I have an interesting one for you. Have a dog that lost her voice last September/October right around when it got dry and the kennels were dusty. We attributed it to the dust but it didn't come back after the rain came. Took her in and they did bloodwork, chest rads, and thyroid levels. Bloodwork had slightly elevated eosinophils, chest rads were normal and she had a low t4 and high tsh. They said there have been cases of laryngeal paralysis with hypothyroid so she was placed on levothyroxine trial and over the past 6 months her thyroid levels have normalized but still no voice. This dog has always had ear problems and allergies. My question is could the chronic allergies cause her thyroid levels to be low and be causing this voice loss? We thought recently about checking to make sure she doesn't have an underlying tick disease as well but would any of these diseases cause voice loss? She had no clinical signs of hypothyroid except for the voice loss which still remains.

Any disease that can affect the nerves that supply the larynx area can lead to voice loss in dogs. That includes infections, neoplasia (cancer), inflammatory processes, and hypothyroidism. Once the nerve damage is done, many times it is irreversible.

Dr. Hallada I have a 2yr. old Walker male diagnosed with masticatory muscle myositis. He has no noticeable symptoms other than muscle loss on the right side of his head. He was OK Thursday morning but it was very noticeable that evening. Hunted him Friday night and he was OK. My question is will a prednisone treatment stop any further degeneration and what dosage he weighs 60lbs.THANK YOU for your time.Asking because I had a first year vet today and she wanted to do more research before she prescribes any meds.

Stay away from these products if you care about your dogs health. In my opinion they should be removed from the market due to their high toxicity to dogs and cats.

Stick with Simparica along with Permethrin spray for added tick prevention.

I'm not sure how far you live from Champaign, IL but that is where I'd take this dog for a second opinion from the university. These are challenging cases and if it is a degenerative myopathy then the prognosis is usually not good. I'm sure your veterinarian can figure out an appropriate dose for this condition. She's probably consulting with an internal medicine specialist for this one. Have faith in her.

Doc is their anything to give for a preventative for coccidia besides a good worming schedule. A few dogs that mine have been around have gotten it and two have died. Mine seem healthy but if I could give them something because they have been around them it would be great.

I'm not familiar with anything that would be safe for dogs that is over the counter. I'd work with your veterinarian on getting a bottle ordered that you can use in the kennel. Albon is what I've always used to treat it. See if your veterinarian can write you a prescription for a bottle or order you one. You can use the liquid for easy dosing in pups and tablets for larger dogs.

The key with coccidia is to dig up about a foot of soil and replace it with sand or new uncontaminated soil or rocks. I replaced a kennel one time with river rock and bleached all my kennels down while treating all my dogs. It's a mess to clear up. Never would wish it on anyone. I like those cement runs for this reason and kennels that are up above the ground that are easy to sanitize. You will need a steam cleaner and bleach to get it out of the kennels.

Ok thanks. My dogs look and act fine so I think I am in the clear. Just wondered if there was something available that might prevent them from getting it. Hopefully I won�t have to do all of that lol.

i like Interceptor Plus because it is broad spectrum against tapes, whips, hooks, rounds, and prevents heartworm.

What is your opinion on supplements? There are so many out there, are they beneficial and what do you think the average hound that competes needs nutritionally that a complete diet isn't providing? Extra glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, ect.?

I have a 4 month old pup that is complete raw around his mouth and lips. He had a case of strangles earlier but this showed up afterwards. His little mate in the pen has no problems.

I think adding whole foods to diets can be beneficial like liver, hamburger etc. when you need added calories and energy. Adding coconut oil or cod liver oil to diets of dogs in small amounts has really helped skin coats and can add calories too for more energy. There are a few supplements that might help in dogs on the road deal with stress. Platinum Performance has a really good line of supplements. There are a bunch of them out there now and I'd read the reviews on Amazon and other pet sites before investing in them. Adding a high quality Calf Milk Replacer has been a common practice as well to add energy to a diet for those hard to keep hounds. Some use Goat Milk also that is high in fat content.

It really depends on the dog and how they respond to the supplements. I'd say there are more problems from over supplementation than under supplementation. Feeding a well balanced high quality diet is always the starting point to keeping a dog healthy and in good condition. Some of these diets like Pro Plan Performance 30/20 and Eukanuba Performance 30/20 already have more than enough to support the average athlete.

Supplementing diets like these can actually be harmful or counterproductive. Breeding dogs can really benefit from adding supplements to diets such as a female that is nursing a large litter of pups. They require higher levels of energy and calcium. Feeding a high quality puppy food to a female that is nursing really helps her maintain weight and produce good quantitiy and quality of milk. You can add in Calf Milk Replacer there too to aid in energy demands. I usually supplement with a high quality canned puppy food like Eukanuba Puppy canned. Milk Aid has been used for years to aid in milk production in early lactation and seems to do a good job.

There are some good Lyme vaccines on the market that are worth using in endemic Lyme dz. areas. I would look into them if you are concerned. I vaccinated all my dogs for Lyme dz. when I lived in the midwest. I think it's a good idea.

I don't think they are 100% protective against Lyme dz. , but I do think they have a value in a preventative wellness program against this dz. Always start with good quality tick prevention first.

Ya I've seen it a few times. It's called Puppy Strangles. It's a Staph infection and it requires a combination of Prednisone and an antibiotic such as Clavamox or Cephalexin. It's one of the rare diseases caused by a bacteria that requires a steroid. Hey may have scars from this for life on the skin but many do heal fine with time. I'd also give this guy a dose of NexGard to rule out demodex mites (red mange). These new flea/tick products are great for treating demodex.

Flea/Tick Prevention:

I am recommending a combination of Simparica or Bravecto as a systemic product and Soresto or Permethrin Spray as a topical product as a repellent. It's so inexpensive now to spray these dogs down with Permethrin spray prior to cutting them loose. Just buy some Martins 10% Permethrin spray and dilute it 1oz to a gallon of water and apply a light mist over the dog prior to cutting loose. You can also spray your clothes with this same formula and let the clothes dry on the cloths line prior to putting them on. I usually spray my chaps or gators as well before heading out.
