11-05-12 HTX Hunt

I decided to take Hardware to his 3rd HTX hunt last night. HTX Hunts are only a hour long, which makes it good for getting home early if you have to work in the morning, which I did. A friend of mine that is starting to take some interest in coon hunting wanted to see Hardware go, so he came along with us. We seen several coon on the road on our way to the club. It sure seemed like the coons were going to be moving good. Well we get our guide and judge, it is someone I have never met before, turns out he is a heck of a good guy with some awesome hunting spots. Long story short, Hardware makes 5 trees in that hour, we scored on 4 single coon and took 1 fault. I got to figuring out of that 60 min. he treed at least a minimum of 25 min. mandatory tree time during that hour. So, as it turns out because of the amount of trees we made, Hardware was required to tree for nearly half of the total hunt time. Now, back to the long story short, we had a good hunt. Hardware has now been in 3 HTX hunts and passed all of them, which has earned him the HTX title. I was proud of the old dog, I thought he put on a good show.

Thanks for the congrats Murph. I agree they are a good thing. I enjoyed the 3 that I hunted in. I plan on going to some more, but I will be going as a Judge to help out. I appreciate the time and effort put in by the 3 different guides and Judges I had. They put their time into helping out and supporting the HTX hunts, now it's my turn to help out a little.

The HTX hunts are enjoyable and work well for the working man during the week, if a local club is holding the event. They can be tough. I believe UKC had researched the data on the past HTX hunts not long ago and the average "pass/attempts" rates were low. So, it can be tough, but fun. You can hunt at your own pace. No running to the trees. No fussing, feuding or whining and crying to listen to. You don't have to worry if your going to draw out with bad cast. These are just a few of the reasons that make the HTX hunts enjoyable to me. It's important to me for a hound to be able to perform and tree coon on their own, HTX hunts and HTX titles help to verify that. To those out there that have not tried a HTX hunt yet, give it a try, it challenges the hound not the handler. To make it more challenging enter a HTX hunt when the leaves are off. We all know hounds aren't perfect and the HTX hunts help prove that. You won't hear all the "IF's" you normally hear at the end of a hunt. HTX hunts, Pass or Fail.

11-10-12 hunt 1st night of season

Me and the brother hunted the first night of season together last night. Brother had his black female RAVEN and I took ZEUS and BETTY. First drop Raven and Zeus get treed a couple hundred yards from us. We get to the tree they are split less than 10 yrds apart. Raven is treed on a vine that goes up into a large dead snag tree. We find her coon balled up in the top of the snag. We search Zeus tree, It's a large woolly oak. We can't find the coon. We don't make the attempt to harvest Raven's coon. We fear that we may lose it in a hole, so we leave it to tree again later on this season. Second drop, Raven and Zeus get treed together. We get to the tree, they have the coon. Zeus is several feet off the ground hugging the tree treeing. This coon comes out, and Betty the pup decides to take hold. Once she gets a coon in her mouth, she doesn't want to let go. Third drop, They get treed together again, they have they coon. Betty takes a hold again. I run her a little drag and get a few barks out of her. Betty showed good improvement. She doesn't like the truck rides. Seems to take a lot out of her, but I think by the end of the night I was seeing some improvement there also. Fourth drop, they get in deep, and loop back in our direction. Garmin shows Raven leaving the section and Zeus gets treed in the section. We head to Zeus. We get to the tree, I can't find a coon but I do see a couple leaf nests and possibly a high hole. He may have missed, but he thinks he is right. We lead out. Raven is 3/4 of a mile deep. We drive around and get with in 400 yds of her. Raven is treed in a big oak that still has lots of leaves and is limited on how you can shine it. Can't find the coon. We head to the truck and call it a night. Temperatures were warm, it was still 57 when we stopped. We also seen a total of 10 coon last night while we were hunting. It wasn't a bad hunt for the first night of season. Below are a few pics of last nights hunt.

Betty (Rattler X Penny)

Chris,
I'm sure glad to hear Betty is coming around. I knew she had grit and was tree minded. Just wasn't sure where it had went to.LOL!!! Keep me posted on her progress. Her sisters here at the house are looking promising and i'm hearing good things out of 2 of her brothers. One in Indiana and a natural "freak" in Arkansas. Good luck...........Lowell

3rd and 4th night of season

I stayed home Sunday night(2nd night of season). Me and the daughter(Haley) went for a hunt Monday night. Haley has just gotten her driving permit and was more than willing to drive me around coon hunting. I told her she could drive, but would have to handle a dog. Haley has always been good with the hounds, she can teach them to lead, load and just plain handle well, oh and she can also teach them to shake too Anyway, Monday night we turned Hardware and Betty loose. First drop, Hardware strikes in quick and trees quick. Betty took off hunting good. We get to the tree and shine, Hardware has the coon. Haley takes Hardware back to the truck and I stay back and work with Betty. Betty and I then head to the truck and we move. Second drop, Hardware strikes in quick and tree in short order. This track was a little longer and crossed the creek. We head into Hardware, he is across the creek. Haley and I find a place to cross that is just a little deeper than our boots(Yep, wet feet). We get to the tree, Hardware has the coon. We head for the truck and take the long way home, so Haley can get a little more drive time practice.

