-- Pet Meds On Line? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928482142)
Pet Meds On Line?
Little confused here. There are several places on line to buy prescription medications for your pets. I will use Bravacto as an example. You can purchase the chewable pill cheaper on line than you can at your vet. Thing is you have to take your dog to the vet and get a prescription. Say you have six dogs. You have to take six dogs to the vet to be looked at and then get a prescription for each one. By the time you do that, you sure haven't saved any more with on line medications that require a prescription.
Also your asking your vet to check six dogs but plan on spending your money on medications somewhere else. Isn't that kind of a slap in the face to the vet. I don't mind finding the cheapest medications, I just don't want to see the vet and tell him I need some of his services for a prescription but don't want to spend my money there.
Heck I already know they have fleas. It just seems a waste of time an money to take six dogs to the vet for him to confirm it, so I can go somewhere else and buy medicine.
Is this really what everyone that buys prescription medicines on line do?

Well Bruce, here is what I do. I skip the vet, the prescriptions, all that and just order everything from Canadian suppliers. CanadaVet is the one I have used lately. Heartgatd Plus, Bravecto, Simparica, all that stuff without a script and the low online pricing. The only downside is it usually takes 3 weeks to get it because of the extra time clearing customs. But I use it alot and save alot of money.

People accuse me of being color blind. The truth is I will hunt red ones, blue ones, black and white ones, yellow ones, black and tan ones, or even brindle ones; Just as long as they are English!
ONLINE MEDS
Bruce I use Pet Bucket.com. I use Bravecto also for fleas and ticks. I buy the biggest you can buy for the 88 to 128 pound dog and break it in half. It last 3 months and cost per hound per month to keep them Flea and Tick Free works out to 7 bucks a month per hound. No prescription needed, shipped to the house free and no taxes. Usually comes out of the UK and takes about 2 weeks to get it. Been doing this for 2 years and my hounds haven't had a Flea or Tick on them. Might have to call your Bank and loosen up the Security settings on your Debit or Credit Card for the Transaction to go through but other than that it's a Hassel Free way to get Great meds a Lot cheaper shipped right to your door.

OK, I am not pointing fingers nor am I trying to change peoples mind.
I am putting out some food for thought.
Everyone wants things cheaper. I understand that. Nothing wrong with that at all.
BUT is that on line store going to be there at 2am when your dog fell of a bluff?
Are they going to take care of that pup that's hung up in the birth canal?
Maybe I am one of the very lucky ones but my vet is a great guy and I call him a friend as well. He supports his family on his vet practice. I use him for everything and he is very reasonable with his pricing. He's not free but he's not big city expensive Xray everything and every test imaginable either. He hunts beagles.
Anyway I think it would be a slap in the face to him for me to do that to him, and it would take from his income and send my dollars out of state.
I try to shop local with other things too, I go to the local hardware store instead of Lowes, and the guy that owns the hardware store lets me coon hunt.
I go to the local feed store instead of Tractor Supply and the woman that owns the feed store lets me coon hunt.
That kind of relationship seems to work out for me, and if it costs me an extra dollar for a bag of feed or whatever I gladly pay it to keep the local businesses local. It's also nice to be able to go just down the road and get something and not have to go all the way into town
That's just my take on it

I have yet to figure out why some of these meds need a prescription for a dog, like heart worm prevention, when you can buy the same meds in a horse wormer without a prescription.

I agree 100% and is how I conduct local business, I support them. BUT when it comes to a vet, we don't have a good ole country type minded vet to use anymore. If I had someone like Dr Allen around here you can bet your bottom dollar he would get my business.
The vets around here force me to figure out how to make do for myself. They want to run 16 tests unrelated to what I have a dog in there for, and 3 weeks later if I need a simple refill on something as simple as an ear treatment cream, they again need to see the dog first. $230 per trip is about as cheap as I can get away with, and that's after refusing to let them test or give shots for 9 other things. I understand they have bills to pay, but so do I, and I've been around long enough to spot when I'm being milked for money because I'm a "pet owner" and they think I will pay it.

I have seen that with some vets, they run what I call a "fru fru dog" practice. I am very lucky that I have the vet that I do because I would avoid that kind of thing as well.

But . . . I have a wonderful relationship with my 2 vet practice. I have their home and cell phone numbers for emergencies. My husband hunts with one of them. They have come in for me on a Sunday afternoon to section a bitch in trouble. They have come to euthanize a geriatric dog after hours when it became clear she just couldn't wait to be released from her pain and confusion. They didn't send me to the cold and outrageously expensive emergency clinic who don't know and love our dogs as they do.
We have worked hard over the years to create our relationship as doctor and client, and yes, friends. We respect each other for the knowledge and experience each brings to the table. To me, that is worth way more than a few extra bucks for heartworm preventative.
