10-4 thanks doc. Yes he did give me prednisone also. When I asked him what he thought would bring this on he said there was no way to tell.

It's usually insect bite like Flea Bite or environmental allergies.

Doc we have a dog with skin issues too and vet gave him a shot then prednisone twice a day and he was clearing up good but went to peeing in the house so we had to stop the pills...any other things that might work without the side effects? And how do you want us to go about ordering the tick meds?

There are two newer allergy medications that came out recently. Apoquel is a tablet that needs to be given twice daily orally for 14 days then every day after that. The other one is CADI injectable. There is a newer name for it now but one injection lasts for 30 days. It targets the receptors responsible for the inflammation of allergies. You can also try Temaril P . That is an anti histamine combined with a very small amount of Prednisone for skin allergies. You also need to make sure you are treating any underlying infections of the skin called Pyoderma. It can be from a yeast or bacteria or a mix of both. A good surface shampoo that has both chlorhexidine and ketoconazole really helps to clear these up fast. Check Amazon for a combination of these two in shampoos and mousse applicators.

Make sure your flea control program is good. Simparica is the best. PM me if you need some.

Hello Dr.hallada i have a question on lymes my son has a dog that was diagnosed in october with anaplasmosis and lymes local vet prescribed doxy 400 at 1 dose per day for 30 days i was told by someone that that was to low of dose should have been 2 per day for month.I think it is back swollen foot, joint in tail ,doesn't take off, lost weight same symptoms but not lack of appetite vet says they can't test him because it will show titter for lymes Thank you

I would ask your veterinarian these questions or get a second opinion from a highly rated veterinarian in your area. Sounds like this puppy is in a tough battle.

That's why I'm pounding on the table for everyone to protect their dogs from these diseases because they are destroyers of potential in our dogs.

I have heard the Lyme disease vaccine is not very effective. Your thoughts on protecting them?

It depends on the vaccine being used and the amount of exposure the dogs are getting. If I lived in an area with heavy Lyme Disease, I'd consider using it on my dogs. It's not 100% but when combined with a good tick prevention program, I think it is worthwhile.

The cheapest prevention is to use a Permethrin spray each time you cut those dogs loose. Cost under $1 a month to use the diluted farm spray for this purpose and you can treat your clothes with it as well.

You can still use topical products like Advantix or Frontline. Once the pups are born I'd stick with Frontline topical until the pups are weaned.

I have a client that gave two pregnant females Simparica through pregnancy with no effects on litter size or litter health. It's just not approved yet for pregnant females.

Get these dogs on both Simparica and Permethrin spray or Seresto Collars. That is the best prevention in my opnion. The spray is so inexpensive and works great if applied prior to turning the dogs loose.

Lyme disease, its causative tick-borne agent�Borrelia burgdorferi, and Ixodes ticks are all on the rise. In August 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) increased their estimate of the number of new human cases of Lyme disease from 30,000 to 300,000 annually.1

Tick removal and control is an important part of prevention of Lyme disease, but so is Lyme disease vaccination. No vaccine is completely without risk, but when weighing the risks versus the benefits, I believe the evidence strongly supports the following:

In endemic regions, Lyme disease negative dogs should be vaccinated. As part of a Lyme disease prevention protocol, dogs must be vaccinated in addition to tick removal and control. One infected tick that escapes those first 2 barriers can easily cause infection. There is no evidence of any deleterious effects due to vaccinating Lyme disease negative dogs.

In endemic regions, Lyme disease positive dogs with no clinical signs of disease should be vaccinated when risk of reinfection is high. There is no natural immunity due to previous infection, which likely results due to bacteria �hiding� themselves from the immune system, mainly in tissue, such as synovial membranes, and down-regulating immunogenic surface proteins.2 In a recent paper on infections in humans with recurrent signs, it appeared that humans can be re-infected over and over again, almost annually, causing severe clinical disease.3
In endemic regions, Lyme disease positive dogs with clinical signs should be vaccinated when risk of reinfection is high, and should receive antibiotic therapy, prior to or immediately following vaccination.
Lyme disease vaccination should be performed annually, with the currently available vaccines. In addition, tick control, even in vaccinated dogs, must be stressed to owners since very heavy exposure to Lyme disease may override vaccinal protection.

Best flea products right now are Nexgard or Bravecto. You might be able to get the larger sizes and split them to save some money. You can find cheaper flea and tick products but with added toxicity potential. Diluted permethrin sprays are one. Advantage does not work on ticks.

I'm not a fan of Seresto Collars. Too many side effects including seizures are being commonly reported. I just think they are too toxic and onset of activity is too slow.

Nothing, I just don't recommend them in small dogs. If you look on Amazon you will find about 1 dog on every page that has had some kind of reaction to the collar from lethargy to seizures. I've not had any issues with large dogs and Seresto. There is nothing new here in technology. This collar is a combination of Advantage with a Permethrin analog. Advantage is for fleas and Permethrin is for fleas/ticks. The collar releases these drugs slowly over a long period of time up to 8 months. It can take up to 2-3 days for the concentration to be effective for both flea and tick prevention.

I suspect the Permethrin analog is the issue in the smaller breed dogs, because Advantage (imidocloprid) is very safe.
You can see this same thing with Permethrin in small dogs if given too much at one time. Permethrin is rarely an issue in larger dogs unless really high concentrations are used.

Either way, Permethrin is a great tick preventative if used correctly. I think these collars are good for large breed dogs with very few side effects that are seen in smaller dogs.

Depends on the concentration of the permethrin you start with. Most of the farm sprays have dilution directions on them. This is a good one from Martin's and it's 10% Permethrin. End concentration for bedding and kennels should be .5% and for applying to dogs it should be .1%.

For dogs you would dilute it 1 part Martin's 10% Permethrin to 99 parts of water or 1 oz of 10% Permethrin to 99 oz of water to get a .1% solution. See how inexpensive this is? This is less than $1 a bottle of flea/tick spray. You can use this concentration on your clothes too prior to hunting.
