All You Deep and Alone Haters!

Hey guys I have a confession to make. Last night I went to a $30 $$ hunt with my loner and guess what?! I got beat! two dogs treed a coon about 600 from the truck and mine was in there at 1.3 to her lonesome. The kicker here is that I was treed according to my Garmin way before they were but in the hills it was virtually impossible to hear her with their dogs trailing around so guess what? I couldn't tree her lol You live and you die by it like I always say. I wasn't one bit mad about the way she performed and we got beat! Everything she did she did on her own and couldn't blame anyone else and that's why I want mine by herself 100% of the time!

Tyler, you might have just explained why many don't like deep and alone. The winner walked 600 yds to get his dog and the loser walked almost a mile and a half for his.

That I might have done. BUT if you turn a dog loose and are worried about walking to them or how far they get you should get a lab and duck hunt. If you coon hunt and are too lazy to walk wherever your dog gets treed you need a new hobby.

Tyler keep putting your britches on that 600 yrds will feel like 6 miles you should have tried the three hour hunts with no tracking system sometime get your buddies together and try that out lol.

Tyler for some of us older guys it's not too lazy, it's not able. Years have just caught up with us. But we love the sport so we don't quit and go duck hunting (too cold anyway) but hunt dogs that suit what we can do, better. I have nothing against deep and alone but a dog that hunts 800-900 or so and comes back suits me better. Wish I was young enough to hang with you young guys.

This topic is a six of one half dozen of another kind.... I want one to go a mile + if he needs to to tree a coon....but we encounter the most important two letter word ever....IF... if it can't tree the closest coon first not hunting much in my opinion if it can't get in the country and tree a coon when needed not hunting much, if it won't take running treeing squalling pressure once treed not hunting much, and last if its not pretty accurate not hunting much... IF is the key!!!! And no I'm not hunting much!!!!

I've been coon hunting for almost 60 years and I never turned a dog loose that I didn't wish he would tree one in the road ditch next to the truck.

In spots we have coons, in others we don't even have a squirrel. We were hunting some public land that is absolutely dogged to death and guns are usually carried year round. It wasn't one of my pretty pecan bottoms! If it were it would have been a whole different story! LOL

I will say this about this topic. I used to feel the same way Tyler does. I thought any dog that took a 2nd tree needed its a$$ kicked and sent on and most certainly not deserving of winning.

Then about 6 years ago I started hunting real track dogs. Ones that can leaves dogs in the dust and tree ahead on the majority of tracks and not care where the other dogs are. Combine track speed with accuracy and my friends you really have something that can put on a show.

Imagine Tyler's dog and 3 others just like it in a cast. Cast them loose they all scatter 4 directions for the simple fact of not wanting to be near another dog. You have a miserable cast and good luck really proving who has the better dog. These deep and lonely dogs in my opinion are poor track dogs so the owner/trainer has to make up for that by ensuring they will never have to actually compete on a track with another dog.

I will also add that these types of dogs can win and do win all over the country every night. But they are not capable of putting on a coon treeing show. They spend more time running from the competition then actually competing against it.

I realize this is all a matter of opinion and that's the joy of America! My female is the kind that if she isn't treed for 125 she isn't going to be there. That's natural and I cant change it but I like it. I've seen her tree 3 coons in an hour cast multiple times, but I've also see her tree the ONLY coon in the cast because of how she hunts. Normally she finds one on the outside somewhere.

I agree with what you said...a good hunting dog will get gone quickly but he will take the tracks as they come...but the tracks won’t be to cold...but a good all around nose...the good ones will put on a clinic...they can locate and have the game treed 3 or 4 times before they go a mile...

Save this post you made in a time capsule and reopen it 40 years from now and reread it and see if you've turned into a lazy man or one whose legs have gotten to the point they can't do what they once did. You might well be amazed at how much wiser you've become over those 40 yrs as well. Enjoy doing it while you can cause it isn't a matter of if but rather when. Those years will fly by!

One other thought on this is that 50 years ago (I was 20) you just couldn't hardly hunt a really wide going dog because we had no way of knowing where they were but our ears. I always hated hunting dogs when I wanted to be hunting coon. With the equipment we have today at least you know where they are.

To me that was the main reason dogs needed to be open so we could follow in the direction they went...no telemetry and for sure no Garmin back then...

I grew up on competition hunts and didn't want a dog coming in regardless. Off a tree was it. Well I got sick of dog hunting, no garmins back then. Jump ahead some odd 30 years and I have a lot different view of things. I still am blessed with great health and can walk miles with no issues at all. I generally use the collar to turn my dogs direction before it reaches a mile. I hunt smarter these days as I enjoy my hunting way to much to let it define how I have to hunt. I enjoy many different style of dogs as well so when I have to have a loner to compete I may have to just pleasure hunt. I would say the same thing if I had to have a dog that always packed I maybe would have to just pleasure hunt. I guess I would just hate to label myself as any single style of dog. Variety keeps things exciting.

And I'll add you get 2 or 3 dogs together like you described and your suprised how many tracks there are within a few hundred yards. Makes for a fun hunt

The deep and alone are usually 3 types;
1 man made
2 jealous
3 lazy,just don't want to compete

Most are afraid to admit it.

Deep/alone

Up here if they go 1/2 mile (unless open field) they have passed probably 5 coon tracks up. Last night my friend and I treed 4 coon and only walked 3/4 of a mile. All tracks were struck with in 100 to 200 yds from last tree. 2nd drop struck from truck and treed with in 100 yds. Next one 200 yds then of course they ran for 3/4 mile in water to river bottum. If that's the style dog u like then good for u, but when I pleasure hunt with friends I don't want to go 1 mile in two or three directions if that's the case might as well hunt by your self too. Then both or you can be Deep and alone LOL

That is the difference between up there and down here... Much of the time a dog is 800 yards before struck. If a dog is expecting a close coon track you may be out of luck. Near or far they better be willing to tree them wherever they are, and not come back unless asked to. No one hunts these little fence rows and 10-20 acre patches either. I think alot of this deep and alone gets lost in translation between those who have no concept of the true differences in hunting terrain. Deep and alone is much of the time necessity in order to tree real live raccoons.

I hunted against one of those deep and alone big winners last night. He fired out and went 900 yds straight through a big woods that we usually hunt 2 hrs in and make several trees. My dog treed 3 coons in this same woods a few weeks ago. After racing through the woods, he ran 400 yds up a road until he hit a coon crossing the road and treed it right on the side of the road. He was a mile and a half from where we cut him. He is a big winner and won the cast last night but is he a coondog?

I got one in July and August when it's 102 degrees at midnight and the coons ain't moving will gut you but she hunts every inch going there she don't pass none up.
