Question
After reading your thread I've been thinking. If a person owns property
with a creek running through it (owns both sides of the creek). If that person panned for gold and found some, where would they sell it? How
much trouble is it to sell? Do you have to tell the buyer or anyone where
you found it, do you have to pay a tax? Do you have to register and give a bunch of information etc.. Just wondering?

Re: Mineral Laws
quote:This is how I go about ,each state has different laws, But my next post will be links to smelting facilities . If you get enough you send it one of them and they melt it down ,pour it into a button (almost like a coin but cone shaped )the smelting gets rid of most of the impurities . So then you can sell you botton to a jeweler or right to the smelter. Nice nuggets are rare don't melt them down ! If you do find gold on your property just stay tight lipped about it .This post is long but Ind. has gold trust me .

This is where things get a little sticky . I don't have web link for all the states laws on this matter . But I do know alot of streams like trout streams in Pa. is protected same for Ohio streams with live mussels in the gravel beds . You will need to do some research in the state that you plan to prospect in . But if you know a land owner that will give you written permission to prospect in his Creek providing he owns it ,you should be OK . But that was one of the reasons I joined the GPAA , there are enough claims owned or leased from landowners to relieve a little worry from you . If you have doubts to the matter you can contact the State Dept .of Natural Rescources to help you out . But boys if you reaaly want to do this you will have do some research on your own . Idid and still do research . I've gotten gold from Alaska .Ohio,Ind., Ill., Mo. and Idaho . LOL,I have yet to find any in my home state of WVa . But that is the lure of gold ,Boys its all in the hunt for it ,,,,,If it was easy to find We would all be rich . Don't get me wrong its not easy work ,but it is a great relaxing hobby that get you out in some beautiful country ,meet new interesting people ,,that sometimes old Mother Earth will reward you with some of her wealth . Theres an Old Prospectors saying that goes "May your bottom turn yellow !!" meaning hope you find alot of gold .

Has everyone got all their gear together ? Backpack loaded up , Buckets and shovel handy ? It's 41 degrees here today ,thinking about adding some water into my panning tub on the deck , but i'm afaid of it getting back below freezing ,maybe wait a few more days then do it . Man ,I do love that adrenalin rush when you start fanning that blacksand back and you start seeing that gold come uncovered .

Just a reminder .
Naturally occurring gold can be found in almost all fifty states. This gold may be still embedded in rock, known as "lode gold", or it may have been deposited in a placer (a natural concentration of gold particles in sand or gravel bars) after weathering from the host rock -- or it may be found in plant tissues, or seawater, or even present in minute quantities in beach sand. (Gold is found in copious amounts on Alaska beaches and even in Oregon.) If your interest in gold is more than academic, the trick is to find locations with enough gold to make it worthwhile to try to recover some of it.
The states in which major amounts of gold have been found are: (listed in no particular order) Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Although the historic records are generally not very good, small amounts of gold have also been found in Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont -- which taken together with the big producers means that in three out of every five states, you have a decent chance to find a little gold for yourself.
