If you take plenty of snacks, the trigger man is ready. Luke hadn't been out for two weeks. He got away from the sisters on a couple deals and treed a coon. Like 3/4 mile deep and lonely. He's pretty quiet on the ground and does his own thing. For 15 months old he's very accurate.

Richard Bebee was over for a hunt. He brought his gyp (sue x Rattler) I had Luke & Fancy. It was very foggy with occasional rain. Tracking was terrible or we need better track dogs. We did tree two trees with coon. If we had been selling the pack for $100 we would have still owned them. The one tree we made that the hounds treed right on was slick the best we could tell. It was difficult to tell if you were seeing the top of the trees.

Tim Stone was up for a hunt. We took the 4 siblings. Had a good hunt at 50 degrees. Treed 8 trees with coon and was headed home at 10:15. Had a couple trees where only one dog split off and had one. May have treed the smallest tree I had ever treed a coon in. Mr Turnbow did you get the video of the small tree?

Well Combs showed up and we turnt the hounds loose a few times. Ran a little speed beef and possibly a coyote. Hounds treed 10 ft from a den tree that we saw a coon in. They had a slick tree. Treed anouther slick tree. Treed one tree that they left. Went through 6 or 8 sections. Worst hunt I've had in awhile. Great reason to stay home until we get a warm up.

Bebee an I went for a hunt last night. Richard had his young gyp out of Rattler x Sue. I took Irene & Luke. We were mainly hunting Luke & Sue. First dump they went a half mile to strike. Put one under an old grain ben. Then ran a good track in some pits. The honey suckel is thick in this area. A hound gets A work out running a coon in it. Ended in a doser pile. The coon was pushed out while we were catching dogs and they treed it. Next deal we sent the young hounds north & Irene south. Irene struck 200 yds in. The young hounds started to her. When Luke got to where Irene had struck, he went the opposite direction 150 yds and treed. Luke had a big boar. Irene & Sue was treed at 650 yds. They had a big boar. Last dump Luke & Sue went 3/4 mile and treed a litter.

Haven't posted for awhile. Hunted Luke alone a few nights ago. He doesn't get deep alone like he does with company. Four to six hundred yards seems to be his game plan. He did tree a couple trees with coon. Last night I hunted with Jerry and his walker dogs. We had a couple dirt holes, a den tree & Luke treed a couple trees with coon. Tim was up tonight with his two gyps. We hunted the four litter mates. Tim's gyps treed the first coon. My two looked good on the me too. We sent them on. My two ran speed beef a half mile where Luke fell off and treed a den tree. Next deal Fancy treed a dirt hole. We squalled the coon out where they ran it 100 yds and treed a big sprawled out hedge, no coon seen. Must of crossed out on the young dogs. Next dump slammed one at 280 yds. Last dump they went .65 and got treed on a big boar. We both got wet getting to the dogs and called it a night.

Matt Merrill was up for a hunt. We took Luke & Moe. Matt had bought Moe from Steve a while back. On the first & second turn outs we didn't get struck. Third drop they went .6 and it sounded like they had one in the creek. As we were walking they sounded treed. Coon must of whipped butt and got up a tree. Either way the coon was wet and it come out. Next drop they went a half mile and come back. Then they treed a quick coon 30 yds off the road. Then a hole under some big concrete slabs. We sent on where they went a mile and didnt strike. Next drop they fell treed at 350 yds. with a coon. Next drop they struck at 350 yds & treed a coon at 650 in short order. Last drop they struck around 400 yds & treed a coon at 550 again in short order. We headed in at 11. Had a good hunt with two young hounds on a moonlight January night.

We took the grandson bird hunting last Saturday. I was hurting too much to coon hunt Sunday night from walking the CRP grass all day Saturday. After the revival service at church Sunday I had planned on hunting but the recliner held me down. Tim and I hunted the young dogs Monday night. Late January, moonlight & 23 degrees is not a Bluebird night when it comes to treeing coon. We did manage to tree three trees with coon. Matt Merrill was up last night. It was a little warmer. Treed two trees with coon. We ended the night in a big catail swamp. Knee deep water and Mr coon didn't want to leave. It was difficult getting our hands on Luke & Moe. You couldn't see the hounds two feet from you because of the 8 ft tall catails.