Third night of season(last night). I picked a friend of mine up and we took Zeus and Betty out for a hunt. First drop, Zeus falls treed in a couple hundred yds from the truck. Betty went hunting good and eventually backs Zeus on the tree. We shine the tree and find the coon. It's a big bob-tailed boar coon. We lead out and move. second drop, We cut them loose, Zeus goes out 40 yds and loops right back towards us and trees 30yds from us. We let him tree awhile before heading into him. We get to the tree and shine. Zeus has the coon. The coon is less than 15 feet up. We lead out, load up and call it a night. It was a nice short hunt. Betty has been showing some form of improvement every time out now, which makes it interesting. Below are some pictures from the last couple nights hunting.

Good News On Betty !!!!!

Chris,
Glad to hear that Betty is starting to go the distance with Zeus and is loading up on the trees. I didn't want to cut the conversation short, but we had just knocked "Ricky" out of a post oak. I'd like to hear that good locate for myself.

11-19-12 hunt

We had to take a few days off because of Deer season here. I was able to go for a short hunt last night. I took Hardware and Betty. First drop Hardware strikes a track in at 200 yds. He gets it heated up and trees in at over 600 yds. Betty is trees with him. I take my time getting to them as I stop to listen to Betty tree along the way. I finally get to them I can see it is a smaller tree with a big ole' coon pushed all the way to the top. I let the hounds know they did a good job and we headed back to the truck. Second drop, I cut them loose, I can see Hardware is winding something to the east. He makes a short loop in that direction, then all of a sudden "BAM"!, Hardware catches the coon on the ground and fights with it a minute. The coon makes it up a tree and Hardware trees it immediately with Betty backing. They are in some thick stuff. I let them know they did a good job and we head for the house. I have found coon in 9 out of the last 11 even trees Hardware has made. A friend of mine stopped by this same evening and picked up Zeus to hunt. My friends brother was wanting a coon or two to do some taxidermy work on, so he volunteered himself and Zeus to get those coons. Zeus came through for them, treeing 2 singles and a couple dens. This fellow is ready to go again tonight, he is wanting to take Zeus out again for a hunt. Below is a picture of last nights hunt. I was approximately 8 feet away from the tree when I took the picture, that was as close as I could get to the tree without clearing a path to it. There are 2 dogs in the picture, Betty and Harware. They are hard to see because it was so thick where they treed.

Yes Clyde thats it. All I know is makes it tough to get to a dog sometimes. The more timber that gets cut around here that stuff seems to thrive. You got any of it down there where you hunt?

Hunts during season

I have been out a few more times this season. My friends Mike Dunn and Matt White from Alabama came up for a hunt this past weekend. Both Mike and Matt where hunting 12 month old male pups off of Harpeth River Blue Jack. Jack is a brother to my Hardware dog. Anyway we had a fair hunt during the weekend. The weather could have been better. I got to see Mike's little male dog tree his own coon. Also got to see Matt's male tree his own coon also. They looked pretty good considering they haven't been hunted much. I hunted Zeus one night and we met up with John Bishop and Sonic one night. Zeus and Sonic are also out of Harpeth River Blue Jack. We accomplished our goal of giving Mike and Matt's young hounds some Illinois coon exposure. Thanks to my brother and friend Mike Fleek for helping put the Alabama boys in the timber this last weekend.

I have had Zeus out a few times since then. Hunting was super good the first week of season for me, but the hunting has gotten tougher here for me. Truthfully I am kind of glad the hunting has gotten tougher. Slamming coon after coon is ok. but not that fun and interesting after awhile too me.

I hunted Zeus last night and my buddy took Woody. Zeus made a slick Hack berry tree right off the start and treed 3 dens after that. Woody has never been hunted at night and thats exactly what he looked like a pup thats never been hunted. We will keep putting Woody in the timber and see if we can get him to come around. Below is a short video of Zeus treed last night, just click on the picture to play.

We don't. We've got a lot of privet hedge, thank God it doesn't have thorns.

Chris,
How's Betty doing. Her sisters are starting to go the distance with Reb and open on track. G I Jane is very tree minded and wants to tree a little on every tree. Lucy Liu smells on some trees but is more track minded at the time.

Lowell, Glad to hear your little females are progressing. Betty is going the distance nearly every time out. She is also getting treed regularly now with the Zeus or Hardware. She has not opened on track yet, but by watching her actions it won't be long. She has had a few coon out on her and she does not like to let go of one once she clamps down. She still doesn't take the hauling well but think it's getting better. I am probably going to find Betty a new home. It's not because I don't like her. I do like Betty, but I have recently got some pups out of Jack that are around the same age as Betty, that I need to work. I feel the Jack pups are really what I should focus on at this time.

