I like that picture also Tommy, looks like that's a little bit better walk through that than the walk we took going in too Ann and blueduck.

Sleepy, it is pretty good walking, but the water was just as deep. Just glad I can call him off a tree to keep me from getting wet.
Steve, I have been wanting to go up and make a hunt with you, and looking forward to it.
Eddie, & Mr. Jack Thanks for the kind comments. I'm sure we will be making some noise, but I can tell you, the dog on the end of my lead has a long ways to go to be close to the one on Jeremy's.

Atchafalay basin

Tommy went back last night and turn lose in the first spot we cut. Not sure if it was the same one or not but it ran the same way and this time he come off the ox bow a little bit to wide and ended up in my back pack and only half his body was able to fit in it. I walk back to the truck and cut back in the same spot in front of the truck and I found her down the levee if front of the check in station with two, and call it a night just in case you would like to come go tonight.

Took Blueduck and Janey behind the Mississippi River levee Thursday night. Didn’t get a bark on the first turn out, so I loaded them up and move up river. As I was riding up river, I shined a coon on the ground next to the water, so I cut them loose to him. Instead of heading straight to the coon, they went to the right, and headed up river. Eventually the swung back around and picked up the track. They ran him about 150 yards and sounded like they caught him on the ground. A few seconds later they both locked down treed. As I was walking into the tree, Blueduck shut up, but Janey was blowing the top out. As I reached the tree Blueduck started again but was 15 feet up above. The coon had climbed a leaning Willow, and Blueduck went up after him. The coon was at the end of the top and Blueduck was about 5 feet from him. I dropped my old rifle and run underneath him, to catch him when he falls. With me focusing on him, Janey went up about 8 feet. I really had a mess on my hands now. Janey fell out and luckily she fell into some vines that broke her fall. The coon jumped out, and off she went. Blueduck managed to turn around and walked down the tree to safety. By the time Blueduck got on the trail, Janey treed him again. I found the coon pretty quick and let them have this on. I wish I knew how to stop him from climbing. If this continues, it will not end good.

COON HUNTING

That was quite an adventure Tommy and I'm glad they both are safe and got their coon. I Remember one time me and Mr. Frank was hunting along a river and my hound Bonnie got way up in a leaning oak out over the river and as she tried to turn around she fell and hit the river with a big pop and was just floating off. I dove in and got her back to the bank and after a while she caught her breath back and wobbly got back on her feet. It usually don't end good if they keep insisting on climbing those leaners. Janey sounds like she is making a fine hound also. Good Luck with them and Take Care.

Took Blueduck one last time to stretch his legs before the Winter Classic. I sent him through a pine thicket to a hard wood bottom. He struck a cold track when he was 250 yards in, and started working it. After about 400 yards, he got him running. The coon hit a cutover and made a big loop then headed back toward me. At 300 yards it turned back and headed north, back through the cut over on out into the swamp. He was now close at 700 yards and getting deeper, so I rode around to get closer. The wind had picked up and I could just hear him when I stopped the Ranger. Sounded like he was locating, so I started heading to him. After reaching the swamp, I could tell, he wasn’t treed and heading back toward me. So I turned my light out and just stood there in water, listing to him. Out to my left I heard something big running through the water, a deer or hog was my guess. I got that sick feeling in my stomach and figured I’d make the best of it, and have a good talk with Blueduck. But before I could start making my way to where I heard the sound, I heard something else in the water about 75 yards to my right, only this sounded small, making very little sound. In fact I wasn’t sure if I really heard something or not. Blueduck was coming fast, and when he was 150 yards in front of me, he veered to my right and passed me headed back to the cutover. He turned east and went down along side of the cutover and locked up treed at 350 yards. I found him treed 175 yards in the middle of the cutover on a Pin Oak that went up into a big hollow Magnolia. I never did see the coon, but I could see the wet marks where the coon had went up and around a limb.

Headed for the Winter Classic

Tommy, sounds like you have got ole Blueduck ready. Jeremy is up there with Shadow. Shadow's foot is not completely healed, I thank Jeremy was going to hunt him up there tonight in one of the Money hunts and see how he does on that foot and if he is ok. He will hunt him in the Classic. The best of luck to both you guys and the great blue dogs that ya'll are hunting. I wish you both the best.

Mr. Tommy I love that picture of Blueduck treed in the middle of Wall Bayou. That is a beautiful setting. My kind of country.