Had a nice hunt by myself tonight. I sent Luke by himself and Fancy by herself. First turn Luke went in 130 yds and treed one. Didn't take 2 minutes. Fancy went 470 yds and come back. Luke went in 110 yds and worked a track back to the road. Crossed the road and worked 175 yds and treed a coon. Fancy went in 650 yds, messed around in a 75 yd area for 20 minutes and returned. Luke went in 375 yds and treed. He doesn't mis very often but it was slick. Sent Luke on the last turn out. He went in just over 100 yds worked back to me crossed the road, went 60 yds and treed a coon. All 3 coon that Luke treed were low in the tree, first or second fork. I would say they had been in the tree for awhile. Luke doesn't open on cold tracks but he does tree coon. A good percentage close to me and I like that.

I noticed Irene coming into heat yesterday. The reason I purchased Irene three years ago was to breed her to Rebel. Progesterone test next week and hopefully the cross finally made. We made a cross 18 months ago on irenes' sister Daisy. The young hounds from that cross are nice.

Jim Combs, Roy Clifton & I went to the Zone 1 Business Meeting yesterday in Marshall Mo. The meeting went good, added a couple zone hunts, a little discussion on awards & prizes for the hog roast hunt. A discussion on joining with BBCHA was peaceful but no solution or ideas to make it happen. Personally, I doubt it ever will happen but gives members something to think about. Jim & I got back to my place around 9. Tim Stone was setting in the driveway ready to go hunting. I slipped my duds on and we were off. We had the four siblings that we have been treeing coon with. First deal they went .6 and treed a big boar. Then they made a 3/4 mile loop and didn't strike. We just sent them the opposite direction. Luke got to himself and put one in a hole. Fancy had went right handed 500 yds and treed a coon. Tim's gyps worked a track to an area where I normally get in beaver holes. They all went to Fancy' s tree. Next deal they went in 600 yds where Fancy went west on the creek the others went east. They were 600 yds apart when fancy treed her second coon. We moved where Luke got to himself and treed a coon. The gyps were a mile from him and Tim's Sadie gyp got treed first on a coon. We quit about midnight but should of hunted later, coon were moving. Cold and snow when i walked out of Church today.

Tim Stone was up for a hunt. Like always, we took the 4 litter mates. First deal they had went .8 miles through a section so we drove around to gather them. The 3 gyps come through but Luke was messing around near a pond. He ended up in a beaver hole fighting a coon. Next drop they struck and got treed quick at 170 yds on a coon. Next deal they went in 600 yds and circled around back to us. Next deal .57 and got treed on a big oak den tree. Next deal Tim's two gyps had went deep. They were treed when we got around to them. Luke and Fancy come in late. Sure treed right but no coon. We sent them on where all but Fancy went 600 yds on through the section. Fancy treed 250 yds off the road. It was slick. Not a good night for the blue crew. A cold windy night with game not moving all that good. We still enjoyed a night of hunting and seeing these young hounds improve.

Mr Bebee was over for a hunt. Richard brought his female out of his Old Sue female & Mailes Rattler. I took Luke & Fancy. First drop Sue & Luke put one in a culvert but we couldn't see in it very good. Fancy moved her track 600 yds to a beaver den. Next turn Luke & Fancy went 1.25 miles where Luke got treed with a coon. The females covered him pretty quick. Next drop they searched an area out in the middle of a section and ended up going through the section. Last drop the females worked an area 200 yds from us, Luke went 700 yds and returned. We loaded the hounds and headed in. One coon treed isn't all that good but I absolutely can't stand getting skunked.

Posted by blueticker on 02-09-2018 06:28 AM:

I really enjoy hunting a hound alone but most folks that come have a hound or two and I take a couple. When I hunt alone I enjoy taking two hounds and alternate turning them loose. If I ever get a chance to turn one loose alone at a nt hunt, they will get gone and under a coon. If not, they wont be at a hunt with me. I do get more alone time in the spring and summer. The reason I hunt is to enjoy the hounds. Pleasure hunting is what coon hunting is about for me. Competition Hunts don't mean much to me any more. I will finish one to grand night if I plan on keeping them.

Tonight Matt Merrill was over and we had a small pack, Moe & Luke. First drop over 1.5 miles before getting after one & treed it. Next drop through a section to gather Luke. Moe had got right handed 200 yds and treed. Didn't see a coon. He was right next to thin ice and probaly didn't cross where the coon did. Next drop 600 yds and got treed with a coon. Next drop 250 with a coon. Last drop 500 yds with a coon. Luke will be 17 months Saturday and Moe 19 months. Both are pretty nice young hounds. I'm looking forward to hunting Luke in the corn this summer, he is a track dog that you can tree when he locates. Take the gun he'll have a coon.

