Bear Encounter!

As of the last couple months there have been spottings of several black bear in NE,Oklahoma that just so happen to be in the spots I hunt pretty frequently. Several of the locals seem to be kind of on edge or scared about the thought of bears being around as its kind of a new thing around here. What kind of encounters do black bears normally have with humans? Obviously it's not a grizzly so not real concerned with it myself BUT when I'm out hunting should I be?

nothing to worry about. Unless you're a bird feeder. We have lots of them here. Rarely see them and if you do, they want to go the other way.

Now the wife's bird feeders have a different opinion after being drug around the back yard a few times.

Break your dog and you won't have a problem. Not uncommon here to see them coming out of the corn when the dogs are runnin coons around them. Can be a little sketchy til you're sure the dogs ain't messing with them.

Just remember you don't have to out run the bear you just gotta outrun Chey.

Outrunning Chey might be a problem... I think he still holds high school track, and running back records. He might be small but those tiny legs sure can scoot!

We never had any problems with bears until last year. One came after our dogs. They ran back to my husband and stood behind him. He said the bear came so close he could have hit it in the head with the barrel of the 22, if either one of them would have taken a step forward. After a few seconds, it turned around and walked away.

Yes, be careful, be prepared! Don't hunt alone if you can help it. I have treed several and it can get nerve racking to say the least. A sow with cubs can be deadly and while their not grizzlies,if they attack, they suggest fight back. Playing dead don't work , more than likely, you're dead with a black bear.

Chey

Just remember that you are the one that has to explain to your daughter why the bear ate Tyler. Lol. Dave

Check it out...

Go to you tube and type in BEAR HUNTING MAGAZINE, then click on Giant Oklahoma Black Bear. Clay Newcomb is great guy and a heck of a bear hunter. Watch some of the others too. There's one with a nasty sow w/cub that climbs his stand! Then another with a big color phase bear that walks right up to his ground blind and literally walks right into his arrow head. The last two I mention are NOT Oklahoma but fun to watch and Clay is a great Narrator!

Correction

It had been a a few months since I'd watched it but the nasty sow with cub IS the Oklahoma hunt. Hope she's not in the same woods you hunt!

Maybe you need to start taking that 6 yr old that you are teaching the rules to hunting with you. Black bears like young tasty meat better than old tough meat.

If I had one .22 bullet and a bear was attacking Chey and/or I id use it to shoot Chey in the knee...

Black bears are not grizzlys but, there are more black bears in more places than there are grizzlys. So there are more black bear attacks than from grizzlys. I would worry more about crackheads than a black bear. Unless the dogs have one cornered 99.9999% of the time there more afraid of you than you are of them. You have probally already been around then in the woods that you hunt and didn’t even know it. We have a ton of bear everywhere here and I’ve only gotten spooked 1 time while coon hunting. I was about 16 and was hunting in the mountains in nivember. I was waking up a forest service road with my light off going to a dog and came around a sharp bend in the road when I hear. Whooping noise followed by teeth popping I knew what it was as soon as it started. I stopped and eased my light on low and there he was about 7-8 yards still popping his teeth and whooping. So I started easing back slowly because he was still wanting to come my way. I started talking and easing back about 10 yards or so and he kept coming but finally he veered off the road and down in a hollar. Needless to say I burnt that light all the way to the tree and got my dog.

Richard Lambert I should never put you in charge of a youth cast. I would worry the whole time you would come back without the kids after sacrificing them the wild animals to save your own skin. Shame on you for suggesting it!

All you have to do is kill the bear before the bear kills you! You have had bigger obstacles to overcome, you do hunt redbones , don't you? Lol. Dave

Mr Dave, you are right. I will take a bear over a mean bull any night. Bulls are bigger and meaner. I always carry a big knife when hunting in case a bear attacks me. I can deal with one of them. I have several friends with Redbones that actually go out looking for bear. But I don't think that my knife would do me any good if a big mean bull attacked me.

Posted by Redneck Mafia on 11-08-2018 03:33 PM:

So Tyler it looks like your question has been answered. Don't hunt alone take someone slower than you hunting, a small child or an old guy. If you take the middle age fast guy with you have your one bullet but make sure you have your gun not his because we know how that goes. Take a knife as a back-up weapon and hope the Indian spirits of the bottoms are on your side so you will succeed in your quest.
I think I will look up herbs that repel bears and make a pouch for you to wear around your neck lol. I would hate for my daughter to lose her sweetheart in an attack. .
