Young dog running track back and forth?

Young 12 month old female. Hunted about a dozen times. When hunted with older dog, no issues. Will run and tree. When hunted alone she runs a track good, but when track ends (don’t know if she is losing track or coon is treeing but she can’t locate the right tree) she locates around but won’t lock down treed. Then she turns around and runs the exact track back, barking the entire way. When she reaches where she started it, she turns back around and runs it back to where it ended again, barking the entire way. This goes on, back and forth, until I call her off of it. This has happened on about five different tracks, but not really hot tracks. A really hot track she will run and tree alone.
Opinions? Inexperience or not going to get any better? Just a lack of confidence in locking down treed, so rather than quitting and moving on she just keeps running track? Or is she just track minded right now and would rather track than tree? Anyone had any luck fixing this?

Just curious as to how this dog is bred?

I've had several that did that out of the same line that did that at that age. They all just up and quit after a month or 2 and never did it again.

Most pups go through this. Best bet is lack of confidence to tree. Try following her in and see where she's locating. Chances are she has the meat. Every pup I've ever started has went through the same thing. Find the coon. Tie her to the tree. Get her excited, then roll it out. Couple of times. She'll start to stay.

I've had a lot of young dogs do a lot of things, but this one is a new one for me. I figure she has it. She locates around but won't break over treed. After a few minutes she just turns around and runs it back. Ill try to get in to her when possible, but it's so thick its easier said than done. LOL

She will absolutely cone out of it. I've had several very nice hounds do exactly like she is at that age. Is the coon actually up or is she turning around when she makes a loss ?

I'm not sure. She runs the track. When it ends she bumps around like she wants to tree, but doesn't lock down. After a few minutes she runs the track back where she came from. I don't know if its the end of the track because the coon treed, or if she is making a lose. Honestly, it sounds like it is the end of the track because she isn't showing to be searching for it like she does during a lose. I just think she doesn't have the confidence to lock down. Rather than just quitting and going on, like most young dogs I've had, she just keeps running the track back and forth until I've had enough and call her off.

You say she's only been hunted a dozen times. i would keep her with another dog another til her confidence is better to avoid any of that becoming a habit but I'm thinking she will come out of it.

I'd jump on any chance ya had of gettin her on a red hott track alone too.

No need to panic.. She has only been hunted a dozen times, she's young and lacks confidence.

I have a young walker with none of those dogs in his pedigree...but, he did the same thing. The answer for him was to put some fur in his mouth. I hate to kill coons...they are spotty in this area so I didn't do it very often. It was as if this dog just loved to run a track. I went ahead and gave him a few when he did a good job then I would just wait and let him settle. Eventually he would tree it and have the coon. Took a few months of back and forth, but he got over it and he also became a better harder tree dog too. Good luck.

I've had a few different pups do this, they all been the type that loose their minds when they smell a coon.

In my experience, It usually gets better with age/experience, but it never truly totally goes away. Instead of the dog making big loops forward looking for the track after a loss they tend to go backward looking under their feet.

The one I had with this problem turned out to be a nice coon treer that was a pleasure to handle and hunt but at times it showed back up. But every dog is different and yours may end up nothing like our experiences.

Here's my opinion for what it's worth.Ive had several young dogs over the years that would back track like that.I tried to work past it but came to the harsh reality that they were poor track dogs. After I caught on to them backtracking I noticed it quick everytime they did it.I kept hunting them for several months later but there tracking abilitys never improved.I like a natural one way track dog.Goodluck with your pup.Id prolly put a couple more months in it and see what happens.

Are you hunting this pup on feeder buckets ? Buckets and throw in a couple of sow coons with litters this time of year can drive a young dog nutty , sometimes too many tracks for a young dog to sort out . JMO

If she was older then 12 months and hunted more then a dozen times I might tend to agree. But she hasn't.

I agree with this......
She is young, and lacks experience .......Hunt Her, Hunt Her, Hunt Her.
Good luck.

I had a pup that would do the exact same except would go feet up on the tree then work the track backwards a few times before going back and actually treeing, let her do this time and time again after a period of hard hunting she straightened out, still circles and works back a little before locating but by far the most accurate dog I have rarely misses just takes a little longer one solid meat dog

It will be ok. The good news is that the effort is there. The knowledge is currently not.

There are not that many "natural" one way track dogs out there despite what you read on this board. A dog has to go the wrong way a few times before they learn how to do it the right way.

Use your Garmin to mark where she locates. Walk into that area and start looking around for a coon. If she has located one and moved on, catch her, take her back to it and pet her up on it.

She prefers to run easy hot tracks and gets frustrated on the tougher ones that challenge her a little more. Build her confidence and she will do great.

In my opinion the worst thing would be to hunt her with a other dog if she's treed coon before. A young dog won't have the time to learn anything but follow an experienced dog. Second, the last thing I want is a young dog to pick up bad habits from another dog. Hunt her alone and poke coon out. There will be a night the light fully comes on and it stops. Just be ready to put in time!

I don't see where it says she has treed a coon alone Everybody does things dif but I'm all about keeping a young dogs confidence up esp one that's that young and been hunted a dozen times I'd keep her with another dog enough that what she's doin alone didn't become a habit while looking for every opportunity for her to get an easy tree alone. Even if I had to help her with the Garmin. I might even turn a couple loose for her after dark that she didn't see leaving.

I had a young gyp once that did the same exact thing I just kept taking her & one night it just clicked, she started treeing coons & ended up being a very accurate little hound.

I've got a litter mate to her I have singled out yet but I had a female off of the sire that did the same thing around 8 or 9 month old she is 14 month now and doing a real good job. I owned Linda for a long time Probaly the best dog I have ever owned. Keep putting her in the woods she will come out of it. From what I have seen out of thpurse pups they all have tracked b4 they started treeing good

Thanks for the info. I also own a littermate male to her which is the exact opposite. He is very tree minded. I guess I will see how they both turn out.

Hey Jeff, This is a little off the subject, but I was curious to see if you got your Garmin issue fixed. If so , what was wrong with it ?

On the subject: Good luck with getting the hounds lined out.
