NE Indiana here n it’s been same here. Typical late December Indiana. We hunted from 9 till 4:30 last night trying to get my buddies 15 year nephew his first coon. Never even got an actual track until 2:30 . Finally put a 6 pounder up at 4am n this young man finally got his first coon. He was so pumped his hands was shaken. Think he might have just caught a bug😉. Tracks been like that all week. It’s like that every year. I’ll b better in a couple weeks when the ruts in full swing. Board r already swollen. Can’t wait. Good hunting

We hunted night before last in Mt Vernon ky treed 2 singled 1 double another tree with 3 and another tree with 1 coon and three coon sitting two trees away we were hunting in two parties in pretty close proximity they were moving good my other buddy’s were in Frankfort same night they saw 10 or 11 coon I think he said they treed 9 singles. We also made a couple slick, trees and a possum tree but possum was eating on dead coon my dog treed possum but I made argument it had coon scent all over it don’t think it helped me lol. But was first possum he had ever treed for me

Saturday night 5 trees with coon, Sunday 4 and tonight 6. A few den trees also. Tonight a couple good tracks to the tree. Mostly bad tracks that don't go very far, just a few barks and tree. Kansas hunting good since the moon isn't bright.

Hunting is good

Den trees, groundhog holes, drainage tile(when water is down) old buildings. At least one of these a nite. And some nites I don't see a coon the dogs tree.
Last nite 3 trees. One under old building. 2nd had 1 in SQ. nest and 1 lower in a fork. Took the lower one. 3rd tree a single. As I red lighted the outer edge of the woods 3 other sets of eyes. Dogs hunted close to them and never barked. Figured layups. If dogs don't tree I leave them and only take one out of a tree. Just my way. Want to have one to run tonite. What is your percentage of boar coon?? Guessing mine at 85%.
Love to listen to a good chase and hard treeing.
Randi

2 coon a den a pole barn and a nice possum

Question

What exactly is a den tree and why is it bad? Singles means one coon in a tree and doubles mean two right? Is more then one coon in a tree good or bad?
Thanks

Den tree is a hollow tree peterhunt, yes a double is two coon in a tree just like saying you treed a septenary would mean there were seven coon in the tree niether good or bad. Dens are unwanted bc of doubt. PS most only use a synonym for 1 thru 4. There's a boy out my way that claims he had sixteen coon up one tree and he just uses sixteen to tell the story

Den Trees are not bad. You just don't get to see the coon. Also dens are coon homes/apartments/high rises. What ever you want to call them. First bark smart coon go home where it is safe.

It's Janurary...here in Michigan.any time the temps reach mid 30° and no snow . HUNTING has been great...if the dogs tree1 or a dozen .... Just blessed with awesome weather to get out and hunt !

Ok thanks guys that makes sense, should you punish a dog if he trees a den tree? How do you stop him from doing it?

You should never punish a dog for treeing on a den because there is a high likelihood that there is a coon in it especially in the winter and spring months. It is disappointing not to see the coon but just move on to the next one. Cold nights, breeding coons and females having little ones are just a few examples that lead to den trees.

Your dog doesn’t know if it’s a den are not , I tree up more dens if I start hunting later in the night. Weather plays a huge part in it also. Real cold nights you tend to make more dens. It is part of coonhunting.

COON ARE MOVING GOOD. Good mixture of long and normal tracks. Windy nights high water and corn stubble my young dog caught 7 on the ground this season. Did not have the normal Dec lulle when coons stayed home. MAW