A trip to Batesville for the BBCHA spring meeting took Friday & Saturday. Sunday night we were iced in. Tim was over tonight. We went back to pack hunting the siblings. First deal they went over 3/4 and treed a double. Next deal they went in 350 and struck a good track. Luke left camp in a hurry. The gyps were opening good but Luke was opening every 100 yds and was 300 yds ahead when he caught the coon. The sisters can't run with big brother. I haven't had a young hound that can run a track like Luke in a long time. Next drop all four ran a good track in heavy cover for 6 hundred yds and put it in. Then they went a half mile and got treed in a doser pile. While we were getting them out they caught the coon. Last turn out they struck a good track but it went 100 yds to a beaver den. Tracking seemed to be much better than it has been.

Hunted with Jerry last night. First deal Rambled and Luke struck quick and treed at 250 yds. The coon would have fell on ice so we left it. The ice may not of held the dogs. I told Jerry I didn't w as my to hunt big water with ice. Next drop jerry's walker gyp, Remi treed a coon. I had sent John with her and he went deeper but never treed. Luke and Rambler got treed at 650 with a coon. I sent Luke with Remi, they went 720 yds and treed a big coon. Rambler & Luke struck over a half mile on a cold track. They treed a large pecan tree no coon. We sent on where they struck almost through the section. We drove around, Luke had a den tree & Rambler was fighting a coon in a pond. I sent Luke a few times after Jerry went home. Luke treed one coon & one in a shallow hole. He got it out before I could handle him.

Matt was over with Moe, I took Luke. First two drops coon must not have been moving. They went over a mile on each through good timber. They struck at 150 yds and put one in a doser pile. They went on and treed a coon around 600 yds in. The next drop just over 500 yds they fell treed with a coon. We sent down a hedge row to get the hounds to a good patch of timber at 600 yds. They only had to go 370 to tree a coon. Next drop they went right at a mile, ran a short track and treed a coon. Nothing on the next drop. Moe fell treed at 402 yds with Luke covering on the next deal. Moe treed a coon 150 yds and Luke took one 490 to a hole on the next deal. We ended the night on a good note. Both hounds messed around for a couple minutes in a 30 yd area and treed. The coon must of been up for awhile. No slick trees, no junk and we headed in at 11:20. Sure enjoy watching young hounds tree coon.

Tim was up for the last night of season. Fancy was in heat so we just had 3 siblings. First dump 75 yds treed a big boar. Raining and hard to find bit Tim spotted him. We sent on where they went a mile and didn't get any thing treed. Next drop struck at 250, worked a few hundred yds on a big creek and treed a coon. Next drop went in 550 yds and fell treed with a coon. Next drop about the same and Kate shined. Last drop struck at 350 treed a coon at 570. Tim let me know that we had treed around 70 coon with the 4 siblings.

I went to Oklahoma to hunt with Tim last night in the hills. First drop over a mile and no strike. Next drop they struck quick and Tim's Chief dog treed quick with a coon. Next drop Chief & Kate treed at 600 yds on a tree leaning on a rock bluff. Luke was 400 yds treed on a den tree on top of the bluff. Getting to him was not like 400 yards across a cut bean field. Next drop Chief & Kate gets treed on a den tree and Luke trees a coon .8 miles away. They go over a half mile on the next drop to a road. Last drop Luke & Kate trees on a slick tree. Chief goes on 100 yds and trees on a den. It's good to hunt different terrain but a few hills and a bluff climb wasn't all that fun.

Terrain

Dennis you used to out walk anyone around here in these hills and hollers. Sounds to me flat land has gotten you soft. Or is it the age? Just kidding

Chad, anyone that tells you they are as tough at 60 as they were at 30 can't be trusted. Joe and I would hunt from the south pull in on high school farm road to his house. Thats 3 or 4 miles straight through. Ben & Echo always added a little weight to our game pouch. Joe was the best hunting partner a man could have. Tough as they come. I can remember one night we had just got started good when it started to snow. We did tree a few coon but had a few inches of snow on when we got to his house. We never ran into any other hunters in those woods. We did hear ol Twist treed in there a few times.
