That can be a lot of different things Steve and I wouldn't be able to tell without examination. You are doing the right thing by taking her in to your veterinarian. Coonhound paralysis usually wipes the rear legs out completely and the dogs are down and unable to rise. Your dog might just have a spinal chord trauma or infection that hopefully your vet can help you with. I see this a lot in coondogs that climb trees and fall. Let me know what they find.

allergies

Doc, i have a 1 yo male blue tick. He has had some terrible allergies this spring/ early summer. His ears itch him when he barks but they are clean and look good. He has also been sneezing like crazy in the woods, especially when the woods are a little dry. its defiantly interfering with his hunting ability. should i be concerned and is there anything i can do for his symptoms.

thanks

Allergies are common in dogs, but dogs usually manifest allergies through their skin instead of respiratory system. A few dogs also show symptoms of allergies through the respiratory system and yours may be one of them that has both. The ears are a common place for allergies to show up in dogs. Especially food allergy and pollen type allergies known as Atopic Dermatitis. There are some newer allergy medicines for dogs now that don't have steroids in them.

One is called Apoquel and is a tablet given twice daily for 14 days, then every day through the allergy season or all the time depending on the dog. The other is called Cytopoint and is an injectable product that lasts for up to 2 months. I really like Cytopoint in dogs with true Atopic Dermatitis. If the dog has concurrent yeast or bacterial infection present, these medications don't work as well or not at all. It's important to have the ears examined closely to check all the way down to the ear drum to be sure there isn't a bacterial/yeast infection present also.

Older therapies for allergies in dogs include antihistamines and steroids of the corticosteroid family like prednisone. Antihistamines are sometimes helpful, but most time they really don't help that much in dogs. There are a few lucky dogs that get benefit from antihistamines like Claritin, Hydroxyzine, Chlortrimeton, or a combo product that is really popular with the derm people called Temaril P. Tem-P is a combination of Prednisone and an antihistamine so it lowers the amount of steroid needed.

Benadyrl is not that effective in dogs for atopy and usually just sedates dogs. It is helpful for anaphylactic reactions like vaccine reactions or insect bites and possibly snake bites, but not that good for other allergies from pollen.

Steroids are helplful and inexpensive in dogs for atopic dermatitis. Long term use can be hard on the liver of dogs and lead to diabetes and obesity as well as other diseases. I usually reserve these drugs for short term allergies and seasonal allergies in dogs where the owners can't afford other forms of treatment. An injection can be used for one time use to treat allergies in dogs for flea allergy or seasonal allergy. Depo medrol inj. lasts for 30-40 days in dogs and provides good relief in many dogs. Kenalog or Vetalog (Triamcinolone) is also helpful as an injection and lasts for 7-10 days in dogs. Oral forms of these steroids are usually Prednisone, Prednisolone, Triamcinolone, or Temaril P. I prefer Triamcinonlone and Tem-P myself for decreasing side effects in dogs.

Topical products are helpful in dogs with ear infections or allergies causing inflammation. Claro has been a home run hit and lasts for 30 days per dose. This needs to be applied at the veterinary office. There are many other ear medications that are helpful including Panalog, Otomax, Mometemax which need to be applied daily to twice daily and Osurnia which lasts 5-7 days. BNT is also very popular now and I"ve used it for years for long lasting effects in dogs ears. It is compounded and applied by veterinarians and lasts for 14-21 days in each ear.

I'd say it's best to work with a good veterinarian on treating allergies in dogs. Sometimes what we think is allergies, is just an infection that needs to be treated or ear mites.

I've had good luck with using Olive Oil in the ears of dogs for maintenance long term. Just apply a few drops in each ear daily for a week for treatment and then once weekly for prevention. Olive oil is anti bacterial, anti fungal and has calming properties on the skin and conditioning properties as well.

Pups can be vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age if they are weaned from their mother. Vaccination with a good quality Parvo and Distemper vaccination should begin as soon as they are weaned. Repeat this vaccine every 3 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks of age. Rabies vaccination is given between 4-6 months of age depending on your state. All of these should be given again one year later.

Good vaccine companies are Zoetis, Merial, and Merck.

