Hi,

Sounds like he is progressing nicely. Hard to find a coon in the big oaks. Had trouble finding them last night myself. Can't get back far enough to see the tops. They lay on top of leaf clumps and you can not see them unless they look.

Hi,

Going to the big river bottoms tonight. Get out of the hills until some more leaves fall. The coons are really working over the acorn crop this year, but we will hunt the crawdad eaters tonight. Saw only kittens last night and left them set.

Hi,

Went down on the island ( Missouri River) to hunt the other night. Used to hunt there years ago. Hard place to get to. Had great races. Coons are thick and like to run. The Cottonwoods were so tall, that even with a 21 volt light, the tops were hard to shine to find the coons.

Saturday and Sunday were miserable cold. I hunted the old dog both nights. There wasn't alot moving. Monday it was warmer and a little snow storm on the way. The coon were running over top of each other. I hunted Jake. He made 5 trees. One was a den, 3 coon seen, and one not sure about. He also ran another track where he marked several trees but couldn't work it out.
I'm also sure that he ran a deer for a little ways. Now that I know the change in his voice when running something off I can correct him.

Hi,

He is doing a nice job for you, hunting him by himself on his first season. Has made about 15-20 trees with a couple of misses and one deer he bumped, that he quit on his own. Deer was probably bedded down and he ran over the top of it. Keep shooting the coons down to him. Not bad for a young dog with no experience.
With his good cold nose, drifting track ability,and his ability to tree lay ups easily, he will definitely make a top notch cooner for you.

The night is as dark as the inside of Bulls hind end, the wife and kids are in the kitchen making all kinds of things for tomorrow and the house is smelling good. I think I will slip off and see if we can run a coon or two. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone and travel safe.

my female is finley river on moms side top and bottom zeb-3 top side wish you were closer.i like that blood my first dog 40 years ago was all finley river and was a nice hound ;

Hi,

In over 40 years of coonhunting, I have never been without a cold nose, accurate treedog. I have ALWAYS hunted a Finley River dog. They have always been a durable, go hunting, cold nose, accurate treedog anytime of year. The worse the conditions the better they look.

Hi,

Too much ice here. Hunt alone most nights. Cant afford to fall and break a hip at my age.

I only know of one way to make a coondog out of a pup or young dog, that was bred to be a coondog... Just you and that young dog in the woods, together, alone.

Zig HTX

Hi,

Should have more pups this summer. Female heat cycles totally screwed up last year. Too cold here to raise pups outdoors and too hot in late summer.

Just me and a young dog...night after night.

Haven't bred any outside females, but Zig is not an advertised stud dog. Breed him to my females. I know what will hit the ground that way. Guess work is done.

Hello Mr. Starke
Just an update on Spot..The last night I had her out , I was hunting with a Buddy of mine and his Ntch female. We turned the girls loose along the edge of a swamp both of them struck in and spot ran that coon through the swamp like she was tide to it. And when she came on the Tree in front of my buddies female, he turned to me and said my God what's wrong with your female, it sounds like someone is killing her. Hahaha... She came on the tree with this ungodly never ending screaming roar...I just started laughing and said that's how spot tree's... He said my goodness, all the hair on my neck is standing on end... And I started laughing harder, me too me too! I love it!... He couldn't quit talkin about it the rest of the night...

Unless you know the breeding and what to expect when they open, you could have that kind of experience, lol.

I love that female, but I am glad I sold her to you. I can not wait til that cross between Gr. Nt. Ch. Hardwood Whiner and Spot is made. I am looking forward to my pup.

rambler females bred?

Are any of your Rambler females bred to Zig? Are you planning on breeding all of them when they come in?

The weather has been pretty tuff here this winter. Jake has been doing okay. I'd like to see him let his mouth go on the tree more and stay better. Doing what I know to do for him: hurrying to tree and tie him, I give him at least one coon a night.

Hi,

The trick is to give him the 'right coon". That comes with experience. When you get close to him, turn your light off and just creep in to him. Taking just a little longer each time to get there until he becomes a more solid tree dog. Those are probably very cold trees he is making and he is a little unsure of himself. Praise him when he has that coon before you shoot it down to him. Make a big deal out of it. You have a young dog who probably has as good a nose as his daddy. They are few and far between.

Always think. Having a good young dog with that much natural ability is very ease to ruin, set back, or mishandle. Offer still stands to buy that dog. The mouth, ability, brains, and nose is all there. Exactly what I breed for. You just have to be a smart trainer to finish him.

Zig

Hi,

Zig and I left the house about 150 am Thursday morning. Spitting snow when we left. Wind blowing about 10-15 mph. Already ice and snow on the ground that hasn't melted off.

Drove about 8-9 miles to a 700-800 acre corn field with creeks and timber down thru it.

As we were leaving the truck about 210am, it started a mixture of sleet, freezing rain, and snow. Wind picked up and it felt like little knives hitting your face.

Zig struck and worked a track in there over a mile. He treed about 230am. When I got there he was treed on a huge den tree. Could hear Zig the entire track over the wind and elements. Petted the old boy and told him , lets head for the truck.

It's not how many coon you give them, it's the right coon. ( it's not quantity, it's the quality of the track they run, working up a old bad track and running it right, locating the tree right and staying treed the way you want.) that's one of the coons you shoot out...These 50 to 75 yard smokin hot tracks that just about any dog can run, those are the ones you want to leave and run another day.. But that's just one mans opinion. The old timers I used to hunt with would tell me this all the time, and I believe it to be true. At least now I do....hahaha...trial and error, and they had a lot more than I did. Good hunting to all.
