My B&T will go out 400 yds and take a nap does that count? LOL

I have have one or two like that but some places they would be tough to hunt There just wouldnt be enough woods. Should they stay in the patch you cut them into?

-Thanks-

1 mile. By that I mean might go that far before striking a coon, but I hope they're hunting once unsnapped.

1 mile is what I considered deep as well but that was just my opinion.
I figure if they go too far to hear that dont do me much good.

On another note should they come back eventually or should you have to go get them I got a few of each here. Im just wondering what style is better in competitions or do both types hold there place in the lineup.

again Thanks to everyone willing to share some thoughts

I've noticed though, for the past few years and the 8-10 I've handled or had myself, those that consistently will go a mile, also usually go more and don't come back.

In a perfect situation that make a deep "loop" of some sort and catch a track without being beyond a mile to strike one. That's rare too, but I can name a few I've had that were very good at doing so. I think they pick that style up with age and experience.

Posted by jerhovt on 02-25-2016 07:41 PM:

Ive got two here that dont comeback 9 out of 10 times you gotta go get them.
I also like dogs that hunt terrain run creeks walls etc.. to get struck is that good or bad?
I got more questions than time
Thanks again

Oh yea, a good dog wth experience will key in on where coons like to hang out. Of course a coon can change their pattern just like deer depending on a food source. But catching a small creek to run is always a good idea.

But, what works really good in some places but not so much everywhere is a bunch of "bird doggin", left to right and right to left zags...that is unless they can do it super fast.

Until garmin came along, I only thought I knew how some dogs hunted, now we know exactly, it really taught me a ton.

One that doesn't come back- Goes until its gets treed or you can pick it up on the next road!!

I hunted Lil Zack in the Winter Classic one year. We turned loose along a creek in South Ga. I didn't see or hear from him for 2 hrs. This was before Garmins. My wife called me on my cell phone and said that she had gotten a call from a man in Florida who said that he had a dog on his front porch with my name and number on his collar. I got my truck and drove down to Florida and picked him up. It was a good thing that the guys house was there because he said that the creek went all of the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Richard, did you not get semen stored on Zack and Mongo!?

Posted by Southern Coondog on 02-26-2016 04:54 AM:

Grntch Adams Shotgun Red is what I consider a deep hunting dog. From unsnapping to where ever he trees. I hunt places I've been hunting for years and hes showed me places I've never been to. Seriously tho my opinion is no reverse find a track get treed with the MEAT, no matter if it's got to go to the bials of hell's kind a dog!!

Posted by Richard Lambert on 02-26-2016 02:36 PM:

I have always thought that if a breeder was doing his job that a dog's offspring would/should be better than the original dog. So, I never collected semen. I am still breeding Little Zack through Long Tall Sally's offspring. I am down to Wilma, her great granddaughter on the bottom and top now. Mongo's offspring were like him, comp winners but not coondogs.

3/4 of a mile at minimum

It needs to hunt from the moment dropped and take anything it can move on but if it doesn't go that far down here in a lot of places you are going to be walking your hound instead of walking to it. Most everything I have raised for the last 12 or so years I can here at 2 miles or more. Pulling them off a tree at 2 or 3 miles is not unusual if the coons just aren't moving but at the same time they will tree at 200 yds or closer if they run across one quick. Even dumping them on a coon that just ran across a road they will put right up too. As far as distance and winning hunts it depends on where ya are. A close like under 400 yd hunting hound can rack up a high score quick if the coons are piled on top if each other. Where as some deep hunters will skip past a pile of coon to get alone. In this case the only close hunting hound will probably win. However when in thin coon when that same close hunting hound is dropped into woods with thin coon so the only way it is going to hit a track is walking to the deep hunting hound then the deep hunter is likely going to win because it is actively seeking a track and tree where as the only close hunter never on it's on goes far enough to hit a track nevermind get treed.
Same thing for independence. Sometimes it helps sometimes it hurts. Just depends on the terrain and coon population.
The trick is to get a deep hunting hound that doesn't run past good traçks, just trying to get deeper. To have a hound that wants to be by itself but will back another hound if it hasn't got a track of it's own. If it does that and meets the time requirements for barking on track and tree. And stays at the tree you are well on your way to a hound that should win and win often. At that point it's all up to the handler and the cast you draw.

They need to get out of the pocket and tree coon by themselves to win consistently in the big hunts. It doesn't have to be a mile but on some nights like last night they may have to in order to find a coon. In the early round at PKC Redbone Days last night, Moonshine and Cherry were 1.5 miles treed with Cali 900 yards in another direction.

The worst part of this scenario is that in a UKC hunt you would blow most of your time getting to the dogs and wouldn't rack up a big score, but in $KC hunts you usually just need the CW. Many times it only takes one coon off by themselves for a CW and to advance. A dog that can get off to itself and consistently have the coon is a tough dog to beat.

I got one here I feel is Independent almost to a fault but he is darn good at being under coon by himself and he is young. Alone he hunts out slower and sometimes will come check in never stops hunting just runs by but no matter what If there is another dog even one he knows he wants to get out and be by himself and quick and you have to go get him he doesnt come back he is usually treed. Up here he can be out of hearing fast and he is loud.

I have a young female that doesnt hunt as deep but has a way better nose and can move a track she will back other dogs and has been by herself a time or two. She is very thorough and hunts as fast as she can move. Her voice is pretty but mediocre so her not hunting as deep is not such a bad thing I guess.

Thank You all

Deep hunter

1: They can't be following another dog to get gone, I don't call that hunting.
2: No reverse at all, it's my job to get within hearing of them and to have them broke to come when I call them. I haven't seen one yet that I can't make come when called.

Differences in deep hunting dogs. I have to carry a chain saw in my truck to clear trees laying over logging roads to get closer to my dogs. Does that mean I have deep hunting dogs ?

I was thinking the same opinions vary so much I was looking for a measuring stick. Sounds like you have woods there like I do here. It is easier retrieving dogs with a Garmin but I have woods here that go 14 miles acrossed to the next rd so even with a Garmin it can still be a pain. But I dont mind long nights

Another note i do not to use a shocker I dont care for them much
I myself will never again shock a hound to come back while hunting. I tried it on one dog and she hasnt left my feet for 5 years she hunted real good prior to being shocked now she wont get out of site. Another thing I was raised to never call a dog of a tree my father always said if the dog got there for you you can go there to get him to this day Ill swim If I got to to get to a tree to handle the dogs I will never call a dog off a tree I know others have done it with no bad effect but I feel like I owe it to the dog to make it where they did.
