Too Far

How do you break a dog from hunting to far? I dont mind a dog hunt 500-600 yards but i have 2 that go 2 miles + its frustrating when you have a couple dogs that hunt 300 yards and then you have to load them up to chase down the other runners. They anit chasing deer, i dont even think they are hunting i think they just run down the road to run, Idk i had the shock collar on one of them and he paid no mind to it.

Hunt a road runner alone and control the dog from the box. Don't hunt a dog with another dog that teaches bad habits. Leash him up from the box and point him in the direction you want him to hunt. A dog like that needs to calm down and smell the wind, piss, etc., before he is unleashed. A dog that takes off running down the road is not hunting and has to be taught that road running won't be tolerated. Repetition till he gets it right and needs to be taught from the beginning. If a dog wheels around and crosses the road to strike a track because he winds it in the other direction is not a fault, but showing where the game is.

Are those close hunting dogs treeing coon before you load them up to chase down the long ranging dogs? Which pair of dogs are treeing coon? Dogs that hunt close can be just as guilty of pilfering as a road runner.

Who is the master, the owner or the dog? I don't allow a dog to stand up and put his feet on me because I think he is trying to dominate me, and other people think it means nothing and they pet them for it. Don't mean I am right just one of my quirks I have about dogs trying to rule over me. It's the same way I feel about a dog that goes 300 yds or runs a road 2 miles and not hunting. A dog will not control my hunt with pilfering.

I wouldn't hunt those 2 together

You're hunting too many hounds, haul two, not the two that disappear together. Single them up, turn them out one at a time, see how they operate single and adjust accordingly. If they aren't treeing coon as singles, adjust until they do, or find them a nice home in the country.

road runners

Just hunt separately until you get that pattern changed. If you can't stop them with collar, keep turning up intensity until it does. I've had dogs that would stop at 4 setting & another that had to use 8 to get his attention, but after that , the tone button is all it takes. Take care, Ron.

Sry but sounds dumb for shocking a dog for getting gone, truth hurts but thats the way they are bred theese days, deep and lonely, my advice if u dont want a dog to go would be to not turn it loose.

You first said they are hunting deep then you said they are running roads...which is it because they are very different things, and why didnt your buddy stay with the dog trackin while you chased down the other two?

that's why I have my dogs TONE BROKE most all the e-units have the tone function today . you don't have to shock a dog for getting too far ahead of the coon tracks they are obviously passing up . I wont tolerate a dog going to hunt a patch of woods on the other side of the county when I know there is a coon in the patch I turned them out in lol

So you want them to run the road i take it since you drive down it?

Most of the time the dogs will run the road and strike off the road and go into brush and work the track and tree, now I don't mind them being 500 yards from the truck or within honking distance but when they get 2 miles away I start gettin upset

Sounds pretty simple to me . Stay off the roads.I've never seen one with much go that wouldn't fly down a road if that's where you put them especially with another one that'll go .you're setting up the horse race then unhappy when it happens.

Yes or walk down the river. You may have already created a problem though. When you fire up your truck they may return to the road and horse race again.if they do this you can correct them for it and send down river again . I would try to take the vehicle out of the equation for a while. Sending them down a road is taking the path of least resistance and encouraging them to fly .

i do both kinds of hunting but mostly road hunt them. mine don't get more than 100 yrds ahead of me. my curs usually lead on the road and my plott and redtick lag back. when the curs strike the hounds take over. the plott espechilly will almost run off and leave the other dogs behind. they can't keep up with her. my dogs usually run fox and as far as i know they don't run deer.

It's true that many dogs wont go as far alone as they will with company, but if you have one going 2 miles {2 miles, really????} it wont take long for him to get gone alone. I don't know of, I seriously doubt, I have never seen anyone able to stop it. I have always called this the "disappearing dog" and I believe you will eventually reach the same conclusion as most of us when we get a dog that runs this big...time to quit wasting time chasing after a dog that just runs and find something else. Good luck, you're gonna need it. Your title denotes that you are almost at the point of agreeing.

Jeez I guess im really grateful then to be able to leave my jeep wherever I drop!
