The camera vest setup is my partner Brian's. I think it actually came from overseas. We didn't get any good footage on this trip with it, but he has some good bear hunting footage from last fall.

Well this is the last hunts pictures from my trip up north. Once again I had a great time. Brian and I are really happy with the group of young dogs we have coming up. We held the older dogs back on a few of these hunts to see if the youngsters could get the job done, and we were very pleased with how they performed. Storm, Chrome, Fancy, Doc, and Clutch are all 2 1/2 yrs and under.

Once again we turned on a female and ended up with a kitten in the tree. Oh well, it sure made for some cool pictures.

If I thought I would work as bait, I'd tie myself to a tree, with a bunch of snares hung all around me. LOL.

We've been in the shop redesigning and building our own snares. It sounds pretty simple, but there's a lot more to it than I imagined. We've got them hitting our bait, now we just have to get enough stuff built to go set them out.

Venom's been in heat. I took Clutch & Chrome out the other day before we got 2+ feet of snow in the mountains. I found an old lion track with some snow in it a couple hours before dark. They cold trailed it for two hours. I walked in and cut them off just before dark and it still had a little snow in it. Hard telling how much further they would have to go to catch up with him, but with the direction they were heading, it was most likely gonna be in the dark and a lot farther from the road, so I pulled them off.

Ok Riverbottom Ron, here’s some more info for ya. Here’s a pedigree on a cross that Brian and I just made. As I’ve said in the past, one of the goals of our breeding program is to use our Black Jack and Blitz dogs as the foundation with which we based our pedigrees on, by double and tripling up on them in the crosses we make. The reason that we chose these hounds to base our program on is because both hounds were the type of hounds we like to hunt and they also had the ability to produce a bunch of good hounds that were also the type of hounds we want to hunt and own.

Blitz has produced several hounds that have themselves produced nice hounds when bred. That list would include Idaho Lightfoot Black Jack, Idaho Lightfoot Stifler, Idaho Lightfoot Rev, Idaho Lightfoot Gambler, Idaho Lightfoot Robin, Lightfoot Rose, Lightfoot Sho-Biz, and a few others that aren‘t in the public eye as much. Because Blitz was able to produce this many quality hounds, out of the only two litters she had, is what makes her a special female in our pedigrees. We will undoubtedly be using some of the other hounds out of Blitz in our program in the future, as we have nice young dogs out of Gambler and Robin right now. But in this particular pedigree we were able to accomplish our goal of tripling up on Black Jack and Blitz.

Luckily we had seen enough in Black Jack at a young age that we chose to breed him to three different females. Two of the females were line bred Lightfoot hounds and the other was a complete outcross. Before all of the pups from these litters were old enough to really see what we had, Brian had Black Jack get killed by a lion. Black Jack’s brother Rev went on to tree the lion that day and Brian got his revenge, but the fatal blow had been delivered. At the time it was a serious blow to Brian’s hunting pack and the loss of a stud dog in our breeding program that certainly appeared like he was going to produce some nice hounds. What we would learn over the next couple of hunting seasons while hunting young dogs from all three litters out of Black Jack, is that we not only lost a very good hound, but a stud dog who had produced a very high percentage of super nice hounds out of all three litters he sired. While we will always wonder how our program would be different if Black Jack had lived to sire a few more litters. We are very thankful for the top notch females that we have out of him and how well they themselves have produced. This upcoming cross will carry Black Jack and Blitz three times through three different females. Two of them are littermate sisters (Idaho Lightfoot Sandy & Idaho Lightfoot Stinger), and the third is Idaho Lightfoot No Mercy who is like a 7/8 sister to them as you will see if you study the pedigree close enough.

With these hounds as the foundation we have built on, and the other nice hounds which have complimented the success of our program, like Idaho Lightfoot Whiplash, Idaho Lightfoot Coby, Gibson’s Sunset Luke, and on down the list. We feel like we have laid the groundwork for a program that will continue to give us quality hounds to hunt for years to come. None of these hounds past or present were or are perfect, and we are continually looking for ways to improve the hounds we hunt. But they have given us endless hours of enjoyable and productive hunts, and in our opinion that’s what it’s all about. Of course much of the success of these crosses goes to all the hunters who have hunted these hounds past, present, and in the future. These hunters make it possible to more accurately evaluate each cross that is made and helps to determine what direction we should go in the future.

Not yet. I finally got some of our new snares set out. Still have more to do. I think we've learned a little more about what we are doing, but I guess we will have to see if the changes to our equipment and techniques will get it done.

Brian sent me some pictures taken off the video his wife took of the bay up we had early in the season. They had treed the lion twice and when we would get close to the tree it would jump out. But the second time it jumped out it decided to stop and fight instead of run. This was right before Venom got caught and the sh*t hit the fan. At this point the lion was 100% healthy and no shots had been fired yet.

Work has been interfering with hunting, but my partner had his nonresident hunt to do so it was a great hunt. He found the track late friday. Saturday was a long day moving the track 12 miles as the crow flies on a gps. Sunday we were ready to go, rode around the block the tom was in and no tracks out. Collared up and started the dogs on the track from the day before when he went into the block. It was a short cold trail and jumped the lion. What a surprize at the tree! He was even better than expected. This is the first lion we have weighed that was over 200 lbs. He weighed 201. His skull green scores over 16". Its very exciting wait to see where the official score ends up.
