How many do y'all kill
Do y'all think you would be better off killing 10 squirrels 3 different days or killing all you can kill in one day just to get a big tailgate picture. Say 30 in one day.
I don't see much sense in killing 10 more than 2-3 times a year let alone 30. If you figure the dog you hunt needs em' it's time to switch dogs.

Big tail gates are pretty much a squirrel killing rather than a squirrel hunt. Now I'm as guilty as anybody, but usually it's just a matter of 3-4 or more squirrels in one tree etc. , and a bunch of shooters and several dogs in one hunt. Like I said I've been in my share and I have no objection to how many somebody takes in a hunt, but personally I believe too many big number hunts close togeather tend to make some dogs a little loose, and others want to get away from the "pack" and tree deeper than usual.

I would say the take depends on where you are hunting and the conditions.
As for making a dog loose if they are loose not much will change it. We have been hunting the plast 3 days and most of the time have been walking to split trees all day. If you have an independent dog it is going to get alone an get treed and stay there.
I am hunting over 450 miles from home and we have cleaned every squirrel. What wasn't given away to people here are packed away in coolers. Do I kill them like this regularly,no. Nor do I kill them like this where I hunt regularly but a few times a year when we get together with friends you can bet we lay them out.

I understand what youre saying Cope. when I said loose I don't mean leaving a tree too soon as much as a dog that starts hunting on it's own, split treeing just to get away from the other dogs, for whatever reason. You end up with the dogs trying to take over the hunt instead of hunting where you want to go. I would rather hunt one dog at a time than start going to 2-3 different split treed dogs. You just have 2-3 hunts going on at the same time, and everybody piles up the body count at the end of the day. That gets old quick to me.

I like to try and kill them all every time I go out . If we can pile them up , to me that's my fun . We also have 136+ days to hunt and 8 per day ... if I can , I'm planning on getting all my 1088 squirrels .
And if every time my dog treed a squirrel that I had to walk 700+ yards to that was as big as a house cat and I would have to tote it . That would be when I seriously re-think blasting more than 2 or 3 myself . This to me would let me out of this sport . ,,,,,, Maybe a shot of BO ? NAW!

It takes a lot of squirrels to make a pie...As far as training a young dog they will get every one it does a good job on..Older dogs may just get a good praising and move on.
Wonder if the guys that are local get as hacked off about y'all rapping the squirrels and coon as we do about the guys coming down here from Pa killing every deer, turkey, and bear they see just because its a couple of guys having a hunting sleep over?

Most of the places around home I could kill all I want. In fact most of the bird feeder crowd will shoot the squirrels that come to them and throw them away.

Spin it however you want.......
.......But in the end, so long as a fella stays within the bounds of the law and takes only a legal amount of squirrels during his hunts, that is simply his choice for reasons that are entirely his own.
Another fact: Yes, many squirrels are killed year in and year out for essentially one purpose........to make a nice tailgate photo and brag upon one's dogs. Is that wrong? Not in my book so long as the killed game is not wasted and either consumed by the hunter or given to those that are happy to have the meat.
In the end, we all gotta do what suits us, and my only hope is that folks here, there and everywhere do it within the bounds of the law. If the bag limits are too high, then take it up with the Dept. of Wildlife in your state. If you don't want or need to kill many squirrels, then be happy with your decision, but why throw off on others that kill what they tree within the applicable bag limits?
Mark.

There are days that we could kill twice the squirrels that we do...not uncommon for us to knock down 8 - 10 in a hour, to a hour and a half...all solo trees/squirrels...we have a decent squirrel population. But, we rairly kill more than 12 on a single hunt, for two primairy reasons 1) I want the squirrels to stay thick in the areas I hunt 2) My boys, and myself, don't want to clean anymore than that at one time...LOL.
But, that is just me and my boys hunting...if I go with a group of men, that are going to split up the game and put it to use...lay the hammer down...drop all you can...that just sounds like a great day in the woods to me.
But, I think about game conversation almost everytime I go to the woods...that's just me...I've hunted the same areas for years...one can tell when they are effecting the population in certain areas...some areas, I lay off of for a year, then go back...never wear the same places out....hunt multiple differnt places...all on National Forest and WMA's....1000's of acrs of woods.
I hunt with kids, or new comers, 90% of the time...so, we are going to be slinging some lead...that is why they like to go!
I'm all good with any hunter that is abiding by the game laws...to each his own.

I was at a MDW youth hunt 2 years ago and the game biologist gave a presentation that was very informative.
As far as wildlife conservation goes I learned something I never knew.
The average lifespan of a squirrel in the wild was 18 months and hunters accounted for a small percentage of the mortality although I still believe with enough hunting pressure on a small area will affect the population in a negative way but the mast crop and weather are the the most determining factors.
We usually take our limit if we can. My son in law who goes with me pretty regular loves to shoot them and eat them. We always clean and consume all we kill and I love to watch everyone shooting at them and having a good time.
When we have several guns on a hunt I will not carry a gun and just handle the dog and pull vines.
I love to spot the squirrel before they do and pull a vine and get him to running and stand back and watch.
Some of the most memorable times are when I do that and they blast away unloading their guns and the squirrel escapes. (LOL)

Done trying to understand your ways Mike. Do what you do-- keep hunting them dogs 6-8 at a time and shooting everything that moves- whatever works for you man. that 700 yd crack was definitely ignorant my man. They don't travel here you aint treeing many. You can't help yourself from bad mouthing other dogs neither. Them Bo dogs are TOUGH and will tree sq where they are- 50 yds or 500. The Yankee comments I just consider the source. And as a matter of fact I do tote a cricket on occasion.Dead game aint what makes a hunt important to me, dog work and being with friends does it for me. We shoot 100-125 sq a year, Gods plenty for us and some old folks around.
