Brucellosis Tests??????

Don't want to offend anybody.....but how many cases of brucellosis are there on a normal basis??

I have never heard of one being positive.

$90.00 for a little blood work!

I totally absolutely understand why stud owners want these but does the stud do these on a regular basis?

all I know is I wouldn't ever breed someones female without the neg test , you run the risk of your male going sterile. I sure wouldn't want to be responsible for doing that to someones stud.

I have mine checked every year, also checked each time i ship semen, still a few cases in the south, it has almost been alimanated because of the required test.

People with a female that's getting bred should insist that the stud have one as well. If you have a female that has never been bred and take it to a stud that has been bred a lot you risk exposing for female.

That would be nice, but I'm sure stud dog owners won't except in house test,,maybe I'm wrong,,but if I were studding out a dog,,test would have to come from lab and vet,,I just spent $89.75 for the test this week

In house means the vet did the test there. It was good enough for Bone Collector stylish PJ and tree slamming Frankie

I wonder just what the "risk" is? Has anyone ever seen any figures on just how many cases there are each year? Or maybe how many dogs actually test positive for it each year?

I have wondered this myself. I understand getting the female tested, but how about the male stud? I know most will say having the females tested covers them but what about studs that are still being hunted? He could breed a house dog down the road and the owner never know it. What about him getting out of the pen and roaming the neighborhood for a day? Stray females in heat coming into the yard? The stud probably a bigger threat to the female then the female to them.

Im sure i will be corrected and that's good cause I like to learn more, but my understanding is that it is mostly picked up and spread by the female from butt sniffing an licking, the female passes it to the male when bred.

Doug Compton and me had a conversation about this recently and he has researched it quite a bit. He told me it could be spread butt sniffing, licking drinking or eating from same bowl etc. Bad news if any dog gets it I would get them off my place and try to sterilize everything I could

What did he find out about the numbers of cases? I myself have never heard of a dog that had it. Has anyone ever had a female that tested positive?

It's a precaution. Every time I give blood they ask me if I've ever had sex for money, ever had sex with a man, ever been to the Cameroon, where ever the hell that is. When The Pope gives blood he is asked the same questions.

You don't do that if you want to get some pups inexpensively. A side by side or fresh transfer is a much easier and therefore cheaper process than having semen shipped.

We just wrapped up a dual-sire AI yesterday. I haven't wanted to total the expenses so far, yet, but I'm sure it's very similar to what nitehunter2004 said he just spent.
Our female had a split heat so we ended up having to do 6 progesterone tests. Still, the tests and the AI itself were cheaper here than in Iowa.

I just had my bitch tested, even though she has never been bred, I called two different vets and they both were $95, I had no idea it would cost that much!
both said they have never seen a dog test positive with it,
said more horse breeders still get the test but very few dog breeders.

He didn't say. I don't think it's common at all but he did mention knowing about one that had it at the time of our conversation . If this female would have been bred to bone without test and he caught it with the number of females he's breeding I could see it spreading pretty fast. There is no cure for it .

The people paying $90 for a test I would check around more. I think the higher price is because they are drawing the blood sending it off to lab and waiting for results. Find one that does the lab work in house and it should be a lot cheaper.
If anyone happens to be going to bone there is one that does it in house and Doug told me a price I don't remember exactly but was in the 30 -40 dollar range like I've been paying. There are 3 near me in this price range and you get your results in a few minutes.

That's more than likely why mine was $89.75 then,,cause they did have to send it off,,and it took 2 days to find out results,,,I will keep that in mind next time,,thz

A lot of vet clinics won't have the in-house test because it has a shelf life. If they don't have a decent amount of breeder clientele, they end up throwing expired product away and losing money.
I had a brucellosis test done at Iowa State a few years ago and even they couldn't or wouldn't do same-day results.
