1200+ Points!! Is this possible!
Several years ago a buddy of mine entered his hound into Walker Days night hunt and his dog scored 650+ points. He wasn't even close to making the cut. The top cast saw 12 coons and the top dog scored in with more than 1200+ points....with another dog in the same cast scoring over 1000!!! Folks that's a coon every 10 mins!!
Obviously with two dogs scoring that high they had several spit trees.......so let's put this in perspective; Handle your dog, shine the tree, score the tree, walk to the second tree, shine the tree, score the tree, lead the dogs for 1 min, cut the dogs, strike the dogs, tree the dogs, walk to the first tree.......and repeat in 10 minutes or less consistently for 2 straight hours
I don't know about you guys but that makes me question the integrity of major UKC hunt events. I hunt mostly small, local UKC and PKC events and, in my experience, UKC is definitely the more organized, professional and respected organization. However major PKC events yield more believable top scores.
I have an awesome hound that I would love to see complete against major competition, but honestly I don't think its the dog that matters in those large hunts. What are your thoughts?
I don't comp hunt myself, but my brother does once in awhile,,and yes those scores can be had,,my brother has gotten scores like that afew times,,,and no he did not know anyone in the hunts that he placed those scores in,,,the coons are plentiful up here in the north, doesn't take long at all to get treed
The night that Dohoney's Lobo finished to Gr.Nt.Ch he scored 1225 on five coons. I spectated on the cast and saw four of the five coon. The last tree that night the other two handlers said there he is on the fifth tree and Mike Blackburn said that's good enough for me. Two of the three cast memebers saw the coon.
Untill you have hunted out west you will always question those type of scores. I suggest you make good friends with someone off of this board and go out and hunt with them sometime. It really is a different world than hunting here in the east.

I have done it once...almost in 30 years of hunting.
Going into the last drop at Flora in 1992 B&T days I had a few minutes to hunt the last drop by myself. I had 1025 and struck and treed. I didn't tree and let the time run out. Sugar Creek Joe had a coon. That would have put Joe's score at 1250. I still don't know why I didn't tree that dog. Part of me was thinking the the score I had was plenty... I got beat by 25.

Absolutely. I've watched a dog score 1175+ in a 1 hr. Akc hunt once.
I scored a 1,025 in the SC State hunt this year. It can be done.
The difference with PKC is when the dogs get split, you are cutting back loose and the dogs only score 25 when they strike back in. And 100 on the tree. You will are cutting back loose more by yourself more in PKC than in UKC at times. Plus UKC has a 125 on first tree vs 100 in PKC. That makes a big difference.

I am guessing but I don't think there will be 1200 points scored in Batesville next month

is in the east and they come in with scores over 1000 all the time.
It can sure be done, my best was 725 in a one hour hunt.
The ideal situation is a 2 dog cast in thick coon with one mee to dog, saves you from having to run the 5s.
When they start bringing in cards with 17 or 18 hundred i get a little skeptical Lol.

As a MOH I seen a score card with 2350+ points. The cast started as a 3 dog cast. One dog dropped out leaving 2 dogs in the cast, and one dog backed the other all night.
So yes a 1200+ score is possible.

What's funny is them dogs score that up there and come down here where I live and can't tree a coon.lol Diwn were I live a dog that can tree one coon a cast and hold points you have a winner. I've only been on three cast my hole life were I saw a better than 500 score. High scores don't impress me at all. I've hunted up north and understand how it happens. Heck nothing to hunting up there. I like to listen to a hound work and tree real wild coon.
I was on a 2 dog cast last year in June that scored 1575+. A lot may not believe it but it happened, all by honestly treeing coons. Dogs packed all nite and one was getting all the 1st & 1st

1200 is only 6 coon if you have first and first. That would actually be 1350+. Five coon first and first would be 1100+. That means a coon very twenty minutes in a two hour hunt. I would say that is very possible. I have had 1225+ no minus once and 1125+ no minus. That's my best two scores.

No Seth I like to watch dot cover about 4 miles of ground in a hour while those walkers slick and bust them deep and lonely with 2 lookin down. We went and hunted in a hunt in Illinois and hated it. To much action for what were use to. I guess what I am saying is down here its more what they don't do not what they do. Coondog is one anywhere I just hate getting put in coon. To much action for me. We may have broken a record with dot with cast wins with 125 plus. Lol
Don't care how they do it by thereself with 2 lookin down I'll take it every night.
Its very possible...
I've came in the 800-1000 point range in PA on a few hunts...
I went to Walker Days whatever year the monsoon took place...year before last?
It literally rained INCHES...I thought I was going to drown shinning trees..there was standing water..inches..in the fields and woods...it was also fairly cold..it was by far good coon hunting conditions...we scored a ridiculous amount of coon in our pup cast.. and seen a stupid amount while we walked..I've never seen so many coon...
You'd think to get a big score you want split trees but that ain't the case....you need the dogs treeing together....that's where you get your quick times....turn em loose...they all tree within a few minutes...no wait on tree times...go shine and find the coon real quick...call time out...
Hunting alone you gotta wait the 5...getting first and first every drop but that 5 minutes kills your time...even if you made 5 trees that's 25mins wasted waiting the 5 at each tree....that's enough time for another cast with 2 dogs to tree 5 more 5 minute coon! And 5-10min drops aren't uncommon...good conditions here in the fall and I spend more time driving spot to spot than hunting...
Its really hard to understand till you see it done...I too questioned it when I was seeing 400 or so points as a ball park average locally...seeing 1000-2000 point scores I just didn't understand how it was possible...

quote:I wouldn't consider our coon to be thick, but we have plenty. Ukc hunt this summer I had 1025 in the 1st 65 minutes and finished with 1575+ no minus. I believe it is the highest score to date at that club. This was all open woods, no cornfield coon. She doesn't do this all the time, but when all the conditions are right, it's a blast.

I have never been on a cast like that. I did draw a young man this year at the PKC World,he was my Guide he said fellows we are going to coons. I said good deal. I had 400 plus in the first 10 minutes, then the dogs split up and I finished with 650plus at the end. Yes it it possible to tree them coons like that.
