coon popped out and crossed headed south. As Blueduck got closer, he started turning off to my left, then headed back north. The coon that crossed, must have been the sow, and Blueduck must be on the boar. He took him back north a couple 100 yards, then headed back toward me and crossed the road headed south. He ran that coon around and around, never getting any more than 500 yards south of the road. At one point I texted Donald to let him know he was missing a great race, and that the coon was about to cross again, but it never did. 10-15 minutes later he treed about 10-15 yards off the Onion Road, in a huge Pin Oak, to put an end a 50 minute race. This was the same tree he treed in two weeks ago in that UKC hunt.

I had one of those test where they stick all those needles in you and shock you to see how your nerves react, NOT FUN at all. I guess I'll have to get something done to my back here in the near future. It's just about to get where I can't take it anymore.

Last night was the first night I been to the woods since the time has changed. Earler in the day I got a call from a fellow named Chad Breaud, which I had met 25 years ago, but I didn't remember him at all. Chad's getting back in hunting and has a beautiful 3yo male. So we made plan to meet at dark on Gumswamp. We had a good hunt, making two trees and looking at both coon. First tree was about 200 yard walk, but when we made it there I told Chad, I think they missed this one. But the tree had a big hole where the top had broke out and another hole about 7 feet off the ground. If you looked up through the bottom hole, you should beable to see out the top, but you could not, because about half way up was a big ole coon curled up blocking the hole. Sure whis I had taken a picture of that. The next tree was as close, 600 yards to tell the turth. Well when we finally made it to the tree, they were treed up a small Tupelo Gum, surrounded by big Cyprus. Again, I told Chad, I think they missed this one, but there he was sitting in the very top of this small tree. I also brought my pup, Pedro. I didn't turn him out, I just took him for the ride to getting him use to this new life he is fixing to start.

Bayou Coonhunters healed our annual BBOA zone 6 sectional this past Saturday night. Donald showed up with his young female Casey (Case X Clara). He had made arrangements with Rhett to handler her in the hunt and bench show. Bench show dead line was getting close, so I took over the handler’s job. For a young dog that has never been worked with on the bench, she does just great. All you got to do is set her feet and she stands like a statue. Rhett showed up after the show and took over from there. Casey won BBOA Queen of Show, and Queen of Hunt.

I hunted Blueduck in the Nite Champion cast, and won King of Hunt, he was hitting on all cylinders. He got alone with a coon on the first drop, and DEEEEEP and along on the second, with a coon. (+425) Liked to walked me to death, back and forth between his two trees and the other dogs trees.