Seen an advertisement for natural flea & tick tag, good for one year. EASYDEFENCE FLEA & TICK TAG.
Ingredients:
Gerniol 0.93% Peppermint 0.1% Almond oil 98.97%

I wouldn't trust this for any length of time. Any one tried this? Don't think I would have much faith that it would work. It contains cheaper oils, tag is expensive. $60 per tag

In fact if you drew the solution up and then squirted it all back into the bottle, you would have a hub filled with .01 cc of Ivermectin. Then draw up some gatorade through the same needle and syringe to dilute it out and give this orally.

Hey Doc, I was going through some of the posts and information on here, this is pulled off from way back on page 4, but I have a way to give this microfilia dose of ending up with .01 Ivermectrin per 50 lbs that is easier to measure and dose for all weights of dogs. Correct me if this is inaccurate.

Bear with me, the end dosage is simple, but the explanation of how you get there, is not necessarily simple.

The end dosage is .1 (1/10 of 1cc) diluted 50:1, then simply given at the normal .1 (1/10) of 1cc per 10 lbs.

Here's how I get there.

.1 of Ivermectrin X 50 equal .1 parts of dilution =5cc of total mixture.

.1 divided 50 times = .002. So there's .002 of Ivermectin per unit in the mixture.

How many units are there? 50. There's 50 individual 1/10's in that total of 5cc's. So there's .002 of Ivermectrin per 1/10th of 1cc in the mixture.

At this point you just have to draw up the normal .1 (1/10 of 1cc) per 10lbs.

Example: A 50lb dog would get .5 (5/10's of a cc) .002 X 5=.01

If you're starting with a 1% solution which is 10mg/ml and you want to get to a .1% solution which is 1 mg/ ml. You just need to draw up 1cc of the 1% solution and mix it with 9 cc of propylene glycol. Then dose at .1cc per 10#.
Much easier.

That would be easier, thanks! Lots of good info on this thread, that's why I keep coming back to it. I typically dose at the standard .1 per 10 lbs that would also get rid of roundworms, hooks, and whips, but it's nice to have a formula for dosing at the heartworm only dose if one chooses.

I like the higher dose in the coonhounds myself. I have friends in the Mississippi Delta region that use that higher dose every 15 days due to heartworm resistance issues in that area.

My dogs weigh around 50 -55 pounds so I dose them for hearworms with 1/2 cc of invermectin and 3 cc's of pyrantel poamate. My question is, if the 1/2 cc dose of iver also gets the gut worms, should I just forget the pyrantel and use pancake syrup instead?

I like your combination of Ivermectin and Pyrantel. And If I were the dogs I'd want the syrup too. haha

I have a young dog that has been shaking his head quite a bit. It was mostly in the kennel and hardly ever while hunting. Now he does it while hunting too. Thinking it was ear mites since I had that problem with another dog and insides of the ears on both dogs were blackish looking with same symptoms, I put some ear mite lotion in his ears for a few days. The blackish color and wax disappeared but he still shakes his head. His ears have no noticeable odor and he doesnt ever scratch at them just shakes his head. I have also tried peroxide. Any thoughts on what the cause is? Thanks.

Sounds like an ear infection to me. I'd have that looked at and treated. Many people think because their dogs are shaking their heads they have ear mites, when it is usually a foreign body or bacterial/ yeast infection causing it. If it gets through the ear drum it can be life threatening. Olive Oil is a good product for treating inflamed ears in the mean time. It is anti bacterial, anti fungal, and helps with inflammation. Apply it daily for a week.

Thanks for the response. Would a drop or two of olive oil weekly or bi-weekly in each ear be a good bacterial preventive/cleaner for their ears once I get this cleared up?

It's not going to hurt. I like it and I've used it in my own ears when I had ear infections. Nobody makes much money selling it for that purpose though.

Thanks for all the advice you've given so far. I've gotten through about half of the thread and hope to finish soon. What do you recommend for ticks and/or biting flies and what are the side effects? I know some remedies have some.

Simparica tablets combined with either Permethrin spray or Seresto collars. The spray can be applied lightly each time before hunting. If the ears are getting hit by flies the Seresto collars have helped as well as a Permethrin gel applied to the ears.

Spray the kennel premises and surrounding areas with Permethrin spray to keep ticks, fleas, and flies away.

I have tried pancake syrup and several other liquids without much success (dogs don't like it).

Now, I just inject it into a hard boiled egg. The dogs have never rejected or fought with me over it, and I know the egg is good for them.
