I hunt with two Garmins and the one attached to the truck antenna was set for the map to show me Frito working his track over a mile away in the timber, and the other unit was set to watch Tucker. After about 10 minutes of this interesting experience, I heard Tucker's locate cut through the wind, where it reached me inside the closed cab of my Jeep.

I rolled out of the vehicle and walked over to Tucker where he had a double in a big oak. Aftering telling Tucker he had his coon, I noticed before getting back to my vehicle that I could now hear Frito over the wind. A quick check of the Garmin showed he had pushed the old coon out of the thick stuff, and had him running along the south bank of the lake, headed my way.

About the time I got back to my vehicle, I could hear Frito plainly and his voice had turned over to a long chop (sounds like whop-umph, whop-umph) which told me he caught the sucker. It took me a good 20 minutes to pick my way around the soft spots in the ice to reach Frito with his coon. I was real uneasy standing out on the ice after a few days of thawing temperatures had turned the top to slush. Neither dog nor coon was winning. Everytime Frito would get him by the neck the big coon would twist his way out of the dog's jaws. So as soon as Frito backed up to ready for his next charge I fired a hollowpoint into the coon, ending the struggle.

Talk about a wet, cold, tired dog. Frito carried the coon all the way back across the ice and deposited him on shore. I could tell by the hunched back he was hurting. So I loaded him and took him home. Frito's got this look he'll give you on the ride home after a really challenging hunt where he gave you his best. He doesn't curl up and go to sleep. He sits and looks at you. Maybe he appreciates me for my part as much as I appreciate him for his part in this challenging hunt? Glancing at him over my shoulder while driving home, and seeing him sitting there and looking at me, it makes you wonder if there's more to all this than I realize.

We're living and making memories... one coon hunting adventure at a time.

The way you write it out makes me feel like I'm right there watching it all happen. You need to write a book, Hell with Wick your Good!!!

well ol copper top redeemed himself tonight . 1.3 miles as the crow flies from cut loose to tie up with two jumboes looking down. traveled 3.66 miles up and down hollers up over ridges , and down to the river were he come treed in there. traveling speed averaged at 5.68mph according to garmin.cut him loose at 12:45 he treed at about1:25. this sucker will flat fly through the country looking for ricky.. frost was comming down heavy and he never found a track till he got down to the river. river has bad ice and i was worried when he got down there

I didn't realize how cold it was tonight until I pressed the Zepps against my lips and felt it start to freeze to them. It was 10 degrees tonight, and after a few weeks of seasonal cold, the frost had already sunk about a foot into the ground. This didn't matter to Frito. He was treed over a mile from where I sent him into the woods and sitting under another coon.

Have you ever hunted a dog you felt you could almost set your clock by when you let him go?

It's like he has this predictable hunting rhythm and timing and each phase of the hunt almost always takes about the same amount of time each time he does it, and no part ever takes so long that your mind ever wanders or you've ever wished you were somewhere else, doing something else? On the surface it sounds like it could be monotonous. But man it's not!

Friday night, Charlie hunted along a bluff above the river and the first sound I heard out of him was four long locates. I've seen him do this a couple times before. I'm a bit of a skeptic about labeling anything a true layup but either way he did another nice job. I've been told his mama (Sloopy) was a top layup dog. Maybe I'll get to see this myself someday.

My picture taking is probably done for the year in this climate. Saturday night it was ten degrees and the camera died after only two photos shot. One's bare fingers don't work well in such temps anyway so I guess it doesn't matter if the camera fails.

ya rick it sure did get cold . jesse and i hunted till about 4 and it got down to 6 degrees here.

