2015/2016 Wi Hide Season
I hope all of you have your rifles dialed in, and your knives sharpened. AS I do each year, here is another thread meant for posting pics and sharing stories. Good luck to all, and remember to take the youth with you. My fondest memories of growing up are when my Dad took me along. Now that I have my own children, I see how much of a chore it was to lug me along at times, but it is very much appreciated and worth it. As always, stay safe my fellow cooners.
Brandon

don't think I will bother dulling my knife on one unless I cut the tail off and take it back to the kennels to let the pups play with it.

Ya and save the shells. But like Brandon said take a kid hunting and be safe
I am looking forward to hitting the cornfields and timber as soon as I get home from work tonight. Now that a lot of our leaves are off, it will be easier to see the grease. I will be gunning for a huge black coon that I treed two weeks ago. If I get him I will post pics. Good luck to all and be safe. Joe

After going to taxidermy school, buying a tanner, and messing around with tanning hides, I may never sell another hide. So many projects I have on my mind right now. Currently working on one right now that all my hides this year will go towards.

Opening night Tramp made 2 trees in 3 hours. First one was a leafy Oak on a thick hillside, and 2nd was a coon. Saturday night, 2 young dogs slicked a couple times and I took them home and also dropped my son off and put him to bed. Went back out around 11 with Tramp and my friend's dog, and we looked at 3 dens, 1 hay baler, and 1 ground hole. The coon seemed like they knew where they needed to get to, and were gonna get there fast.
Last night there was no hard frost to contend with, but the wind was picking up. Speck made 2 trees, 1 coon, then a leafy oak in a thick ditch that we couldn't shine all that well. Took my son home again, and took out Tramp and Hank. They treed a leafy oak right away that was hard to shine, but I had my suspicions with how they rolled into it. Then Hank went off by himself with a double, and Tramp treed deeper up the river bottom on a big den.
Anyone else slamming them, or is everyone having similar results? I noticed no one has posted a pic of a tailgate full of hides yet.

Brandon I hear you on how it can be bringing the little ones out all the time. My dad didn't coon hunt when I was little but every time he went hunting or fishing I was with for as long as I can remember. Of course I don't remember being a pain but he sure does like to bring it up now since my boy is 8 now and is tagging along with me coon hunting!
I went out for a couple hours Friday night since we had a big horse trail ride early Saturday morning and I was being a wimp wanting some sleep! My mountain cur dog ended up treeing 2 and I shot one out. She got her ear bit a little bit by the coon on the ground and she showed me that she's got quite a bit of grit in her little body and she wouldn't let go until I grabbed the coon and told her "dead coon". I didn't go Saturday (figured I'd let her ear heal abit) but my boy and I went out for just a little bit last night but it was super windy up here and we didn't tree anything.
I sat on my porch for about 15 or 20 minutes Saturday morning about 2:30 and didn't hear any hounds barking. Usually on opening night it's nothing but barking pretty much till daylight by us. I think the pressure isn't going to be super high this year with the prices way down. I guess that's more for us then. Good luck!

Aub didn't go out opening night. Went for a couple hours and treed 7 on Saturday night. 5 on Sunday night. 2 tonight.....but we had 8 kids with us, so making 2 trees in these ridges with 8 kids was enough.

Sat
Made 3 drops Saturday night with my walker and my friend's plott. First drop had that hint of skunky in the air so we pulled out. Second drop was a big bust. 3rd drop paid off as we treed 3 nice coon and knocked all 3 out.
It was down into the 20's in terms of temp and that tight crisp frost really seemed to make the tracks tough on Sat night. Dogs had some really nice, loud corn races but once the coon would bail out of the corn into the tall field grass they had a tough time locating the tree. Made for an interesting yet frustrating night.

70 degrees here last night really made it tough. The leaves on the trees made it even tougher. Saw a couple in trees after I had already sent the dog on again. Hunting got better as the night went on and temps dropped. I called it a night around 230, but the hunting was just getting good. Last tree of the night I caught an eye after using my custom squaller in the top a leafy tree. It was about a 10 minute episode to get it to look again once I had my gun up. I shot it out and it was about 8 lbs. I felt kind of bad about that, I really hate shooting kits. I can't wait for some leaves to drop off.

I haven't been hunting too much this year so far. I need to change that. I went out last night and the coon smelled like it got sprayed by a skunk. That's a first for me.

LaValle Sportsmans Club is having our annual kids hunts Saturday. Glad to see some rain tonight and cooler temps for that. I'll let the kids knock some out and see how the hides are looking. Dogs are ready to get out again.

Really windy and rain was coming in but no work tomorrow I went out for a hunt. Treed one right away. 187 yrds. Rolled it out and recut back into the corn. He went a short distance and treed on a den. As I walked out the other end of the corn I threw my light back at the woodline. There were 6 sitting up within 50 yards of each other! Went to the other side of the road and he went down and was hunting the woods when the rain started. He hit a track and didn't take long and he was treed. Coon was way up and rain falling good. Took awhile to get him in the scope but I got him. Big old boar coon. Wet walk out but very happy with the turnout.
