Hunters discriminated against again

Let me first start at the beginning, the Illinois State Coonhunters Association each year gives away scholarships to graduating seniors in the state of Illinios, this year we awarded 9 $250 scholarships to kids. This is were it gets bad, we like to have an officer or director attend the schools awards ceremony to hand out the scholarship so the child gets some recognition like all the other kids that are recieving scholarships, well the Pontiac school superindendent calls the Sec/Treas, who was going to present the scholarship, Monday and tells him that he can't present the award at the ceremony because , now get this, he finds the name of our organization offensive and racially slurred. I am trying to get the names of the local papers in Pontiac to write to the editor and am going to call the school office tomorrow and talk to the sup. himself if he will accept my calls??? Is anyone from that area on the board that can help out getting some names and numbers or is anyone else interested in writing to the editor and voicing our opinion? These people are supposed to be educators aren't they. Maybe you should get pics with the kid and run an article in the paper about the scholarships that are given out and how the school system doesn't seem to want them.

Thank your civil librity lawyers and organizations for all that . That superintendent is possilby following the school district legal proto- call. the education system in this country is in a shamble state due to the 1960 mentality of most school administation.

Heres what you are looking at; A. a misguided tree hugger anti hunter or , B. a school administater with tail feathers afraid of law suits, which by the way has already budgeted a retainer to a legal firm on each fiscal term for any such occasions.

Either way get rid of his ass, the children should be the his first priority .as hard pressed as scholarship $ are these days .

i was the person to give the scholarship and i even called our state reps in the district and they went to bat for the kid and us and in the last 2 years the illinois state coonhunters has given out 16 scholarships totally from raffle sales . i am the sec treas. for our state ass. so i know the numbers thanks for your support this matter is far from over i did give the gentleman his scholarship in front of the school and his parents were hoping to let us present at has awards night tonight so about punctuation just letting words flow.

sad-sad state of affairs, spent many yrs. in education, as teacher-coach, public school adm. and teaching in college... kinda makes me ashamed of my profession which has always been an avocation as well as a vocation... political correctness has often obiltered common sense and is in fact just the thing it was intended not to be... fear of doing the wrong thing poltically has often precluded doing the right thing... if it were a personal decision by the superintendent, just an indicator good-not so good, smart-stupid in all walks of life... too bad a student suffers as the result of adult behavior, many forget school is for students-manifest function, and all else is simply a latent function, it were not for kids would be no schools, teachers, and administrators..

Thanks for the support everyone, I talked to cotter and he said he was afraid that the word coonhunter in our association name would affend the black students and parents in the audience and the emcee for the evening also. I hate that someone in that position is that narrow minded what makes it even worse is he told me that he used to hunt coonhounds with his father and enjoyed all the time that they spent hunting and bonding, what a fool.

Speaking of embarrassed, it makes me ashamed to read some of these posts...so far you folks have called this guy a moron, uneducated, stupid idiot, A-hole, dumbass, cretin, snot nosed rich dude, and stated you should get rid of his ass....and to write scathing letters!

Hopefully Jim you listen to someone like Jon Lock who seems to have the only reasonable approach.....no wonder coonhunters have some of the reputations they do based on this garbage that was written here. Nuff said, now do the right thing and try to change this mans point of view in a positive way, if that doesn't work then use the papers and media to express your side in an educated positive way.

happen to know Mr. Cotter... he is a very experienced-longtime-respected administrator... do not agree with his decision, but do understand his quandry and how he may have felt he was between the rock and the proverbial hard place... the problem with political correcteness, when politically correct for one group may in fact disinfranchise another... sometimes we just have to do what we believe to be the right thing and accept the consequences of our actions, face up and accept responsibility...

it is a shame that things have come to this end. i still find it hard to believe that someone would still have that outdated meaning for the word coon stuck in their head.
but i can say that i have run into this before. at one time we were communicating with a gentleman from scottland. we were talking of coonhunting and our hounds. he took real offense to it and said he was going to refuse to speak to us. we were dumbfounded. he was going on and on and finally i blurted out; what are you? a member of save the raccoon club or what? come to find out he had no idea what a raccoon was. they have none in europe. so we gave him some websites and info. after finding out what we were talking about he understood.
i hope you can resolve this situation and mayhaps educate some people there. it just seems that we hurt too many trying too hard to be correct.
btw i think it is great that your club donates money for scholarships and such for the youth.

agree with you, but school administrators have multiple reponsibilities that are often not harmonious... also an employee of a district-board and often must do their bidding even if not in agreement... I would have not made the choice Butch did, but understand the role strain that occurs in school administration, not in support of his choice, but understand how-why it occurs..

The problem with political correctness in its current form is that it greatly restricts peoples freedom of speech. As we all(I hope) know, freedom of speech is the first amendment to the Constitution of The United States of America. When we restrict free speech, that speech goes underground, and it is much harded to find the bigots, racists, and all around nut jobs.

I was recently discussing the Westboro Baptist Church with some friends. The Westboro Baptist Church is the group that is going around the country protesting at soldiers funerals. They are saying that the soldiers deaths are because America supports and allows homosexuals. Many states are rushing to make laws that restrict where and when these people can protest. As much as I truly hate these people, I think that restricting their freedom of spech is wrong.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Get these people out where we can see them. Don't force them into the shadows. A healthy first amendment gives you Fred Phelps. No first amendment gives you Adolph Hitler.

As far as the original topic goes, when writing letters, write your letters to the superintendant. DOC is right. School administrators often don't like doing what they do, but they have to follow district policy or they are out of a job. As much as that may bother us, how many of you would walk away from your job, your insurance, your family's security, if your boss told you to do something that, while not illegal, you didn't agree with.

If the superintendant tells you to pack sand, then go to the papers and tell them about it. Then wait until the next election and get involved with the school board.

And by all means, use your spell check and grammar check.
