I always wanted to go to one of those. Nobody has them in Michigan that I know of? So what percentage of guys are just shooting stock guns / chokes and what percentage shoot custom stuff? Are there different classes for each? How do you score or determine a winner? I'm assuming everyone shoots the same ammo provided by the club?

WE USED TO HOLD THEM AT OUR CLUB HERE IN MARYLAND YEARS AGO. WE LEFT OURS OPEN TO ANY SHOTGUN, SLEEVED, BACK BORED, SCOPES, STOCK ETC. WE STRETCHED OUR SHOOT TO 40 YARDS FOR 12 GA 2 3/4, 7 1/2 SHOT OR 6 SHOT. THE OLD GUYS SAID THAT 40 YDS KEPT THE STOCK GUNS IN IT. I MUST SAY ALOT OF STOCK GUNS WON. WE HAD 4" SQUARES FOR TARGETS THAT THE SHOT WAS COUNTED. WE ALSO HAD A CLOSET TO CENTER PRIZE ON EACH MATCH. ALWAYS HAD A GOOD TIME. SOME ROD N GUN CLUBS STILL HOLD EM HERE. WE HAD A RULE THAT ONCE ONE GUN WON TWO MATCHES IT WAS RETIRED FOR THE DAY. MOST GUYS WOULD BRING 3 TO 4 GUNS ANYHOW, UNLESS YOU HAD AN 870 REMINGTON THEN THEY BROUGHT SEVERAL DIFFERENT BARRELS. MOST GUYS NEW THERE GUNS WELL. HOW MANY SHOTS TILL IT NEEDED CLEANED. WHICH GUN SHOT WAST TYPE SHELL THE BEST.

WE HAD GOOD PRIZES, TURKEYS, HAMS, BACON SLABS, BUSHEL CRABS, HALF BEEF, CASE BEER, MONEY MATCHES.

ALL SHELLS WERE FEDERAL AND SUPPLIED BY CLUB. KITCHEN WAS OPEN 50 / 50 RAFFLES, SWAP SALE IN PARKING LOT. TV ON WITH FOOTBALL ON. KIDS PLAYING FOOTBALL IN CLUB YARD. JUST AN ALL AROUND GOOD TIME.

MY OLD GUN HAS NOT BEEN SHOT IN SOMETIME. MODEL 10 REMINGTON PUMB THAT WAS BACK BORED.

NOW I HAVE FEVER AGAIN, MIGHT LOOK ONE UP AND ATTEND FOR FUN.

We use a 680 brass plug to check the barrels, if it fits you can shoot it. The closet to the X wins, both sleeve and factory shoot in the same match.

We used a 20 GA. shotgun shell to check all 12 GA.'s at the muzzle on stock guns. As they said about OJ, if the shell doesn't fit, the gun has to quit. Used Wagner 2-2-10's at 35 yards. Stock gun class and an Outlaw Mod. class. It really fun if a shoot is ran fair.

It's odd that this event never took hold up here in the north. You suppose that's cause we can hit our targets flying? lol

DOUBT IT.!!!! LOL

WE HAVE TRAP MATCHES AND CLUBS. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE GOTTEN BIGGER HERE THE LAST FEW.

HERE ALOT OF SPORTSMANS CLUBS HAD THEM. PROBABLY ANY EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER AND DRINK A COLD ONE AND SHOOT. I BELIEVE MOST CLUBS NOW ONLY ALLOW BEER AFTER GUNS ARE PUT AWAY.

Todd, the Cass County Conservation Club in Union on US 12 has held the biggest ones in our area for years. I'm sure they still hold them. Our club at Wyatt has held them through the winter months for years now. I believe it is second Sunday of the month. No classes, everyone shoots together. The shoots in Union are big money.

Most stock guns can't hang with Outlaw Mods. on average. Stock guns were built to use hunting, Outlaw Mods. were built just for shotgun matches. Like comparing apples to oranges. I've shot in shotgun matches for 40 years. There's always one in every bunch that will try to sneak a fixed (modified) stock looking gun into a stock match.

Where are you from WVBLUEBOY ? I used to go to different matches when I lived WVa .