Sounds as tho Lil Copper is a Coon gettin machine no matter what the weather. Copper should be called Fedex cause he doesn't it in any type of weather!!!

the supa freak

cut ol copper loose at midnite last nite. 12 deg. , wind blowing 20 mph with 30mph gusts. it was cold and nasty. good thing is we dont have any snow..that bugger blasts up this holler that is aqbout a mile long . he breaks out of the top end of it got on the road for about a 1/4 and droped dow another holler back toward the river he poked out of the side of that hollerback over to the first one . he swung back up it a couple hundred yds or so . he seamed to realize he had already coverede this and swung back up out of there. he worked the ridges some and then headed for the river and i was trying to cut him off cause the river is very treacherous whith alot of open places in the ice.i was unable to cut him off. i think i need to work on his obediance skills some. lol. forgot to put on tri tronics. any way he got down to the river and run about a mile or more and opened 4 time then boom treed.plus him up
..according to garmin he traveled 6.49mileswith an average travel speed of 7.89 mph. never opened one time that i heard until he found thosedown on the river. inever would have thought he would have found one in those conditions . and should have went home . i was thinking i was a fool when i couldn't get him cought, and he headed for the river . but he showed me alot last night.. ( SUPA FREAK)

Winter Hunting in ND

A break in the weather and decided to go hunting last night. I've been working on Tucker to get him lined out so that he heads through the country away from me and it appears to be working. He has the legs and speed for it and just needed a little extra help to pull it together. Tucker is generally the least vocal of the bunch and it would be nice if he'd open a little more because he has a real nice all-bawl horn-like trail mouth. Last night I struck and treed him on his first locate. Seems like we get a lot of layup like coons with this batch of pups. He's also finding he can hammer out a double chop after settling at the tree. But mostly he likes to lean into the tree, hold his mouth wide open and throw long wailing bawls each finished with a single chop.

Boone was off somewhere in the woods and showed up at the tree after I got there. This little guy turned 5 months a couple days ago and there is no way you dare let him out of the box without a tracking collar. He doesn't even need company and already goes 6-8 hundred yards into the timber. Before last night, he had no idea what a coon was yet so I decided to roll this one out and see what happened. He tore it up like he'd done it before. Maybe he'll be running and treeing at 6 months???? Boone has Frito's brains and personality and is real special to me. Frito's winter home and my base camp

Got our new place opened this past week at Hartville. The builder did a nice job and its functonal for my wife, me and the dogs. A couple of my new neighbors have been by and liked it too. Takes em about a second to figure out my passion for coon hunting.

Probably not but lots of country to hunt and a couple nights I walked the hills in short sleeves. Lots of vertical relief to the terrain which I don't mind and an open understory and no swamps a plus.

Frito really likes it and hit the ground running and has had no problems figuring out how to find coons quickly. I believe MO is the 9th state I've put him in to hunt and he has had no problems adapting to any new ground whatsoever.

Frito under his first Ozark coon

I think it was Tuesday last week and I'd had enough getting the place opened and ready. So I downloaded a Mark Twain forest map and opened up Google Earth and laid a battle plan on paper for a quick assult on the coons. I had no idea what I was getting into. Drove to the woods after dark and pulled up at the spot I earlier picked to drop Frito. Got him out and walked him 50 feet into the woods. Looked around and thought my word those are pine trees all over this ridge. I noticed them on the aerials but it didn't dawn on me I end up hunting them. Oh well, we've come this far, lets see if there's a coon here.

So I cut Frito lose and he was flat gone through the pines in a second. Apparently, he felt more confident than I was at the moment. Pulled out the Garmin and watched Frito cut straight across the ridge and drop down into a big, long holler and then he quickly worked his way along Flannery Branch for a couple hundred yards.

Now only maybe 7 minutes had passed and I heard him open good and strong and he drove his track back up the ridge in my roughly general direction. Maybe it was a diller or a possum he was chasing? I didn't know what to think. Treed! I said quickly as I was trying to work everything through in my mind as fast as everything was happening. Then I hoofed it in there to see what I had to deal with and he had a coon. Man was I excited. I had my gun but the last thing I felt like doing was knocking out his first Ozark coon.

Went home feeling good and laid some more plans for hitting spots in the forest. I pushed him hard the next time we went to the woods and he did his part showing me coons in these hills. He treed a couple singles hot and close in succession in one spot, and then I sent him off the last hot tree and he cold trailed out of there and treed one deep. I was real happy.
