Hide dog vs. competition dog

What's the difference between a good hide dog and a good competition dog ?

Posted by rooster731 on 10-27-2017 07:33 PM:

Some will say there is no difference. Depends alot on what you hunt against. I have a semi silent dog that trees coon all night. Some on here win with dogs like him. Around west tennessee and north mississippi most all dogs tree coons regularly in the hunts so those strike points get me nearly every time. If you simply want a hide dog hes good as any

Posted by yadkintar on 10-27-2017 07:45 PM:

A good competition dog will tree one coon and hide the rest of the hunt.

A good hide dog will tree several coons in the same period of time but get beat by a me too competition dog.

A hide dog

will show you a coon in almost every tree. lol

Prolly the most basic diff between the two is that a good comp dog is afraid to make mistakes and a good hide dog prolly don"t even know they made a mistake.

A good hide dog will make you wish you owned him when hides were $50 each instead of $0 now.

A good hide dog is silent on track, sneaks up on the coon with lots of brains, and almost catches a coon on the ground before it can get up a tree. Thus seeing that coon climb rather than trusting it's nose makes it much more accurate.

A good comp dog will strike as soon as it gets to a track, take it the right way on the first attempt, be lightening quick to locate on the wind while coming into the tree, and have the brains to use their good nose accurately. A good comp dog is (SUPPOSED) to be scratched when it fails to open on the ground before it starts barking treed on a continuous basis. But most handlers of these type dogs are much like the politicians in washington, they will stretch the definition of silent many different directions before admitting their dog is silent.

Which dog do you prefer?????

Slicks usually don't count against you in a competition hunt. Try to sell one to a fur buyer and see how that works.

Good comp dog doesnt go hide it goes an tracks/trees another an so on!

Getting beat by a me too dog now Thats the handlers fault !

No difference in the dog just the handler.. ones not afraid of putting money where ones mouth may or may not be! The other either doesnt know comp. hunting an doesnt care for it or simply is afraid to enter in the hunts!

Tree Em

IMO. The object to me will always be to tree as many real live coon in 2 hours ( or 1 hour $KC) as possible..... it's really simple. Weather hide hunting or trying to win a hunt I want my dogs getting treed under real coon.... and fast....
If you get beat on a scorecard hunt by a dog that trees one coon then hides the rest of the night it's time to start looking at the hound your turning loose.......... Jon

Hide dog

A good hide dog trees coon like a good squirrel dog, one after another and yes, they are good competition dogs as well. A competition dog may or may not be a good hide dog. Imo. Dave

Jon they might tree more coons than that dog but they are loosing their points due to mistakes give me +200 and I will win more cast than I loose these days.

Normally the only difference is the guy that owns him, but a good hide dog that cant win in competition and be called both. Has holes that would get him in trouble in a hunt but are over looked by a hide hunter. No different than a comp dog does stuff that a hide hunter will not put up with.