Mr. West,
I'm from the most southern county in WV. Right at the WV./VA. line. Used to have shotgun matches all over the county and went to bunches of matches in many other counties like Wyoming, Mingo, Mercer. I liked the meat shoots the best but money wasn't bad either. Been to a lot of good, fair matches and some not so fair or good. Hard to find a good old country shooting match now anywhere. Seen a lot of good shotguns and met some really good people doing it.

rmcmillan, stock guns I used and still have that shot the Wagner 2-2-10 match ammo good are Win. model 1912/12, Win. model 1200, Rem. model 31, Rem. model 870 (early ones), and a Rem. model 1100 (again early ones). You just have to try a shotgun to see if it likes the Wagner 2-2-10's. Not all of them do. But if they do they are worth their weight in silver at a stock class match.

You know, you can't even find slabs of bacon to buy in stores now like you used to win at the meat shoots back then. It was really good.

I use a Remington model 10 and a Winchester model 12. I have plans for model 10 gettting some work done on the barrel.

jtd, is your Win. model 12 a stock shotgun? Nickle Steel or Winchester Proof 30 inch barrel? Winchester did lots of R & D on their chokes for their shotguns. I never could find a Rem. model 10 that would shoot that fine #10 shot we used at the matches, but I have seen some Rem. model 11's that would.

Posted by skeets on 02-09-2016 09:51 AM:

rem.model 11 was a good of a 10 shot gun as i seen, but most of them are about wore out the ones ive seen.the model 37 winchester were good for 9 shot and even better if its sleeved. one of the main things to get a shotgun to hold a tight pattern is why temp.it shoots the best.i had some i would hold close to a hearter before i shot and others seem to to better if the barrel is cool.

Posted by Todd K / UKC on 02-09-2016 01:55 PM:

Seems like you all would want to use larger shot than 10's or 9's so you would have less counting to do? It's got to be hard to count the number of 10 shot holes in a card.

Mr. Todd,
With #10 shot you have more chance of hitting the X dead center and more shot in the small circle than with larger shot, depending on what you are shooting for (X or most shot in the circle). At longer distances there's not a lot of counting or measuring. Closer ranged shoots usually have a very small red dot they call a chigger that you have to shoot out completely. Most matches I shot at issued the ammo by who ever was putting the match on. The #10's we shot did not have shot cups in them so you have a lot of flyer pellets.

Yes Sir, those Win. model 37's would shoot #9's & #10's good. Winchester put the same good chokes in their barrels as they did the model 1912/12's. I've took some shotgun barrels and put them in the snow outside until it was my turn to shoot.

Seen one Win. model 37 that shot like a rifle if you put black shoe polish on the forcing cone before each shot.

WV Blueboy my model 12 is nickel made in 1926, not going to mess with it. Its in too good of shape and shoots good. I ve been told the model 12 is the best pump shotgun made.

Yes Sir, they're called the perfect repeater. Got a 32 inch bbl. model 12 made in 1927 that's a shooter, and a couple 30 inch bbl. model 12's that are Nickel Steel and Win. Proof Steel. Good shotguns. I like the stock guns better than the Outlaw Mods. personally. Don't blame you for leaving yours stock.

WVBLUEBOY,

I HAVE TWO MODEL 12 FEATHERWEIGHTS. MODEL 10, 29, 31 REMINGTON. NUMEROUS 870'S AND EXTRA BARRELS. MODEL 97 WINCHESTER. I ALSO HAVE A 1200 WIN THAT YOU MENTION. SHOT MY FIRST BUCK WITH IT AND SLUGS.

WE USED TO HAVE #9 SHOT MATCHES AND THEY WERE CLOSEST TO CENTER. THEY WERE WHAT YOU CALL OUTLAW MATCHES. THEY WERE 25 YARDS. MOST GUNS WERE NOT STOCK. MOST HAD SCOPES. I HAD A 31 REMINGTON WITH ONLY 3" OF STOCK BARREL. THE BARREL WAS 36" L HAD WAD STOPPERS INSIDE. WALLS OF BARREL WAS THICK. GUN WAS HEAVY. AT 25 YARDS WITH #9 SHOT IT LOOKED AS IF A SHOTGUN SLUG WENT THRU PAPER. MOST GUNS WERE SET UP THIS WAY. THEY HAD SOME HIGH DOLLAR MONEY SHOOTS FOR THESE GUNS. I GOT CLOSE BUT NEVER CLOSE ENOUGH TO WIN IT ALL. MISSED 10,000 DOLLARS ON ONE SHOT. I GOT MY 100.00 ENTRY FEE BACK AND OTHER GUY TOOK PRIZE.