I see where you are going to breed Reb. I wish you the best of luck with that. I hope Reb proves to be a Top Stud for you. Take care and continued success with your hounds.

Lance, next time I go down that way will be end of Dec. to the first part of Jan. to pick up some pups out of Jack and help get them delivered. Most of the time when I'm moving pups I don't stick around too long. I usually on a tight schedule in order to meet everyone on time. I may try to hunt down there in Feb. on Joe Wheeler Refuge with Mike. May try and get up with Jimmy Ritter next time I'm down there also. I'm sure Mike would take anyone hunting anytime he has some free time. The camera has become part of my main coon hunting equipment. I don't usually go hunting without it. Take care, Chris

Thanks for the kind reply Scott. Zeus does take a good picture up on the wood, but he is definitely not a bench dog. We were having a easy season here, but things have started to get tougher now. We have not hit it as hard as last year. I don't think the drought had much affect on the coon population here, maybe a little here and there. We don't shoot every one we tree, we have left several sitting up this year. We have seen several more hunters out this year. They say coon prices are up a bit, maybe that has something to do with the increased hunters. It's always good to hear from you. I will be keeping track of you and that nice young hound you are promoting. Best of luck and continued success with you and your fine hounds.

Some hunt pics

Me and the brother have been hunting some together. He has been taking his 5 year old black female and the mother to that 5 year old black female, which is 11. It is truly something special to see an old dog like that with all the heart, drive and desire still go out and preform. This old gal has also raised several litters. I just have the up most respect for those old veteran hounds that are driven by their natural instincts to continue to do what they were bred to do. This was the first time I have ever hunted with this old Black female named Spook. She truly impressed me. I am glad I got to see her perform in the timber. She treed one with Raven backing, then she back Raven on one and then treed one by herself and Raven treed one by herself. Coon was seen in every tree we made. Enough with the Black dogs for now, now back to the blues. I have only been hunting young pups. I have hunted a female and male pup out of Dual Grand Anderson Fox Creek Penny x Grntch Mailies Rattler dog and hunted a couple times a male pup out of Jack and Thunder. They have all progressed in some ways and all still need lots of hunt time to continue to progress. I feel a little bad I have a 7 month old female out of Hardware that I have not messed with at all. Luckily a friend of mine has kept her and been messing with her some. I guess maybe I need to sell a couple to thin down where I could give more attention. Below are a few pics of some of the hunts Me and the Brother have been on.

Took Zeus out for a hunt tonight. We had 7 inches of fresh snow and a full moon with temps under 20 degrees with a light North Westerly wind . I cut Zeus loose twice , he covered a lot of ground and hunted both sections out well. I was told by some fellow coon hunters that I would not have much luck tonight. They were right. Never had a bark tonight.

Stopped by a local club to visit. They were holding a UKC hunt tonight. They had 4 Nitech dogs and 4 registered dogs.

Thanks for the info Russ. I dont feel so bad now. I knew it was going to be a tough night but I had to try it. It was nice talking with you too. We got a few good laughs in as usual. Take care and we will get together soon for a good old fashion coon hunt one of these nights.

1-04-13 hunt

My buddy wanted to take his young male(Woody) out for a hunt last night. I decided to go with him. I took Zeus. First drop, we cut Zeus and Woody. They went hunting good. Garmin showed them making their way towards a road, so I headed to cut them off. They stopped short of the road and turned back and head the other way. I got close to Zeus and caught him and put him up. Woody was still out hunting. Buddy head into him and caught him and we moved. Next drop Zeus falls treed on a den and as we are looking it over Woody decides to help out with the treeing some. Woody has been hunting better and getting treed some. Last night was his 7th or 8th night ever in the woods. He is progressing well, considering no more that he has been hunted. Woody has one of those good carrying type mouths that can be heard for a long long ways.My buddy had to call it an early night. so I headed back and picked up my Joe pup . First drop with Zeus and Joe, they hunted the section out well but not a bark. The little Joe pup went every step of the way this time. Next drop, Zeus and Joe get in at 800yds down by the creek. Zeus trees, I head into them It is a slick tree. There is a large tree that has fallen from across the creek into the tree that Zeus is treed on. It is a dandy cross out tree. Once again the little Joe pup went every step of the way and was checking out the tree. I make a couple more drops with no barks and drive to load up the dogs. I decide for one more drop. Zeus and Joe make a big loop in the section and Zeus comes treed 100 yrds from me on a den. Joe was there checking out the den. I wasn't really expecting Joe to take off and hunt like he did tonight. He has been normally hanging around close, but not tonight. It's just a matter of time before he clicks, but I am going to have give him more of an opportunity than I have been. I had no tracks tonight just falling treed. Below are a couple pictures of last nights hunt. Zeus is out of Harpeth River Blue Jack X Blue Midnight Star, Woody is out of Harpeth River Blue Jack X Briner's Blue Midnight Balie and Joe is out of Harpeth River Blue Jack X McGinnis Blue Thunder(3rd cross)
