When did the words Coon Hunter become Racist?

Shared this news article on my Facebook page. Thought you that do not have Facebook deserved to read it.

Mansfield, Ill. (WCIA) —

Amazon delivery drivers visit a lot of homes, but one driver is concerned after finding something offensive while dropping off a package in Piatt County.

Jordan Lee found a stone with a racial slur on it and he has a message for the people who own it.

“I don’t want to hurry up and run to get off their property for one, but I do want to, but I don’t want to run and look suspicious,” Lee said.

Those are thoughts that ran through Jordan Lee’s head when he delivered an Amazon package to a Mansfield home and found this stone with a racial slur.

“No matter what, they should be culturally sensitive enough to know that if they are raccoon hunting, put raccoon,” Lee said.

He says he was scared for his wife and son, who were making deliveries with him and in the car. He was even more on edge because the car is not marked as an Amazon vehicle.

“My stomach immediately dropped. It was like a feeling of disgust for one. Wondering if that was what I was actually reading, and also the same time fearful,” Lee said.

He wants the public to know that even if the homeowners did not mean it in that way. People need to understand how offensive their words can be.

“You should know not to have that on your property. I mean its your freedom of speech, but if you want people of all different backgrounds to feel comfortable delivering to you and not feel fearful, you should remove that,” Lee said.

Village of Mansfield board members are not taking this lightly.

“We need to figure out who it is so that we can go speak to the homeowner and figure out what’s going on, because by all means Mansfield does not condone anything racially or anything of that nature,” Board member Lucas Gilbert said.

They say when they get the address of the homeowner, they plan to speak to them.

“It’s not okay and ask them to remove the rock from their yard,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert says he already spoken to the sheriff about it and it’s a sticky situation.

“There’s really not a whole lot legally we can do with it being on private property and free speech,” Gilbert said.

Lee told his Amazon branch manager. The manager sent a report on to a higher up position at Amazon. Lee is waiting to hear back if the household will be banned for future deliveries.

If you are a delivery driver here are some safety tips:
Be aware of your surroundings. You can have a camera on your car or clothes. Have 9-1-1 easily accessible on your phone.

Story

In some places coon was a slur used for people of color and also I heard it used when hunting slaves down a long time ago I grew up in Maryland.

Another example of this generation of snowflakes looking for any excuse to be offended. I suppose we should quit eating “crackers” because someone in Florida will be upset.

Oh my goodness, a black guy is out riding around in his car with no markings or uniform putting packages on people's porches and he is afraid of a rock?

I wonder why rednecks everywhere aren't offended by the word redneck?

My son just lost a good paying job because of a perceived racial slur. He was the only white man on a black baseball team for 5 seasons and he was fired for being a racist.

Welcome to (the new) America. You only have to “offend” one person to be condemned. I wonder if Amazon reported themselves to themselves, for selling “Coon hunting” equipment on their site??

So easily triggered! I guess that he doesn't realize that "coon hunting" is a part of many blacks heritage and a sport people of vast backgrounds and races still enjoy today.

St Jude's Coon Hunt
I found this article. Is it true, if so crazy?

St. Jude cited racial concerns in asking Decatur County to change the name of its annual hunt. (WSMV)
St. Jude cited racial concerns in asking Decatur County to change the name of its annual hunt. (WSMV)

DECATURVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
For the past 40 years, Decatur County has hosted a hunting event to raise money for the patients at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. So far, it has raised $4.5 million.

Decatur County Mayor Mike Creasy said the hospital is now threatening to turn down the donations unless the county changes the name of the event.

For decades, the event has been known as the Decatur County World’s Largest Coon Hunt.

The Coon Hunt Board told Channel 4 that St. Jude has threatened to disassociate with the event and not accept donations unless Decatur County changes the name to raccoon hunt, citing racial concerns.

“Very disappointed,” Creasy said. “It diminishes our desire to even think of moving forward with St. Jude.”

Creasy and the board agreed to change the event’s name, but St. Jude again asked the county to change the name to raccoon festival, citing animal rights concerns.

“It’s not a festival and it will never be a festival,” Creasy said. “It’s a raccoon hunt and it’s what it’s going to remain.”

St. Jude officials told Channel 4 they never refused donations from the event or the event organizers.

A St. Jude spokesperson issued the following statement:

“It is our standard practice to accept donations from a variety of events and people of all walks of life, professions and backgrounds who desire to help support our mission and we will continue to do so. The event committee voted 100 percent to change the name and we support their decision and appreciate the continued desire of the community to help in our work in finding cures and saving children.

“We didn’t do this for the board of directors. We didn’t do it for anyone that’s arguing their point. It’s for the kids, and that’s the reason we wanted to continue our relationship with St. Jude,” Creasy said.

The mayor said the city plans to change all of its signs to now say raccoon. However, the group behind the event is a registered LLC. With six weeks to go before the event, Creasy said they don’t have time to legally change the name.

It is true Bob. I have been the MOH at the event for 4 of the last six years, with last year being canceled. It was talked of back in 2018 and I thought a resolution was made in 2019. Those folks surrounding the hunt are in it for only one thing, and that is to help the kids in need. When we say kids now, we need to be careful to not offend someone there. Humans have children. Goats have kids. The world is a messed up place and getting worse everyday with the current mess in Washington DC. If the bunch that complain about names would just come to Parsons TN and look around at the sincere concern these people have for the children of all colors, maybe they to would leave there with tears in their eyes. You can feel their love for that hospital and what it has done and will continue to do for our children in the future. I have been blessed to be able to contribute my small part to this hunt, and I am truly thankful for the friends I have made there and the life long commitments they have made to help rid the world of a dreaded childhood disease. Anyone who has ever been there comes away feeling better knowing they helped. In Fact, most of the winners return the cash portion of the prizes as donations. MY HAT IS OFF TO THEM ALL, and to those who come to hunt. A big Thank you from the Johnson's.

Coon hunting

To call coon hunting a racist statement is a slap in the face of everyone that coon hunts, including ALL of the wonderful black coon hunters we have in our great sport. I do not condone racism on anyones part, but this is absolutely an insult. Everyone and I mean everyone knows exactly what one means by saying coon hunting, absolutely no need to say raccoon hunting hunting. It takes a FOOL to distort the coon hunting phase into anything other than just coon hunting. I am proud of the fact that I have coon hunted with several fine gentlemen who are black and loved coon hunting just as much as I do. Anyone who is offended by coon hunting being racist is a self absorbed piece of work that needs a life. We should ALL be concerned with actual racism, but this is going way to far. Dave

Racism

I once, quite a few years ago, applied to DMV here in Virginia for personalized license plates. They would say "COONDOG". A few weeks later I got a letter in the mail denying my request because it had "Racial Overtones". Go figure!
