-- Johnson Branch Crockett, at stud, 2X's Sackett Jr (Cord & Tell) (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=408009)
How about another half brother sister cross on Crockett? I've got a female who will be 4 in april out of Cord and I've been looking at Crockett to breed her to. She's pretty nice. Good looks, hunts medium to wide, seems to have a great nose, and she has an awesome locate and is a treeee doggg. The only real fault i have to her is she can be a little too mouthy on track. Would she cross well on Crockett or do you think she might do better on another stud? I'm mostly a fan of older house lines, kansas dancer, and sackett/ yadkin river lines. Most of this new stuff just doesn't do it for me. Let me know what you think, your input is very appreciated. Heres my females pedigree:
................CH GRNITECH ROCK RIVER SACKETT JR.
.........GRCH GRNITECH SACKETT JR. SON
................NITECH MILLERS BAWLIN BECKY
....GRNITECH SONS ROCK RIVER CORD
................GRNITECH RASEN RIVER STYLISH JACK
.........'PR' MARSH HARD KNOCKING FIREBALL
................'PR' BLAKES DIRT
'PR' BIGWOODS KOONIN KODY
................GRNITECH BALLS STYLISH HICKORY NUT HARRY
.........GRNITECH STYLISH RIPPER
................'PR' ONEALS LOG CHAIN JEAN
....NITECH STYLISH JODY
................CH GRNITECH ROCK RIVER SACKETT JR
.........'PR' ROACHS ROCK RIVER JENNIE
................'PR' ROCK RIVER TILLEY
TreeSmokin, I like her pedigree!!
I like the 1/2 brother X sister cross and by your description of your Cord female I'd say she would match up with Crockett very well. These crosses work well as long as both don't have common bad traits and they good traits match up.
Crockett is a bawl mouth track dog that opens just about right for me, but he'll throw a chop mouth pup sometimes too. They don't bark twice in the same place as they can usually move a track with good speed hot or cold.
I'm like you, this new stuff makes me scratch my head and go hummm! Dogs that can't run a cold track and make empty trees don't spend much time here.
I just passed on breeding Crockett's daughter, not going to breed her just to make pups and finding the right stud that doesn't produce bad traits or come from blood I don't like is TOUGH! I have a dog picked out to breed to her but he isn't being offered at stud yet. He's from this same stock and a cross we made.
There are a couple of other studs that I was considering, Yadkin River Bruiser, Skuna River Bear, TJ's Stylish Lipper, and a few more. But I don't know enough about any of them to give you good advice on breeding your female.
If Crockett or I can help in any way just give me a call.
I'm still breeding Crockett for a pup, he's covering females well and will be 10 years old in May. I have a waiting list for pups from him.

Thanks for the input and compliments Doug. I've thought long and hard on what to breed her to and I kept coming back to Crockett. I was thinking of skuna river bear also or skuna river fredman but I really wanna get some more cord blood with that tell sackett influence, you just can't run out and pick that stuff up. If it's ok with you then I'll be making the trip to your house as soon as she comes in. I'll try to get a few pics on here and let you see her looks and i've got a few videos too. Thanks again Doug.
Just let me know when she starts to come in and thanks for considering Crockett.
Looking forward to seeing the pictures of her!

Very Nice.

Diamond X Crockett pups are here.
Didn't have a big litter, 5 living and one of those is pretty weak so I won't have enough for everyone that wanted them.
She did have a couple grey pups, haven't had any of those in a while.
I'll get some pics in a few days.

good deal doug....good luck with them
You know there was a thread on the walker board about grey pups/dogs....I thought maybe it was an old finley river color trait, but I am starting to change my mind on that and think it is from multiple line breedings. I saw it on a pedigree of a dog that had grey pigment in its black and when I looked at the papers. there was a single dog that showed up three times in 4 generations.
Not sure what that means, but I am going to keep my eye on that. since I like a pretty redheaded blanket backed dog, i want to watch that in my bloodline. I have a couple of guys who have done that here close to me with no greys showing up yet, just something that makes me curious. I am sure there are some dna genetic experts out there that could help us on this.
I do know that I like the Cord liine you have. It is showing up that cord was an extra nice reproducer and didnt get the credit he deserves. I have talked to several guys over the past year that either bought or own cord dogs or knows one in their area and they had nothing but great things to say about them. they said they have lots of grit and drive.
put us some pics on here when they get a little older.
anybody wanting sackett jr blood would sure like to have one of these.

