Best cold nose walker line?

Just curious, looking for some input and feedback...

What is the best cold nose walker line out there currently?

Historically speaking I would say Nance bred dogs. This is why you will see many big game hunters running dogs that go back to heavy Nance breeding.

Coon hound wise I have seen good cold nosed dogs out of several lines, but it isn't necessarily a consistent trait among those lines. There are still breeders who still select for good cold nosed drifting style track dogs, but they are getting fewer.

I hunt with a Wipeout dog that has a way above average nose.

And I know the difference between babbling and honest cold trailing.

This dog will babble a few barks if he's not hunted down, when you first cut him, but he will absolutely cold trail a coon and show him to you that other dogs won't open on.

Tim you hit the nail on the head. I was going to post about having the brains to go with the nose. Glad you did.

John Carrol I agree with the wipeout hounds but I am to close to them to do nothing but talk about them.

Ray,

I couldn't say how many are down south. I know there are many big game hunters here in Michigan that run dogs that go back to Nance and Bawlie breeding. There are also quite a few out west. Over the years I have sold several dogs that went north and west. The thing is recent events have lead me to believe my dogs have lost more nose than I thought.

cold nose

Absolutely there is several things that go along with a dog having a cold nose!! the ability to move the track /drift out and pick up/also the brain dept is a must/the ability to locate the rite tree/ and not just some tree because it lost the track!!and the ability to just find the game when there is no track made on ground!!jmo

The way I always said it cold nosed drifting style dog that runs to catch. Of course everyone who says intelligence is a must are correct.

Cold nose

I haven't seen a real cold nose dog in a long time but would love to have one. I have had plenty that can hardly find their feed pan tho. Lacking brains and nose but boy they can tree hard. The real test in my opinion is hunting them when temp is about 15 degrees.

Posted by John Carroll on 10-08-2016 12:18 AM:

I hunted with a Finley River Dan/Crowding Billy dog that had as much nose as a man would want.

And he wasn't all night making a bad track into a coon, either.

I hunt Blue dogs, and a dog that can get a bad track heated up and moving in a hurry is one thing I put a high priority on.

And it is hard to find in my chosen breed, harder than it used to be.

I daresay it is across the board in all breeds.

What some people call cold nose is just a poor track dog wallering around.

Western Nance bred, Morosak. If it has Hussy's Hunter in the Ped, it has been bred for big game.