Posted by BigContry on 02-13-2017 02:25 PM:

Thanks for the kind words Mr. Jack. I really like Blueduck. He’s still got a ways to go, but he my kind of dog. I talked with Jeremy up a Batesville. He sure is a nice fellow.

We had a great time at the Winter Classic, but both Rhett and myself didn’t do a thing.

Friday Night:
Rhett came up to me after meeting his cast member for Friday night and stated, that Case had his work cut out for him because he drew Sleepy and Redstick Ann. She is one fine hound. There was a couple questionable calls made and both Rhett and Sleepy had to play catch up the rest of the night.

Blueduck was the only male in his Cast and found himself a girlfriend and wanted to start a family as soon as we loaded them up. Those two dated the whole first hour, until she left the country. A young Bluetick female won our cast treeing the only coon by herself.

Saturday Night:
Rhett said Case wasn’t on his game at all Saturday, drawing minus early on in the hunt.

We cut our dogs up a beautiful bottom to the north. Blueduck got second strike and started trailing south, while the other three kept going north so we split the difference. Two walker dogs treed, and we headed to them. On the way to those two, the other dog treed 300 yards from them. By this time we were out of hearing of Blueduck. When we were shining the first tree, my Garmin showed Blueduck 7 tenths, treed in the middle of a dead end road. Was he treed or dead? The guide assured me that the road didn’t have any traffic, and it was only a driveway. I couldn’t hear him and sure could not declare him treed. Long story short, after running back and forth to 3 trees, I never got close enough to hear him. Never saw or heard him until the hunt was over. So I guess Deep and Alone isn't always a good thing!

Not much to report in the last week and half. Been hunting every other night, but aint seeing any coons. Don't know if ole Blueduck has forgotten how to tree a coon or what is going on. I know he has had a few, but I couldn't find them. Friday night I him up the bottom between two cut overs on CC35. He struck at 300 to the northeast next to the Daniel's Field road. I road around to get closer and just as I stopped the ranger, a big old coon crossed 25 yards in front of me, from one cutover into another one. Blueduck was close behine, coming fast. By the time I got Janey out the box, Blueduck was crossing. They left there screaming. 30 mins later they treedout in the cutover but on the oppsite from me. I drove around, and got as close as I could, but still had 280 yards to make my way to them. Trying to post a video but Photobucket don't ever work. Is there any other ways to post videos??????????

Case

If I was closer I would try Case on Lou. I like his Ped. I came down that way one year and stayed at Mr. Franks and hunt with him and Mr. Jack Smith and had a great time. That was Feb.15. Tramp was the Hot Stud dog back then. Case is a nice looking dog with a good PED. Hope he gets some good females. Dave Woofter New Lexington, Ohio.

Thanks for the kind works David. As close as I live to these two great Bluetickers, I've only hunted once with each of them. Draw out with Mr. Frank in Amite, La. one night. What sticks in my head the most was, the Overalls with the top buttons on both side undone, with a long sheeve shirt without any buttons buttoned. Lost my dog that night and I wouldn't leave the woods without him, Mr Frank didn't want to leave me, but I gave him no choice. I got my dog back and got picked up close to daylight. Had the pleasure of drawing out with Mr. Jack and Jeremy at Bluetick days last year. They were hunting that fine young hound Smoke that night. We had a dead cast, but it was enjoyable all the same.

Food

I enjoyed the Hunt with Mr. Frank and Mr. Jack but I really think what I liked the most was Mrs. Barbra put me in the Blue Room and cooked so much good food for me while I was there I felt like an old tick on a dog. I mean Mrs. Barbra can do some fine cooking. Good Day to You. Dave

Rhett and I had an outstanding hunt Thursday night. We made 7 trees and looked at 5 coons. Looks like Rhett's pup Deets, has turned the corner and has started to put it all together. He treed 2 of the 5 alone. Rhett was going to let Deets have the second one, but was off the mark a little. The coon came out right on top of Deets, and the fight was on. The coon eventually got away, then a real race started, so I sent Blueduck in to help him. We made our way back to the ranger, and took off to get closer. We got stuck and had to winch out on our way to the powerline. By the time we got to the powerline, they were treed at .7 miles. Well now we got to go back around through them bad holes, where we came from. On the way back we got stuck again, so we start winching again. The tie-rod broke, and the left front wheel turned completely sideways, which broke the axle. And that’s all I’ll say about that mess. Well 1.5 – 2 hours later we make it to the tree, and they were treeing harder than when they first started. The ole coon had made it back to one of his dens, and we were not able to find him again. I would have been really upset about the ranger, but seeing that puppy turn it on made it sweeter.