Those grey pups are pretty common with the old Yadkin River blood. I've also had few that where heavy House blooded. Some folks think it comes from the Hershburger blood so there's a common link to many bloodlines of today.
Jim Meeks told me years ago that the local guys would snatch those grey pups up and they all made coondogs.
My personal opinion about Cord is I think he possibly threw better pups than his sire Son, but Son threw better looking dogs.
Of course, neither reproduced like Jr. Most of the Cord dogs have a lot of drive and Crockett usually throws that in his pups too.
The Litter that Son came from where all early starting natural coondogs. Bob Miller had a brother, Mad River Rowdy, that was never bred and never in a nite hunt. I started him and hunted with him his whole life. He might have been a better dog than Son. He was louder and had a little more color. Greg Shopes female, Dusty, was a top female and a reproducer.
This was my female from that cross, Gr Ch Johnson Branch Breeze,

Rick, she was bred to Hard Knocking Hayes and produced a nice litter. I lost some conformation on that cross but gained a little harder going dog, which is what I was after.
I started several of them, very natural and early starters, outstanding track speed, good noses and all were tree dogs.
The female that I kept back didn't make my cut, her front feet turned out a little. Several were titled but never bred much.
Dual Grand Lucky, owned by my friend Steve Finder in Wisconsin, made a nice dog and has reproduced. I have a female here that's out of him and I'm partners on another in W.Va with Kevin Hissam, he's running her on bear. Lucky has produced some nice bear and coon dogs. The female I have is a complete natural, good tree dog with plenty of grit, but she has a very common mouth and a little loose footed. They are out of a female that is a 3/4 sister to Crockett, out of Cord and a Tell female.
My daughter and Son-in-law had one from Hayes and Breeze also, Johnson Branch Snipper (Snipe), they just buried him this winter. We tried to breed him twice but he was sterile.
He was super quick on both ends, had a good hound mouth and an outstanding tree dog.
Breeze and my Son's Tree Blaster female were lost in a cave/sinkhole 5 weeks after that litter was born.
First night out after weening those pups. She was 3 years old and had 3 wins toward Nt Ch. Bob's Rowdy died shortly after that and Greg's female Dusty was stolen out of his yard.
Son was the only one that lived very long.
Thanks for the complements on her! She was top of the line in my opinion and every day I wish I had her back.

I bet you do.
Man I just sit and look at that pic of her. That is the breed standard that I try to breed for. You and I have a lot in common breeding wise. I try and breed for a good looking, athletic, smart hound. If I have those three elements, I can train that dog.
It doesnt matter if its parents are all grand,or the momma and daddy are world champions. If I have those three traits in a hound, they are worth my time.
I have produced grand champion hounds from every cross I have ever made and they have all been good solid coonhounds. Non have been perfect, but I sure enjoyed raising them, hunting them and having them as my buddies.
I have never had to drag a single pup from a cross I have made through the woods for months on end trying to get them to tree a coon or ever had to beat them unconscience to get my point across. I can barely ever remember switching one.
They want to please me so much, just a stern voice is usually all I need.
I really respect your breeding practices and I can tell you have truly tried to help our breed.
Being honest with yourself about your hounds is where most coonhunters and especially breeders miss the mark. You have always been honestly critical of your own dogs and not so much of others. You have been truthful speaking when telling faults and also positive traits of your hounds and others.
I am the worst critic myself of my own hounds. I have always made it clear that I am breeding for a dual purpose world champion. I still believe it is possible to have a world show hound and a world champion coondog in one hide. I think it is the ultimate goal and I wont stop till I accomplish it. I am getting closer with each cross I make. It is a hard thing to do for sure.
You are close as anyone from what I can tell.
Good luck and I am sure one day our bloodlines will cross.

cripple creek, thanks much for your comments!!!
Here's a couple pics of one of the gray pups.
You can see the head of the other one in the first pic, but it's more open spotted.
I'm down to 4 pups out of Diamond, 2 males, 2 females, one of each color. They are healthy and strong. I truly believe that Diamond did my culling for me with this bunch. The jury's still out on the gray ones though.
