Mine are 1 1/2 inch so the crap falls thru.Used a 2x4 block standing up to space.This gap is too much for a pup or young dog.

I have one Scott brand above ground and i want to say the gaps are around 3/4" maybe even close to 1 full inch. They are welded metal grates. All the dogs I have put in it stumbled a little at first but they get used to it.

Mine are 1/2 an inch,my nephew had one 1 1/2 inch gap and lost a good hound because gap was too wide,dogs foot went thru the gap in winter time sometime throughout the night on a deadly cold night,,foot got stuck and he froze to death before he went out next morning to feed and water him,,,since then mine are only 1/2 inch gap,,I'd rather clean kennel than lose dog,,and he wasn't a pup,he was a 6 year old walker

I have been using wood floors for 30 years, I put 1 1/2 inch between 1x2 oak and have never had a problem. I have 10 kennels set up this way and have built and sold them for lots of people that have seen them. No one has ever had a problem with a kennel built by me with that spacing. Anything less than that spacing and you will have piles of $hit all over the floor. If you are gonna use a spacing smaller than 1 1/2 inches, then you might as well do a solid floor, lol and there is no way I would do that.

Hate to hear about that hound dying but there had to be more to the story.Ive had every dog I own in these kinda kennels and they have never had a foot get stuck.Lately I've been using 2x4's instead of 2x2's.Seems to be easier on the dogs feet.Also use un-treated for the floor.Crap sticks to the treated.Jmo.Bobby how high off the ground are yours?Mine are 3ft.

Nothing else to the story,,he simply got his foot stuck and couldn't get it out,,I've had many of hounds in floors with a 1 1/2 inch gap myself with no problems,,,just wasn't taking any chances,so mine are now only 1/2 inch gap,,,that was sad when I found out his dog froze because he was a **** good dog,,seems like it always happens to the good one,,never to the chit eaters

Mr reynolds do u build yours for a single dog say like a 4x10 or do u have a big kennel built 10x40 thats floored? Id like to build some of these and get mine of concrete any recomendations?

All of the above ground kennels I have used were 4 foot wide by 8 foot long with a 4 foot by 4 foot dog house attached on the outside. They all have a tin roof and a swinging door on the dog house. The dog house lid is hinged so you can open the top. There is a side door and a door on the end opposite the house so you have full access. They are only like 3 foot tall in the living area and maybe 2 foot off the ground. I have had good luck with these kennels. It sounds like it is too small but the dogs seem to really like it. I run my dogs a lot, but even when I don't get to occasionally they still jump right in like they prefer to be there.
Mine are Scott brand but they stopped doing the metal grates and sides in galvanize. I need one more and intend to just make my own. The big trick is the floor...I am going to try wooden slats.

Only problem I had with wood kennel flooring was the wood holds the SMELL...

yeah they do hobo , but a little pine-sol , bleach and a scrub brush works wonders on mine .

msinc , I built my kennels just about identical to yours and they work great , I origionally built them to be whelping and hot pens but I keep a dog in them all the time for one reason or another . less the old whelping boxes I all ready had made I think I put about a hundred dollars each in the materials , that's with 1x6 flooring and I used 1x3 's instead of 2x4's for the frame work and I bought a roll of 3' 2x4 weld wire 50 ' which I have enough left to build several more .

It does, but they used to be galvanized and then they went to black powdercoat. I guess it is holding up but not sure if it will last as long as the galvanize. They do sell just the floor grates separate. Not really much you cant just buy local but them and the house door. Most places don't really need a door on the dog house. If I hang a piece of carpet on the dog houses of my other dogs to keep the wind out and warmth in they will immediately rip it right down. I found those scott kennels on google deer creek .....may be two different people it just brought deer creek up....I like their kennels I could easily build those but need that stainless floorin wonder if they would sell it only

I have the powder coated kennels from tsc on concrete I had galvanized poles with a plate welded on em so I could pick the kennel panels up off conc and put a bolt through that plate and the kennel to hold it and they look like new onoonoutside but the welds startin breakin loose they was rotting inside out.....

I looked at the kennels at Deer Creek...they are the same. Not sure where you are seeing that the grates are stainless. Also not sure what's up with the place...they still have a 2011 price list???? It appears they do sell everything separate...if they still exist.

I use 5 1/4 deck boards (treated) with 1 1/2" spacing. When I build another one I am thinking of using vinyl deck boards.

I too was going to use the vinyl deck boards but I intended to rip them to like one inch or so. Wouldn't leaving them 6 inches wide defeat most of the purpose of the above ground concept??? I mean, wont it just pile up on top of the wide boards instead of falling thru??? The Scott grates have 1 1/8th inch spacing and the metal grate piece itself is only like 3/8th of an inch, maybe 1/2 of an inch.
I thought the whole idea was to have the stuff fall thru so that:
A. The dog don't have to walk in it.
B. The smell is not right there with the dog.
C. Everything falls thru so it starts to dry out on the ground and loose some of the smell.
D. Its outside the kennel so it is easier to clean up.

That said, some dogs just wont be defeated...I had one that would go in his house. I guess he just wanted the pleasure of having it right there with him rather than fall thru the floor.

I build mine on a 8 x 11 plat form. The pen is 8x8 with a divider in the middle. That makes 2 4x8 runs on one platform. the other 3 foot is for a double doghouse with removable top. The platform sets 2 foor off the ground. The pen is built with goat panels. They are 4x4 inch squares. They are four foot tall with metal roof over the pen area. When I build the platform, I start at the front and the first two boards are 1x10s spaced 1 1/2 inch apart. I do this so when a dog jumps up into the pen he has something solid to land on. After the 1x10s, I put on 17 1x2 spaced 1 1/2 inch apart and then one more 1x10 so the dogs have something solid to step onto going in and out of the doghouses. The remainder 3 foot is decked solid 1x10 for the doghouse to set on. You can try whatever you like, I have tried it all, this is the only way I have ever found to make them almost totally self cleaning platforms. I can promiss you that deck boards or a smaller spacing leaves piles of crap to be cleaned up everyday.

When I say 1x10 and 1x2, that is exactly what they are, not the 3/4 stuff. I have a sawmill cut them to that size. Being 1 inch thick gives plenty of strength but yet lets it flex enough that when a dog walks around any crap on the plat form will fall through the 1 1/2 inch spacing. I have sold plenty of these and never had a complaint. I have made them on bigger platforms, but this size is easy to get onto a trailer and deliver to whomever is buying it.