Smiling through all the work

Tommy it sounds like you and Rhett had a rough hunt, but like you said, looking at 5 coons in 7 trees and to have a young pup there turning the crank will smooth out a lot of wrinkles. It's been a while since I have looked at 5 coons in one night. That Deets pup sounds like he is going to make a good one. Good Huntin Rhett and Mr. Tommy Take care.

Posted by BigContry on 03-08-2017 07:29 PM:

I really think Deets will make a good one Mr. Jack. But man is he ever a hand full. That pup is like a coiled spring. He needs a handle put on him and a lot of hunting. Which Rhett's work schedule does not allow. Deets is a young mans dog, and you better not be scard of the dark, because he is going to get deep. Rhett asked me if I wanted to hunt him this week since I have Blueduck laid up. I said NO, too much dog for me. lol

Deets

That was a great hunt 5 out of 7 anywhere but especially for the Deep South. Sounds like yaw got a Stem Winder in Deets. I like a hound like that, about half wild and full of himself. Work him in the yard and put that handle on him and he will be a lot of fun. Take Care.

Well I took Blueduck back to the woods after a week’s rest. His voice is back to normal and sounded like his old self. I sent him into a big stand of pines off the O.B. Cow Lot road. It was misty raining and very winded. He got struck at 325 yards and started trailing back towards me, down the right side of a creek I turned him out on. At 190 yards, he crossed over to the left side of the creek, and turned back. He then went right back to where he struck, and then treed. I saw the coon before I made it to the tree. He was treed on a Pine and the coon was in the very top. This puzzled me, as to what happed on this track. He wasn’t treed in a den tree. The track never got hot, and he had just traveled up the left side of the creek to get to where he struck. If it wasn’t for this Garmin, I wouldn’t be asking myself these questions.

The temperature had dropped the last couple day, and was in the lower 50s – upper 40s last night. So I made my way over to hunt behind the Mississippi River levee. There is an awful lot of gators there, so this cool weather should have shut down some. As I was riding down the levee I spotted some eyes down near the water, so I drove down to the bottom and cut Janey out. She hit the woods like she smelt something but never opened. She eventually made her way to the river bank, and just took off running up and down the river playing. I could have rung her neck, but I didn’t, I caught her and put her back in the box, then headed on up river. While I was trying to round her up I sent Blueduck on up the river. By the time I got Janey back, Blueduck was 400 yards up river trailing. He was treed when I got there on a big Poplar. I found the coon sitting in a fork about 40 feet up, and knocked it out to him. I then moved on upriver a little farther and cut them both out. They struck a red hot track about 15 yards from the bike, and the race was on. They ran him some 700-800 yards back down river and treed behind one of the bar pits in another huge Poplar. I shined the tree as best as I could but couldn’t find him. When I had made my way back to the bike, I shined across the bar pit and there he set, in the tip top of that Poplar. By the time I got back to the truck it was near 10:00. That makes for a hard day at work, 5:00am comes fast.

About two weeks ago I received a call from Jason Childers, with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fishery’s, asking if I would be willing to guide a young man on the Youth Turkey Hunt at one of the WMAs. He didn’t even get the question out his mouth, before I was saying YES. I have been volunteering my help for years now, and look forward to this every year. This was be the third year that this young man (Blaice Gilmore) and myself has hunted together on the youth hunt. After a long walk in before light, Saturday’s day break found us sitting at the base of a big Pine. The first gobble came from over my left shoulder about 300 yards south. They had moved from where they were roosted the morning before. Studying the sound, we relocated to the ridge they were now on. 20 minutes after they hit the ground, Blaice made a good 40 yard shot on this bird.

On the way home from the Saturday’s turkey hunt, Donald called to ask if we were going coon hunting. So I got home and took a power nap before he came to pick me up. Emmylou got first tree on the first two trees. We couldn’t find the coon in the second tree, but I believe he was there. We had a really good hunt making 3 trees and look at two coons. On the last drop, Blueduck got struck at a little over ½ mile. I drove around to get closer and still had 470 yard walk to the tree. I had to take a picture of the eyes so Donald would think I was fibbing. LOL
