Salem, Illinois

I heard that they are going to have some kind of a big hunt at Salem in 2 weeks. Will there be any Redbones there? Jared said that I should take Boone to it. What is the hunting like up there?

Coon should be in good shape or hiding after a World Hunt and Super Stakes in the area in the last month.

I'd recommend you get your dog vaccinated for kennel cough before going there and do it now so it has time to build up immunity. Use the intranasal or oral one. There were a number of dogs that got sick after SS.

Out of 81 cast tonight Mac and Boone drew each other. They drew a couple of really big pkc winners, Full throttle Jiggers and Stylish Woody two.
Good luck to them both, they will need it with that draw.

They say this is a dying sport but they have hunted 60 to 80 cast per night in cool damp weather.

Jiggers battled it out with two reds early then drew Cali late bet he's wondering where all the Reds come from lol

Boone got a coon by himself and then Mac got a coon by himself and was leading till the last few mins of hunt when jiggers scored on one at the end and took the lead. Mac fell treed across the field two mins after the hunt ran out and had one but it was too little too late. Mac has had 7 or 8 trees since I been here...all split and by himself but has not been able to come out on top yet. Every dog that's won my casts have been gold or platinum champions so we been drawing good dogs. We will try one more night and see if our luck changes. Good luck to the other redbones who are here.

What a reality check this past week was. The Redbones have come a long way but not nearly far enough. While Redbone breeders have made some great strides forward those walker dog guys have sure not been sitting back waiting on us to catch up. I got to hunt with some of the top dogs in the world this past week and it sure was eye opening.

They ONLY way to know how tough the competition is at that level is to go try it and see for yourself just like you did. We all hear the stories about how ol so and so can compete and win at any level and the sometimes the excuses of how they almost won but not many can call a spade a spade and just say I got beat. Does anybody really think they have a redbone coon tree'r in the same class as Wipeout Slim?

Richard I've been saying this for quite awhile. Until you go and see the caliber of dogs that are at that hunt you have no idea. I think my dogs are pretty fair but I'm not where I wanna be yet but getting closer all the time. I'm fortunate enough to hunt with trader and the Dempsy dog on a regular basis so I have a pretty good measuring stick to go by. And it's a lot of fun to handle either one of them in a hunt b

Well said Richard and Royce.....the breed has one that has proven she can compete at that level, and they do not like the chrome coloring. She is lead by Doc H - Layton and gang...and we better appreciate and embrace her for what she is, daggum special.

They have to be able to make their own breaks. Gather where the best dogs, the best judges and the best handlers in the world show up and we are just short on dog power. It is a pretty humbling experience most of the time.....but we are gaining ground.
