Dustin

Where have you been. That picture of your truck has load on it. How big are those cats.

Dustin

I have always always said there was something about Black Jack I was just drawn to his picture even before you talked about him. Could you please post some pics of Black Jack?

As always your pictures are Fantastic! That upcoming cross looks great and what pedigree generator do you use?

And one last question. Do you think the big game qualities of your Lightfoot hounds would benefit or take away from running coon? We have the snow, the big timber, deep ravines and I know your line has to be the type with lots of drive and intelligence and good noses.

Oh yeah one more thing Dustin. I think you know I have that writeup on the History of the Lightfoot hounds, is there a lot of truth to that or is it one sided based on the auther , LOL if you know what I mean. Didnt mean to steal your post but I would post it if you want I could email it to you first, thanks and sorry for so many questions!

Terry that’s Brian’s big rig. That last cat they got is pretty much as big as they get.

Doug, I’ll go down the list and answer the questions as best I can.

As you know, I pride myself on getting good pictures of the dogs. Some dogs are just photogenic and always easy to get a good picture of, while others make you work at it a lot harder. Black Jack was one of those dogs that made it easy.

I did not use a pedigree generator on the pedigree. I have typed out several of our pedigrees in the past and have them saved on my computer. Now when I need to make a new one I can just copy and paste from previous pedigrees I have typed out, then fill in the blanks. It’s a little bit tricky getting the spacing all correct so it appears right when you post it. But I know most of the pedigrees by memory, so it’s easy to look at the finished product to make sure it’s right.

As too how I feel our hounds would perform being coon hunted. I will start by saying that my coon hunting experience is very limited. I know there are others who have hunted these hounds on coon who could answer that question based on more first hand experience. But here is my take on the subject.

It would absolutely depend on the type of hound that a person wanted to coon hunt. If you were looking for a hound that left at a dead run and got deep quick, didn’t waste time fooling with tracks that required too much cold trailing, didn’t bark much or any on the ground, and was always looking to get away from the other dogs and be off by themselves, then NO, these hounds would not be what a person wanted. I’m not saying anything bad about anyone’s style of hound, it’s just that that type of hound isn’t what we need for the type of hunting we do.

Now on the other hand, if you were looking for a hound that hunted the area out more thoroughly looking for whatever age of track they could find, opened some on the coldest tracks they could run, and opened more as they heated the track up. A hound with enough independence to stay with their own track regardless of what’s going on around them, but will also pack in with another hound if it gets a track going first and they don’t have one. Then yes, I think people would be happy with one of our hounds.

These hounds seem to adapt well to whatever terrain and conditions they are hunted in, and hold up physically to hard hunting. I have no idea how they would do on the score card, as I have never been in a nite hunt. But if you wanted a hound that would go hunting and tree game in any conditions, and was a pleasure to look at and listen too, then I think these hounds would suit many hunters.

I have plans to get a few more of our pups in the hands of coon hunters, yourself included. We just need to get some pups on the ground. Brian and I made two crosses this winter. The first one didn’t take and we’re waiting to see if the second one did or not.

That picture was taken back when I still had a 35mm film camera. Does that make me old. LOL. Black Jack was about a year and a half.

Thanks Dustin

I dont know what it is but I have always liked Black Jack just looking at him I get the feeling he was like my Bluspeck hound, intelligent, eager to please, almost a regal nature but just a bonding loyal type dog.. I would be really tickled to get a blue female that is line bred on Black Jack. I will just be patient and we wil see what happens.

Thanks so much for the info you PM me, now you really have me wondering about what Bill told you I sure would like to run that by people and see if others had heard that too.

What you have described is exactly what I like. You have described my Bluspeck hound. Hunts an area out good, checks in if nothing moving, independent but will pack if he hasnt got anything going, independent enough to split and hold pressure, gets deep at times. Sometimes a little too cold nosed, wont quit. Sounds like the Lightfoot hounds would fit in nicely in these hills and big woods!

Dustin we will have to talk sometime. I know we are worlds apart as far as the type of game we pursue but I bet the dogs are not!
Thanks ever so much for answering my questions!

That was before GPS collars. It was just to help tell where the dog was if he wasn't barking. You can here those little bells a couple hundred yards away sometimes.

We got a new pup the other day to raise up and hunt, with the hopes of possibly using her as an outcross in our breeding program some day. I want to thank Michael Parker for the beautiful pup, and Robby Anderson for his help in taking her to the airport and getting her shipped. So far I’m very pleased with her. She looks and acts really good.

Thanks everyone

She's Tapp, Flower's, Woodstock. I don't have a big pedigree on her yet. But she has a lot of blood that I've been wanting to try.

Jammin' Jude
Rapper
2 X Wildfire
2 X Red Bud 75
Hardtime Cody
Dancing Judy
Ice Man

Michael has hunted with a bunch of these dogs over the years and has given me a lot of valuable information about them. I've been looking for a while for something out of the right stuff that I wanted to try. Michael has owned several of the dogs in this pup's pedigree and has hunted with a bunch of the others. It's always a gamble when you decide to try something different, but I'm confident that Michael has given me a good honest evaluation of what I can expect out of these dogs, and that's all a guy can ask for. Now we'll see if we can get her to trash out on bears and cats. LOL

He's not quite a year old yet, but he's growing up nicely. What a difference between training one of these dogs and the hounds. He makes me think I'm an an expert dog trainer because he listens and follows commands so well. Then my hounds remind me that I'm no super dog trainer, it's just that high dollar bird dog that's making me look good. LOL

I bought some homing pigeons to use to train him with. Now I'm a pigeon breeder too. I have the nicest pigeon coop in town. LOL
